Steve responded in a timely manner to my plumbing job. He was able to review the work and get started the next day. I had a sink removed and a shelf installed in its place. I liked that he took the time to make sure the shelf fit properly. I will definitely call him again for another job!

We needed a main faucet changed out. The house was built in 1959 so there was some funky plumbing done. Galen needed different parts and had to come back another day with no change in his estimate. Highly recommend Galen for any job you may have.

We had a major remodel done by Rescue 1. We had the wall removed between the kitchen and living room. They replaced the ceiling, walls, flooring, cabinets, plumbing, and electrical. While they were doing the demo, they discovered we had a bad carpenter ant infestation. If they wouldn’t have been doing such a thorough job, I hate to think of how long it would have taken us to discover the damage. If you are looking for quality work, I would recommend them to anyone planning a major remodel project. They will not cut corners nor use sub-standard materials. They made my dream kitchen a reality.

I needed a hole cored in a floor for conduit. Calvert was the only one to respond, and quickly. While they couldn't help, Calvert referred me to another company who does exactly what I need. I'll definitely go to Calvert Plumbing for my next plumbing project!

Our first time to hire Jim was to do some drywall repair from some house settling. He did an excellent job in the repair work and the walls look great. We also had him paint the walls afterwards. Painting was done in an excellent manner and Jim was always very tidy and cleaned up his work areas at the end of each day. We also had him give us a quote and then hired him to tear out and replace a full shower in our master bath. This included tearing out old tile, cutting out the old drywall and replacing it with new moisture barrier drywall. He also revamped our plumbing in the shower and then hung new ceramic tile, accent tile and shower doors as well as replacing the shower basin. In addition we had him hang bathroom fixtures and paint that room as well. He was always very thorough in his jobs and was very neat and tidy. We would definitely recommend Jim for any jobs that you would have with drywall, plumbing and painting.

Aaron is very prompt in all his communications. He arrived on time and is just a nice, polite guy to work with. He repaired a water leak in the conduit behind a swimming pool light for me. His combined knowledge of electrical, plumbing and pools made him the perfect fit for this unique job. I will definitely inquire of him the next time I need help with any project or repair.

This was an excellent experience. James (Jim) helped me over the phone to decide if I needed a service call, and was out the next day. He was super professional, nice, funny, and very knowledgeable. He diagnosed the issue and went way above and beyond to make sure I could use my washer and dryer. I guarantee you'll not find a better plumbing service with this level of service at affordable prices. If any other plumbing needs arise, this will be the first call I make. Do not hesitate -- you'll be pleased with the work!

What a great guy. I first tried getting ahold of Kevin he never answered an when asked told me all the unfamiliar calls usually were sales calls I laughed because my husband is the same way lol But so so happy I contacted Kevin to fix our 2 side by side 40 gallon waterheaters. He had them removed and cut an adjusted flu pipe and gas pipe and had the 2 new installed with expansion tanks before I knew it. Very happy very satisfied and if I have any questions I call him and he is so helpful and knowledgeable in every aspect of service. I highly recommend kevin for all your plumbing needs. Thank you and I will be calling kevin again for next item to be addressed. Thank you

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
