We had a major remodel done by Rescue 1. We had the wall removed between the kitchen and living room. They replaced the ceiling, walls, flooring, cabinets, plumbing, and electrical. While they were doing the demo, they discovered we had a bad carpenter ant infestation. If they wouldn’t have been doing such a thorough job, I hate to think of how long it would have taken us to discover the damage. If you are looking for quality work, I would recommend them to anyone planning a major remodel project. They will not cut corners nor use sub-standard materials. They made my dream kitchen a reality.

Great job job done by this company. The work was done quickly, efficiently, and I appreciated the politeness of everyone I came in contact with. I would encourage the use of M&R if you want an honest, quality, completed project. (Two bathrooms floors tiled, new commodes, light fixtures and a pedestal sink replaced, and all old fixtures hauled away!) John & Connie D.

I was asking for quotes on vinyl floor installation. Eddy came in and had such good prices for his hardwood floors, that I was able to afford the hardwood. He and his crew finished timely and did a good job of not leaving a mess. My floors look beautiful. I've already handed Eddy's card out to several people I work with who is looking to have some work done. I would highly recommend Eddy if you're needing this done.

We had two double windows replaced, a plate glass bathroom window replaced with an acrylic glass block window, and had a half moon window removed and replaced with lap siding on the exterior and sheetrock on the interior. The work was done quickly and expertly - could not have asked for a better first time experience with a private contractor! We highly recommend Marcus!

A carpenter from Supreme Contracting replaced the crown molding on the exterior of my house. This is an architectural detail on an old home and I had trouble finding someone to do this. I spoke with Mark on the phone and he sent someone that day to take a look at it and we made an agreement that same day. On the scheduled day, his carpenter came out and had the job done before I got home from work. It was done very well and looks wonderful. I would absolutely hire this company again for future jobs!

Working with A&J Brothers has been a great experience. They completed a full home sheet rock job that looks great. They also tiled a bathroom floor and a shower that turned out great. The house is an older home and they were able to account for how the home has settled. Their rates are very competitive. I have really enjoyed working with them.

We have used Limas flooring for all of our hardwood floor needs. They originally installed hardwoods for our build job of our home and since we have added hardwoods to our bedroom and study. We were totally pleased on all occasions. The flooring looks as though they were all put in at the same time. We are having them back for a third time to round out our first floor to all hardwoods. Easy to work with and they will always make things right.

Hardwood and Carpet Installation. Showed up on time, fair price, did what they said they'd do. I would use again if we move, hopefully all done with this house. I'd recommend to others.

Don Fotheringhame from 221 construction came personally to discuss the project I had in mind. I Couldn't be happier with the professionalism, or results that Don provided. Easy to reach, affordable prices, prompt, and clean. I would call with any renovation, or construction need and certainly recommend to any one. I have a concrete floor in my basement that isn't level, which I need for a workspace. After going over the pro's and con's of multiple options I decided to have 221 Construction build a raised wood floor. I thank you for a result that goes beyond my expectations.

Being able to choose our flooring options in our own home worked very well for us. I have now replaced carpet, tile, or laminate in 3 different homes and this was by far the best experience as well as the best price. Highly highly recommend.

Job entailed removing five very old wooden windows and replacing them with five new vinyl windows and framing/sealing them in on a very old house. Mr. Ullius went down, measured the openings, selected the new windows, and then in a very timely fashion installed the five windows in less then two weeks. Considering the amount of work entailed for each window that was amazing to me (only him doing the work). His work was outstanding, he did not cut corners, and keep me informed throughout the project with pictures. His honesty and integrity are outstanding and he can be trusted to do what he said he will do when he says he will do it.. I can recommended him without reservation for any project you need.

Ed coated our garage floors and installed cabinetry and slat wall. Super nice guy! Easy to work with and the garages look great. He went the extra mile to get the job done on time. Just wish I could pay him to put all our stuff away in the cabinets for us!

Don't usually write reviews but i felt compelled too after dealing with Mike. We had 2 other installers come out to take out some bubbles we had in the living area that we were tired of looking at and both installers said "There is no way to get rid of them" or "It's going to have to be replaced". Figuring would get one more opinion I called Mike and he came out that afternoon and looked and told me it was pretty bad but easily doable. Took him about 2 hours, charged me $125 with trip which was more than fair. Then about a week later he came and put in a back splash on our bar area even though he told me he was "retired" from tile :) ....did a great job on it too, Both projects are holding up nicely and the quality of work was beyond what i ever expected. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

        • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
        • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
          • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
        • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
        • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
          • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
        • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
          • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
          • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
          • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
            • Includes removal of the dura rock.
        • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

        • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
          • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
        • 620 square feet of maple floor:
          • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
          • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
            • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
