I am writing this review as I am extremely happy with the services Coach Lynn provided. After several sessions with her and professionally written resume I got two interviews out of only 3 jobs I have applied for and have already scheduled my final interview at the University of my choice! Coach Lynn didn't only give me a professional advice, but she motivated me to do my best when I felt discouraged! She is truly an amazing life coach! I can always text her for an advice or just an encouragement and she's always there for you! She is super friendly and sweet and has a calm positive aura that brings enormous positivity! What a finding! I knew it right away it would have been a successful companionship! She is outstanding!!!

Amenah has been an indispensable component of some of my best work throughout my bachelor and masters degrees. Even if the subject matter is obscure, she is able to quickly understand the point I was trying to get across and help me find the most strategic, well-organized pathway to get my point across to the reader. Importantly, she takes into consideration the audience you are writing for (whether academic, journalistic, grant agencies, etc.), helping you tailor the form and delivery of your writing. Amenah is not only a skilled grammatical editor. She is able to work with my style of writing, not against it, making me a better writer with each project she assists on. Her personable nature and common sense way of talking me through even the most complex subject matter helps me organize my thoughts and arguments, making any writing task seem far less daunting. I would HIGHLY recommend working with Amenah.

Mr. Day did a phenomenal work on my resume, I was completely lost since the last resume i wrote was over 20 years ago. He explained details on today's resume writing and gave me top notch advice on preparing for an interview. I received my new resume within a week and the resume has a distinctive professional appearance. I highly recommend Mr. Day to anyone who needs an excellent resume and cover letter.

I am writing in regards to my recent experience with Mr. Bruce Phillips. I requested his services to create a resume for a position for which I was applying. He not only wrote my resume, he also provided me with a lesson on business writing. He was patient, thorough, and quick to respond to my questions. I would highly recommend him to perform either the resume writing or the tutoring of any number of topics. He is well spoken and has the ability to teach in a way that is understandable.

I had a one on one session with Tom and it was fantastic. At first I thought I was pretty ok with my speech outline before I talked to him. It wasn't until we talked about the structure of my speech that I realized my speech lacked focus. Long story short, we completely restructured my speech together and Tom gave me extremely great insights on how to plan out my speech before I even begin writing it. This is knowledge something that I will take it to the heart and will never forget.

Ms. Belle has tutored my twins since September 2016. She is great with them and they love working with her. I have seen significant improvements in my kids' written ability in terms of clarity, volume, flow, and style. They are in the 5th Grade AAP Level IV program in FCPS and are now comfortable constructing multiple paragraphs to express their ideas or tell a story. My daughter is especially confident and excited in her writing since working with Ms. Belle. My son's ability to write about his passion for sports has soared. The effort is reflected in the last two report cards and in the grades that they receive on their language arts projects. I highly recommend Ms. Belle as a language arts tutor and we will continue to engage her services.

Excellent, high quality professional work, dedicated, the editor delivered an excellent quality deliverable under a very tight deadline. An investment I will never regret and will definitely use the services again. The editor is highly knowledgeable with insights that go beyond usual writing tasks. I am highly obliged for her expert suggestions which I have accepted all. I have already recommended her to my other friends and clients, and shared with them very professional experiences I have received while working Lauren on multiple projects. I will be working with her in near and long term future definitely. Highly recommended!

Working with Lori is a pleasure! Her extensive industry knowledge and thoughtful analysis of our organization's strategy have resulted in much improved marketing materials. Since I've started working with Lori, our direct mail channel has emerged as our most competitive cost per lead--beating other channels, like paid search 4x over. I highly recommend Lori for marketing strategy and copy writing needs.

My experience with Erin was very brief but, very helpful and enjoyable. My 4th grader needed help with his writing. she did a very thorough assessment of his ability and proceeded. It was summer and we had a lot of travel and were not consistent clients. We are currently looking to rehire and work with her this winter/spring.

Maureen helped me revamp my resume. After teaching for 20 years, it was time to enter the real world of jobs. Maureen took my experiences and translated them into appropriate terms for my new job quest. I appreciated the time Maureen took to get to know me, as she was able to tailor the resume to reflect who I am.

Dale was a great ACT tutor, especially when it came to teaching an international student the ins and outs of the Reading and Writing sections. Since we started working two weeks before the test date, Dale laid out a great strategy of drilling practice tests and helped us find our weak points to review. He had a great base of resources and experience to help us not only with tactics and test taking skills, but how we could apply these study techniques to a broad range of tests and classes.

My boyfriend has over 20 years experience in technology -- and hasn't updated his resume in just as many years. Jeff's unique knowledge of both IT and resume writing helped us create the resume from scratch. Working with Jeff was great, because he's efficient yet personable. He put the time into asking the right questions and quickly turned around a first draft. His style is iterative, so the customer is involved with each draft. The result is a finished product that meets the vision and expectations shared along the way. Thank you, Jeff!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
