We were pleased with our experience with Big D Events and Entertainment for our wedding reception. Derrick was responsive to our needs and very courteous. The only thing I would like to have seen is more interaction with the crowd with getting them involved. Overall, however, we were very happy with the services provided.

We had Christopher and Kelly the balloon artists perform at a kids room for my sons wedding. There were 45 children ranging from 6 months to 11 years of age and all the children were fascinated and loved all the balloon characters that Christopher and Kelly made for them along with the magic act from Christopher. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is wanting to entertain children, they were wonderful!!

We've worked with Courtney on everything from our wedding to our infant photos to our Christmas card each year. The photos have been inside with lighting, outside with props, outside without props, candids, and photojournalism style. She has a great eye and always understands exactly what we are going for in a shoot. Highly recommend.

We had a great experience using S&J for our wedding reception! We found him on Thumbtack, and found him to be very responsive and easy to work with. We communicated mostly via facebook messenger, and he was on top of making sure our day went exactly as we wanted it to. He downloaded our specific cover versions of songs, and even emceed a large portion of the evening (first dance, cake cutting, speeches, etc.). 10/10 would hire again - great job, and thank you so much for all of the help making our reception great!

We hired Crescendo Trio for our wedding this summer. Our original musician had backed out at the last minute and we were in a bind because we had very specific song requests that aren't on the usual repertoire for wedding musicians. So one month before our big day, Karla Nichols took on the challenge of our wedding - purchasing our specific music and learning it in time for our event. We couldn't have been happier with the way they went out of their way (quite literally as our wedding was more than an hour drive for them) to make our big day special.

Jen was wonderful from beginning to end. We started with arranging the type of booth we wanted, coordinating with the venue for set up, positioning, etc. then she designed a beautiful motif especially for us that coordinated with the wedding flowers and colors! The end result was a lot of very happy guests who stopped me to say, "Look! We each got our own copy!" Thanks so much Jen for helping to make our wedding even more memorable!

This performance occurred at the 60th wedding anniversary of my parents. It was sort of a large crowd, composed equally of family members and close friends of my parents. The show that Curtis put together for that occasion was very thematic, and focused on togetherness, and the power of one's family. For instance, he performed magic effects that included joining two solid steel rings, symbolic of the union between my mother and father. It was obvious that he had assembled the show specifically for our special night, and my parents were blown away. His stage presence is very warm and friendly. He makes all present feel very involved, and engages actual show participants with charm and easy humor. The magic is ... well, mystical. There are no huge pyrotechnics, no loud music, no audience-numbing strobe lights, but at the conclusion of each effect, I found myself scratching my head and wondering how he had done whatever it was that he did. Curtis made an already momentous occasion all the more memorable for everybody who was there. I will not hesitate to engage his service again when I get the opportunity.

We used Kat for our wedding photography and we couldn't have been more happy. She was super easy to get a hold of and helpful in the process. Her delivery was also just as quick which was really nice. I have to say, it was so FUN working with her an her team. I highly recommend her and I know if we would have done the photo booth we would have loved it too.

I just want to say THANK YOU! again for putting on an amazing show at our wedding. We had so many people coming up to us at the wedding to say it was “the best reception ever.” and “the wedding of the decade.” I know that was all because of the job you did. I have never seen a dance floor that full for every single song. Even friends that don’t dance were out dancing.

Jenni provided her photo booth services for my nephew's wedding in MO. She was very sweet and professional. The book that was provided to the bride and groom after was a wonderful addition. It was a great hit for the evening.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

What is a photo booth rental?

A party photo booth is a fun, interactive experience where guests can take a series of photos (usually three or four) that are immediately printed out on a strip as a keepsake. When you rent a party photo booth, the company sets up the booth or photo station at your event; a photographer staffs the booth and coaches guests on how to use it throughout the event. Often the photo booth rental company provides props like silly hats, wigs and glasses. There are different types of party photo booth rentals. An open-air booth has a curtain or backdrop that allows more freedom of movement and enables more people to use it at one time. The traditional enclosed photo booths that you may have seen at the mall or the fair tend to cost more to rent, as they are harder to transport and also cost more for the pros to purchase. The national average cost for party photo booth rentals is $400-$500.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How much is it to rent a photo booth for a party?

Renting a party photo booth for your next event will get your guests engaged and provide a take-home favor for attendees. The cost to rent a party photo booth will vary depending on the type of booth, the day and time of year, the length of the rental, and any add-ons you select. The national average cost for party photo booth rentals is $400-$500. Here are some examples of average party photo booth rental costs:

  • Weekday packages: $300-$550, depending on features included and length of rental. A three-hour weekday package for $500 could include guest book, personalized photo strips and DVD of all the photos.
  • Weekend packages: $450-$700, depending on features included and length of rental.
  • Additional hours: $100-$150 per extra hour.
