Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to Hiring a Steam Cleaner
  1. 1. Try to interview at least three steam cleaning companies and get estimates. Find out which services are basic, such as carpet cleaning, and which are considered extras.

  2. 2. Steam cleaning your home starts with identifying what can be cleaned using steam, which isn’t just carpets. This may include tile and grout, windows, curtains, grills, glass showers and ovens.

  3. 3. Prepare areas to be steam cleaned by vacuuming to remove particles that could interfere with cleaning where necessary. Treat all stains prior to using any steam method.

  4. 4. When steam cleaning carpets, move as much furniture as possible and place foil beneath the legs of pieces that can't be moved. Open as many windows as possible to aid in the drying process.

  5. 5. Ask your pro to treat curtains carefully with the nozzle held 6 inches from the fabric and sprayed from top to bottom along the seam. Like carpets, you need to allow the fabric to air dry completely.

  6. 6. Your steam cleaner can also clean hard surfaces with steam. For example, ceramic tile can be cleaned with a steam cleaner that has a cloth attached to the steamer head.

  7. 7. In the kitchen, ask your professional to steam clean grime on the inside of oven doors, stove top and vent with special attachments.
