We were lucky to have Turtle Recall play at our wedding. Seriously - they made the day. We credit them with the biggest reason why the entire reception was fun & upbeat party from beginning to end. A few months later, our friends still reminisce with us about how they brought an awesome song selection & pumped a unique energy into all of their covers & medleys. They worked with us on learning & playing a number of special requests -- including all the first dances. Hire them. It'll be the best decision you make for your event.

I came upon doing vocal lessons with Sam from no background whatsoever in singing music. Although I was with Sam only for a year, my vocal growth and development under his tutelage has been remarkable. Sam is the perfect example of a great and attentive instructor with a true passion for what he does. He has excellent teaching methods and will really break down techniques in a way that is understandable to anyone. Sam worked with me very patiently and helped me to develop the level of vocal ability I have always wanted. I performed at our wedding for my wife and the crowd reaction was outstanding, way beyond the pity clap that I thought I might have gotten. People only stated how beautiful and amazing my voice was and some even asked who my instructor was! I have Sam to thank for all of this, he not only teaches you the right techniques but really invests the time to develop musicality in a fun and safe environment. Train with this guy if you have the opportunity to do so!

Had the trio version (sax, bass, guitar) of Sounds Good for our daughter's wedding - they played before the wedding, the processional and recessional, and at our cocktail hour. Great repertoire, easy to work with and very professional. Would highly recommend.

About

Swing Machine adds a touch of "sophisticated fun" to your event! While there are many small "big" bands, nothing can compare to the sound of an honest-to-goodness REAL "Big Band"! The band consists of 17 musicians, plus a vocalist! Swing Machine unites current/former members of the USAF Airmen of Note, the Army Blues, the Navy Commodores and other accomplished musicians into one fabulous, exciting big band! From our Grammy-nominated vocalist Juanita Williams to our percussionist Jeff Johnson from the Glenn Miller Orchestra to our lead tenor sax Pete BarenBregge who led the USAF Airmen of Note and in between, there isn't a "slacker" on the band! We have "top-notch" musicians, giving "top-notch" performances, every time! Band members have performed with well-known artists such as Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Barbara Streisand, Earth Wind and Fire, Gladys Knight, the Temptations, Carlos Santana, Johnny Mathis, Dizzy Gillespie, Chuck Mangione, Modern English, Ben Vereen, Frankie Avalon, The Platters, Maureen McGovern, 5th Dimension, Blues Traveler, Natalie Cole, Barry Manilow, Al Jeareau, Harry Connick, Jr., the Four Tops, the O-Jays and more! Our music library contains over 2,000 song titles. Each performance is customized to meet our clients needs. During band breaks, we will provide recorded music, so there will be no interruption in you entertainment. The set up area the band will require, is most times LESS than other "horn" bands! The area needed is about 16' deep, by 21' wide. Risers are not necessary, and is dependent upon what each particular client would like. Band Leader, Geoff Peterson, will be happy to emcee your event for you. He has over 25 years of experience as an on-air radio personality at several large Washington, DC radio stations such as WAVA, WPGC and WMZQ. Geoff has emceed for everything from birthday parties and wedding receptions to international events and Fourth of July celebrations on the Washington Monument grounds. Swing Machine performs at private, corporate and public events. Rate will vary upon day of the week, time and length of event and distance to be traveled. We love watching people enjoy our music - whether they're dancing, tapping a foot, or just smiling while listening! The question I am asked most often is, "Is the band really having as much fun as it looks like you are?" The simple answer is, YES! The band really just enjoys playing together, and we're a family! It's great to get together with other musicians on the same level and just play! When putting the band together, we didn't look at just the musical ability of each player, but how they interacted with other players. We have such a good camaraderie on the band, and such a desire to play our very best, the atmosphere and enjoyment it creates for all is amazing!

After seeing Damon perform at venues and events in the area, we were very excited to hire his band for our wedding. We had an outdoor wedding with about 180 guest of all ages. After an initial meeting to discuss the evening, the band showed up and proceeded to rock the house right down to the ground! With music from every generation, all of the guests had an evening that they will remember forever. Damon learned our "first dance" song, rocked out a hardcore "Hava Nagila" and other cultural dance songs and even played my father in laws favorite tunes. People still talk about our big day and Damon and his crew were a huge part of the success. If you want to have an event that has has people dancing to the wee hours, Damon Forman is the guys for you!

We hired the musical services of Peter and he presented an excellent band for our wedding reception. He was very helpful and played a wide variety of songs. The band had plenty of onstage energy and were really nice performers. Highly recommended! They will keep the dancefloor packed all night long!

Jack Philipoom came to my attention at my nieces wedding reception in Williamsburg , Virginia where he was performing jazz guitar with an ensemble. It was there that I booked him for a garden party at my McLean , Virginia home. The flow and style of this extremely talented musician added an elegant ambiance to our evening. His personality is delightful, and our guests found him to be simply charming. I will definitely rehire him, and have highly recommended him to our friends.

We weren't sure what to expect booking a band without having met them, but New Legacy Jazz Band was definitely worth it! They made our wedding so much more fun, with none of the typical wedding band cheesiness many come to expect. We were very impressed with the samples posted on their website, and even more so with the easy communication with our contact Alan. We could tell they had done this many times in the past - every time we sent a question (such as whether they could play music from a CD, or would be able to make announcements), he responded promptly and assured us that all of our needs were covered. The band was able to do everything we hoped for and more! We had 165 guests, and packed the dance floor even at 1 in the afternoon. We had been so worried about people not dancing that early, but the music was so good it was hard not to! In addition, Alan was friendly and personable at the mic making announcements and cuing the events of the afternoon, giving us exactly what we wanted despite the vague descriptions we had sent. We heard a LOT of compliments about the music from our guests, and are so glad we booked New Legacy for our wedding. We would recommend them in a heartbeat - the music was great, the energy was high, and they were so very easy to work with.

Simone is an excellent musician. She took the time to tweak her version of my song selection and suggest other songs to play at my wedding. The day of, she got a little lost in the park and was late, but thankfully, so was I since my limo driver didn't pick me up on time. She was apologetic, quickly regained her composure and played a perfect set on her accordion. The fact that she was late to my wedding and is still getting 4 stars should tell you how well she did. Everyone loved her! If your event venue is convoluted like mine was, I recommend giving her a map or chatting about exactly where your event is beforehand. I also recommend, without reservation, hiring her. Her music is worth any additional advance planning.

Jarrett was the music director for our wedding and we couldn't have made a better choice! Our ceremony was filled with songs from many different genres of music and Jarrett covered them all like the pro he is. Three years later our guests literally still talk about how amazing our wedding music was. Despite his incredible talent, Jarrett is down to earth and wonderful to work with and definitely someone you can trust. Ronald & Penny Greene

I can confidently say Escapade is the best wedding band I've ever seen. The quality of their musicianship and showmanship is outstanding. Not only are they excellent musicians but they are also wonderful people which makes working with them delightful especially durring chaotic parties. I've even found myself listening to songs they played that I hadn't heard before I saw them performed by Escapade. I can't recommend them strongly enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
