Cesar did a great job -- prompt, courteous, efficient, and professional. The project of mounting our flat-screen TV on the wall turned out to be a little more complicated than he had anticipated when the wall was wood paneling and not drywall, but he had the right tools with him. My HDMI connector cables also proved to be too short for the new set-up, but Cesar had longer ones with him, for a modest additional charge. Highly recommended!

I hired Herbert and his assistant to help me convert my van into a camper. The first project involved putting in a wood floor (over insulation) and building a bed frame. I could not be any more delighted with the result! Herbert was extremely flexible in scheduling around my weekends. After weather washed us out X2, he gave up a Sunday to help me with my van. Herbert kept in contact with me via text and email as we sorted out the final details. He picked up the needed supplies, arrived promptly, and did a fantastic job with the floor and bed. This was not an easy task as a van floor/walls have many challenges to work with. The completed project is even better than I hoped for! Working with Herbert was a delight. He is professional, friendly, flexible and very kind. I look forward to hiring Herbert for several other van projects and projects for my condo.

My wife and I recently purchased a home built in 1930 with hard wood floors. The floors had obviously seen some wear and tear over the years. My wife contacted Mr. Sandless to re-finish our floors prior to moving in and the results, WOW! The difference in the floors appearance is like night and day. Beautiful wood grain and color revealed. We are very pleased and would certainly recommend Hills Flooring / Mr.Sandless wood floor refinishing to any of our family and friends. Thank you for restoring our homes floors to their original beauty.

The job involved adding new wood to a 60 year old floor where walls had been removed and then sanding and refinishing the new wood and the old to create a seamless appearance. In addition, there were deep "pet" stains in two areas. The finished job was amazing. An untrained eye would never have distinguished between old and new and the stains were completely gone. Other floor contractors had told us that the stains would not go away completely. As for Crafted Hardwood Floors, LLC , they were a pleasure to deal with from the beginning. The estimator arrived on time as did the install crew. Their price was very fair and much better than 2 other. They replaced a contractor who was hired but then had not shown up after promising to appear on 3 different occasions. The no show threatened the move in date but we were fortunate to find Crafted Hardwood Floors. One of the best companies we have ever dealt with. /. Jay & Laura Schwartz

Jose ranks high for me and my husband. We're very happy with the wood floors and carpet he's installed thus far. Couldn't have asked for better results. Love his professionalism, genuineness and attention to detail. He's also very reasonable. We're looking forward to round two with him soon.

Nery did a great job power washing and staining my deck. He repaired holes in my drywall and it looked completely brand new, like nothing ever happened. He also repaired my gutter and some wood siding that had been damaged on the side of my house. I will definitely be contacting him again if we need more work done!

Matt pulled out the carpet in our basement and installed a wood grain tile. He did a great job with the installation and also communicating about the time frame for completing the job. He made see that the grout lines were as narrow as possible to achieve the full wood like unlike some contractors who take the lazy approach. We plan on hiring him again when we upgrade the tile in our bathroom.

I would highly recommend Ordonez Home Improvement for anything you need done around your home. I got quick, high-quality service at Avery affordable price. He installed a Roman Shadein my kitchen, which required installing a wood mount. He repainted and refinished a part of my bathroom that had water damage from condensation. And he patiently helped me move furniture and hang pictures.

We had our hardwood floors sanded and stained. We also had a problem with one of the areas on the floor being a little weak and he replaced the wood in that area for us. The floor looked great but there was something that needed to be touched up and he came back to ensure that the job was completed to our satisfaction.

We absolutely loved working with José and his team to tile our basement floor with ceramic wood-looking tile, expose a brick wall, and install new toilet and a wall-mounted sink. He works FAST and within budget. Extra things we needed done were added at very reasonable extra expense ($40-60 to repair an unexpected drywall hole behind a mirror). His team does beautiful work, and José made sure every bit of trash or demo material was taken away. They also went above and beyond to make things look nice. For example, I don't think they charged me extra when they plastered around our baseboards and it looks soooo much better! They also patched a little hole left by a past electrician's job. They took extra good care of our space as if it was their own home. We also like that he respected our desire to further finish our space ourselves ( we are ok with doing our own painting). I can't say enough good things. We will definitely hire José and Brandon Contracting for our next job.

Quick to respond to our requirements. Flexible in timing. The job was done quickly and very neat work as well. We hired them immediately for another project in the basement that involved wood paneling a wall. It involved making a design with two wood patterns (light and dark wood). We left the Creative design to them and the final design turned out good. Definitely hire them, if you are considering wall work.

I hired Dave to paint my end unit all wood townhouse. It had been a while since last painted and needed a lot of sanding and prep work. I found Dave to be very personable, very knowledgable and professional. The work was done in a timely manner with quality materials and workmanship. I have already received compliments from my neighbors and given out his name/number to same. I would hire Dave again and recommend his services to anyone.

Beautiful, handmade wood railings. Primed and painted. Also painted trim around front door. Re-grouted flagstone stairs and walkway and replaced four pieces of flagstone where four new handrail main posts were placed. Sealed all the flagstone. It looks fabulous. Friendly, skilled workers who did a great job. They cleaned up at the end of each day and all requests were met with "We'll take care of it." Highly recommended.

Remberto, came promptly to assess the proposed work, gave a fine estimate - which was competitive (and not the lowest of all estimates that we solicited). We hired him/his company to lay tile in our new sunroom, and paint the exterior of our large brick/wood siding house in Alexandria. He handled the job very professionally, he communicated well - explaining the details of work, recommended how to make the job even better. We provided the tile and the paint. The work itself was excellent, completed on time, along with another worker in his company. Both the painting job and the tiling job was well cleaned up when finished. And, we already have plans to hire him again for other house renovation project, as we were quite satisfied with the whole process of his work.

Yong and his crew were amazing. We replaced the cheap wood with large tile on the entire first level. The job included pulling up the wood which was glued down and installing the tile which had previously purchased. Yong responded to my request for an estimate on the same day came by to look at the job and provided an estimate well below others. The job actually became a lot more involved than expected but he kept to his original estimate and did a great job. We'd definitely use him again and recommend him for any of tile and backsplash needs!

Paul Langway and his team completed four jobs for us in three days- installing laminate kitchen tile, putting up a new shed door, removing and replacing rotting wood around a large window, and installing a ceiling light fixture. They were a very efficient team and paid close attention to detail, putting in long hours one day to finish the shed, even while it was dark out. The shed door especially looks amazing- better than the original, which was rotting at the bottom. Paul's flooring specialist is great. They took care of purchasing all of the materials and we refunded them at the end of the project. We felt completely comfortable having him and his team in and out of our home over the course of three days, and will be contacting him in the future for other projects.

Sam and his team did an excellent job of "revitalizing" our deck and privacy fence. We wanted both the deck and fence power-washed, several pieces of broken or split wood replaced, gouges filled in and sanded, and stain applied. They arrived to do the job when they said they would and finished in three days. (Would have been sooner, but weather was a factor.) Sam even suggested a stain color that my husband and I both love. (We couldn't agree on a color!) The price was reasonable, especially considering the amount of work and care put into the job. We feel like we have a brand new deck! We will likely use his services again soon and would highly recommend to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
