I used Mike and his team to help in a desperate situation when my basement flooded when my home was under contact to be sold. He gave me top notch responsiveness and service. The unfortunate thing was that he insisted insurance would cover everything, but they didn't because it was considered flood when water came through the basement window. I moved forward thinking it would be covered, but got that surprise a few days later. The price was high but I felt confident in the work they were doing. I had to have the guys come back to finish something that wasn't done fully/ correctly and they left the place pretty dusty, not cleaned up well. Overall I think this is a great company with fabulous integrity and they really want to do the right thing.

We had a new window/ sliding door installed and need Sheetrock work done plus painting. M&R Remodeling and Repair did an excellent job with our repair. They were professionals and did a good job keeping sheet rock dust to a minimum. We will keep their number for future work and already had them bid another job.

Harvey is incredibly creative and innovative. We have the covered deck of our dreams AND a covered patio. Harvey helped us plan the deck and we several beautiful touches we hadn't thought of, such as a bump/out that mimicked the house and car siding that resulted in a beautiful ceiling for the patio and covered part of the deck. We would definitely do it over!

Matt did a terrific job building a porch on the front of my home. I gave Matt a rough idea of the design and he implemented just as we wanted. I appreciated the attention to detail and Matt's willingness to make everything right.

I hired Mr. Rogers to install some new windows for me and was extremely satisfied. I had 2 other companies give me bids that were much higher plus they couldn't get to it for another 6 weeks or more. Mr. Rogers got it started and finished within 2 days. His price was considerably below the others and his quality of work is fantastic. I feel comfortable recommending him to anyone.

Great Plains Exteriors replaced 20 windows for us and replaced our homes siding. During the process of replacing our windows and siding they found a large sum of wood rot on our house caused from a previous siding and window company taking short cuts. Great Plains Exteriors fixed all the wood rot and made our house look beautiful again. This company knows their business and it shows! From start to finish they were friendly, knowledgeable and true professionals. I would highly recommend Great Plains Exteriors and will be using them again in the future! Great job and thanks for a pleasant home remodel!

I have had Brandon/KC Renovation Concepts do several jobs for me ranging from building a fabulous deck to replacing all of the windows in my home. Brandon is both professional and detailed in the work that he and his crew perform. It is very hard to find someone who cares so much for the customer and takes pride in their work like Brandon does. What is great about this company is that they will take most jobs, big and small. I will continue to refer all of my friends and family to KC Renovations Concepts! Sandy Hall

The K6 Group painted several interior rooms for me, as well as the trim and shutters on the exterior of my home. They did outstanding work and I have retained their services for several more jobs I have coming up, including refinishing my kitchen cabinets, removing wallpaper, installing doors and more. They are trustworthy, friendly, timely and do a very professional job! They have stuck to every bid/quote they have given. I have been nothing but extremely satisfied with their work and I highly recommend them to anyone needing their services!

Robert with Upper Level Construction Installed siding on 7 of our rental properties. 5 of which was duplexes. He did a excellent job and in a reasonable amount of time. He was courteous to the tenants. He also installed many new windows in the properties and did an excellent job. Quickly and without damage to anything. Robert also installed 2 or 3 sliding glass doors for us. He is a pro at everything he has done. Very nice guy and great work! We got several estimates on these jobs and Robert couldn't be beat.

Novella Construction did the siding repair on my home after a storm damaged it. They were able to do the repair at a portion of the cost that other contractors quoted me and the work done was phenomenal! I would definitely recommend them and will be using them for future projects on my home!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
