Steve came out and replaced my water heater even when it required some extra work. He even came out on a Sunday and stayed till it was done. Was happy with his work and his pricing. Felt comfortable having him work in my home with me and my small child. Would hire again for other handyman jobs!

I decided at the last minute to have my empty house staged before a weekend open house. Whitney responded quickly to my request and with just 3 days notice she developed a great design plan and furnished three bedrooms, a small office, two living spaces and kitchen breakfast area. She was very professional, I thought her price was reasonable and I would definitely recommend her for your decorating project.

Shandy was a huge help in providing a second pair of eyes in decorating our living room. We moved into our house in August but had mostly empty walls until she came in January. She helped me style the mantle, pick out curtains and art for our living room. I was so hesitant to get it wrong that I hadn't hung anything. After the weekend, our house felt like a home and I love it! Sometimes it just takes a little help to refine your ideas and give feedback to make your space feel complete. I would definitely work with her again!

Brenda was right on time and was able to see beyond the remodeling mess that she walked into. In about an hour she was able to get a good idea of how we would be using these rooms, discuss furniture and wall colors, and take photos and measurements. Looking forward to working with her again.

Jeff and his team recreated a kitchen for my family. His team of professionals refinished our cabinets, installed a counter top and much more. We've since called on Jeff for a number of projects in our home. He's honest, straight-forward and creative.

Becky came into our home and listened carefully to our concerns and wishes before lining out an extremely affordable, beautiful and functional plan to address our problems. In a short time she solved our window covering situations and even came and helped install everything. Her follow-up call to see if we had any questions or problems was unexpected, but greatly appreciated. I highly recommend Becky for any decorating needs you might have. Paul

Interior Remodel of our home about 1400 SF. Removed my stress level, made excellent suggestions, listened to our wants and executed in a very tight timeline. Accompanied me to look at our options, presented pros and cons for us to consider. In the end she satisfied us 100%. We are very proud of what she did for us and would recommend her to everyone.

They did an excellent job on my bathroom. They did the work promptly and did exactly what I wanted. It is very well done for a very fair price. I just love it-it turned out so beautifully. I will definitely go back to them for more work on my home, and recommend them to anyone wanting quality work on their home.

Working with Vanessa in Creative Solutions was one of the best decisions I've ever made when it comes to home improvements! I must say I have been known to be quite the DIY kind of guy and very stubborn at times. But after talking with her and hearing her out and giving in just a bit I can truly say that I can be happier with the outcome. Not to mention the numerous compliments I have received since has always been a good feeling. I have to highly recommend her services and you must believe me you won't be disappointed. In fact I am looking into my next project and hoping that she is available myself....Lol!

My wife and I bought an older home in Kansas City in 2014. It was supposed to be our dream house and had a “friend” as a realtor so we felt confident we were getting a fair deal and there were not going to be any hidden surprises. Well, it was nothing but surprises. The house had problems from plumbing, to electricity, to HVAC. We had no experience fixing up a home so we starting hiring companies and contractors randomly as we came across them. Well after having been taken over and over again, we literally were about to give up and just take a huge loss on our house. We decided to try one last time to right the ship and signed a contract with Susan as a project manager for our home. Immediately she was able to organize all the projects and began chipping away at them. She was able to source several qualified workers from custom doors, landscaping, drainage, HVAC, cable, electric and even helped dealing with city. Her approach was tough but fair with the workers allowing my wife and I to slowly return to a normal life. We were able to trust her very quickly with being our eyes while we both worked at our jobs. She sourced several companies that we would never have found and was able to see the project done from beginning to end. These projects totaled well over $20,000 but nothing was too much for Susan. She literally worked to pick up all the pieces and NO MORE Surprises!

About

I am a talented decorator. I love to use what you have, and allow you to see it in a new way! Being a massage therapist for over nine years, I believe your home should reflect who you are. Your space should be a peaceful, comfortable retreat. I am naturally inclined to an organic flow with decorating. Creative Designs is a business I started 12 years ago with decorative painting and design which allowed me to help many with not only custom paint finishes, but also with helping them decorate with what they already had. Massage has helped me to realize many can be healed when their environment is balanced with things they love not just things they are sold on TV or a magazine. Organic flow is what I call it, as it flows from me easily. My Passion is helping you with healing design! I am Debbie King.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
