Hached was very professional. And though he did not complete any work I appreciated that he was honest in recommending that I replace my refrigerator instead of him repairing it, only for it to need to be repaired again. True integrity and it was appreciated.

Paisley Lammie of Right Choice was very professional and courteous. He showed up on time and made the repair very quickly. Once I explained the problem, he knew exactly what the cause was and how to fix it. He had to go quite a distance to get the part that was needed, but did so and came right back to make the repair. I do think the cost of $150.00 was a bit high for a $12.00 part and a less than twenty minute repair job, but frankly I don't have any comparisons so I don't know if this was the going rate, high, or low. He had to ask me what the problem was and the model number of my refrigerator, which I had given to Thumbtack, so I am wondering why Thumbtack didn't pass on that information--it may have helped in him giving me an estimate before he came to do the repair. However, overall, I am satisfied with the job.

Mr. Inchauspe did the things I asked him to do (secure stair treads, clean bird nest from vent, sand & paint electric meter base, replace window lock and repair leaking tub faucet) and even added in a couple of extra items (replaced outdoor electric outlet switch plate, secured unsteady curtain rod and attached 3 vent covers outside) that I requested the day of the service at no additional charge. His work was excellent and I was charged exactly the price he quoted plus the parts which he provided receipts for. I highly recommend him.

James was able to perform a same day repair of a broken kitchen faucet. Within 30 minutes of posting my request he had responded with a quote. After he arrived I mentioned that I had some electrical problems with a ceiling fan and he was able to address that also in a timely manner. Great service and professionalism. I would certainly recommend him to anyone who needs help.

We hired Brad and Lisa to find out if we could repair a leaking refrigerator or if we needed to buy a new one. They fixed that and then helped us replace a leaking toilet, too. They were prompt, honest, and reasonably priced. I think we will be saving hundreds of dollars on our water bill this year due to them. Highly recommended!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
