Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

I am completely amazed at how much two movers did within the quoted time frame! This company deserves 10 stars instead of just 5! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

They were on time and extremely respectful and courteous. They placed my daughter’s belongings onto a moving truck in no time flat. I actually thought it would take longer but they showed up and got straight to work! Thanks so much for taking such good care of the work you provided!

First of all the job these guys did for me was beyond huge. We were moving out of a 3000 sq ft home which has 4 BR, 3BA, a den/family and living room. It also has a huge 3 car garage which were all operated on 3 different openers for the 3 different doors. There was a vey quaint storage area under the staircase we lovingly dubbed the Harry Potter room. I would describe it as a 2 story bi-level home. I go through all of that to say that this place was huge and with lots of places to hide things. We have 6 children, 3 grandchildren, 3 birds, 2 dogs, and 2 more dogs that would visit from time to time. Although a lot of the children were old enough to no longer live at home we still had the younger 2 and a lifetime of accrued ‘stuff’ for ALL family members. This wasn’t going to be just a simple move but a huge de-cluttering moment for our family. Everything needed to be done to get our move in order. Sorting, packing, loading, cleaning, unloading, sorting (again), setting furniture up, major cleanup of the old house, shuffling the boxes, and offering to help unpack the boxes. We had tons to donate as well as tons to trash and hopefully less that a ton to move to the new place. This job was so big that even I thought it would never get done. They were actually quite great. There were 4 of them most days and only one of me. They could have gone so much faster if there were more of me to spread around! In the end the job was finally done! They had cleaned the old house as requested, arranged our things at the new house, hauled off the things we were throwing out and things that were being donated. This moving company is virtually a ZERO WASTE company! They sort and recycle as needed and everything you are finally ‘getting rid of’ they figure out if it can be fixed, glued, refinished, refurbished, etc and then they donate to various organizations in need. I love that concept, and with as bad as it is to say this out loud I love that I didn’t have to be the one to think about what to do with it all. I had so much stuff to look through and so many memories to organize and figure out I honestly thought there was no way that we would ever get it all done and I know I made their job a lot harder. However, Levi (the owner of the company) was so patient with me. Never once did he try and rush me or make me feel like I was making everything worse. I know they had to dread coming back to my place everyday but if that were the case I never knew because they always showed up with a smile and didn’t care to dig right in and get dirty all over again! I would definitely hire again!

Justin & Justin were amazing. Crew leader Justin was incredibly forthcoming right away telling me that he noticed that I wanted the 2 hour minimum and that it wasn't a 2 hour job. He then told me that "I can get all of the big furniture and anything that wont fit in a car" and then asked if I would like to pay for the additional time needed for the balance of the boxes to which I voluntarily declined. They ABSOLUTELY HUSTLED the entire time, loaded the truck down safely & carefully (but also VERY promptly) and then asked which rooms we wanted each item in and executed with 100% accuracy. What made it totally awesome is that they set the furniture in the rooms in a way that MADE SENSE (I didn't re-arrange anything, they set up each room with perfection). They finished with 3 minutes to spare (so obviously they estimated the load perfectly) and on top of all of the above they were polite and professional even though they both had a very rough day and were working several hours later than they had expected. If I had to move again I would absolutely use them again and will be recommending them to anyone and everyone I know who needs movers with full confidence. A++ service guys. No reason to look elsewhere, in my opinion.

We didn't have a good experience. One of the movers ruined our kitchen table. They apologized and said they would make it right; asked if they could send it to get fixed. We agreed accidents happen. However, a week goes by no call so we call and ask they say oh just a few more days. We call back in 3 days still not ready. They make a delivery date Josh comes out in person himself; and this is where it gets worse he puts the table together and then shows us the shitty repair they did themselves. They never sent it off to be repaired they tried to fix it themselves. He offered us $60 cash its all he had on him to make it right. Mind you this is a $1000 table that is no longer available for purchase. We said no you need to do better than that so he says I will send you $100 check when I get back to the office. We tried finding someone to fix it and they quoted us $140 to fix it however they didn't have any available appointments so that is all I will offer you for it. SO, not only did he lie he is a crook. I would say find someone else to move you they do not do good business.
