From the beginning-to-end of my experience with Maintenance Solutions I was thoroughly-impressed. Rachel & Jeremy are a terrific team, who responded to my service requests with honesty, professionalism, both listening to understand my two plumbing needs (outdoor faucet replacement & related indoor plumbing alterations and shower faucet repair). Jeremy was on time; honored the home (with protective footwear - to prevent carpet and floor damage); performed all work quickly & efficiently; answered all my questions (before - during and after each project); thoroughly cleaned the work areas (not common with many plumbers); and made suggestions on how to have my plumbing needs met in a cost-efficient manner. I almost forgot...He informed me on how to properly use my water shut-off valve to avoid future repair needs. I will definitely call on them again and recommend them to others.

Very personable. On time. Great prices. Talked in terms that we, as non-plumbers, could understand. Hopefully we won't need services anytime soon. But if we do in the future - we'll be calling on Sewer Surgeon.

Steve was quick to respond and knowledgeable about my sump pump in a bucket situation that other plumbers balked at. Instead, Steve was efficient and affordable, friendly, and professional. We will definitely use his services again. He even mopped the floor when he was done.

I had water spilling into my basement that was caused by a sewer line clog. The first dudebro plumber that came out made the problem WORSE and charged me over $430, which I will be salty about forever. He then recommended I replace my sewer line because the pipes were so old, they likely had tree roots growing in them, or they had collapsed or been crushed and were no longer functional for whatever reason. The job would take 3-4 Days (in which we’d be without water/sewer) and would cost $5,000 to $12,000. Ya’ll, I am a 39 year old widow with 2 young kids and that news nearly sent me to the funny farm, I literally COULD NOT. Mom came over for sympathy and told me to put my info into this Thumbtack thingy and I did so whilst crying like a 4 year old who just dropped their ice cream. Like 3 seconds later Joe calls me and immediately puts me at ease. He says he can fix it. He can do it a hell of a lot cheaper. And he can do it faster. Shut up and take my money, right? Less than 48 hours later he and his boys are at my house, digging up the traitorous sewer pipes. They work fast and when the sun goes down they bust out the lamps and flashlights and KEEP WORKING until the damn job is done. That very night my kids had baths, we flushed ALL the toilets without having to say prayers first, and I washed the dishes that had birthed their own ecosystem. And the best part was he charged me less than $3,000 with promises that he would be speaking to the city about their crappy pipes and might even stick a camera down there to see just what exactly was up. So tl;dr I have a new plumber, his name is Joe and he kicked my sewer clog’s ass. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Austin was very fast responding to my request and finished the job quickly. As far as pricing goes, he was not out of his mind like some other plumbers. I would definitely call him back for my next plumbing project.

We just bought a home in Lee's Summit, Missouri. When we looked at the home, we noticed a sour sewage smell. Other than that we loved the house. The selling agent assured us that the smell would be addressed before we moved in. We hired Bull Dog Inspections to inspect the house. The inspector and the plumber working with him said they couldn't find the source of the odor and suggested that we just air out the house. The selling agent hired a plumber and he said the problem was that a vent in the basement wasn't capped. So he capped the vent and declared it fixed. The selling agent also had the air vents cleaned. When we did the final walk through of the house, we continued to smell the sewage odor. We should have refused to close until the problem was fixed, but we took possession of the house. We hired a plumber to address the problem and he said the sewer vent in the basement was causing the problem. He replaced the vent and declared it fixed, but we continued to smell the sewage odor. So we decided to approach it from the Heating and Cooling system angle. We hired Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling to do normal maintenance to our HVAC system and while they were here we asked them to trouble shoot the sewage odor problem. The first thing they pointed out was that the furnace exhaust was on the roof and it was only about 21 inches away from the sewage exhaust vent It is unusual for a furnace exhaust vent to run UP to the roof. When it was windy we could smell the odor even stronger because the wind was pushing the sewage exhaust down through the furnace vent. Instead of stopping there, fixing that problem and declaring it fixed, Clint and Chris suggested that they do a smoke test which, most of the time, definitely determines the source of a sewage system odor. A smoke bomb is set off in the sewage system and if there is a crack in a pipe or an exhaust problem it will show up. When the smoke bomb was set off, smoke came billowing out of the return air vent in the main living area. They cut into the return air vent to take a look and found a 2 inch sewage exhaust pipe inside the return air vent. The return air vent has been pushing toxic sewage gas through the whole house. Clint and Chris from Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling didn't give up until they found the root causes (plural) of the problem. They systematically diagnosed the problem, one layer at a time. They permanently fixed the problem, not with a quick band aid fix, but used the best possible solution to be sure the system was running efficiently and the air circulating in the house was clean and safe to breathe. We hired Clint and Chris from Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling to do routine maintenance on our heating and cooling system and they solved a highly unusual problem that many experts before them were not able to figure out. We are so appreciative of their persistence and their determination to fix a problem that could have seriously affected our health.

Overall I'm very satisfied. He was a little pricey for the job however the quality of the work is very good and perhaps I'm just stingy. He took one look at the site and knew exactly how to accomplish the task. He was very prompt, communicative, and quick. Additionally, he actually used Thumbtack as it was intended instead of giving me a canned "I'm a plumber, call me for quotes". He gave me a ballpark quote, then after answering a question or 2 we contacted over the phone for the rest.

This company - was very professional, punctual, and responsive to our call (we are new to Thumbtack). We had hired another plumber through Thumbtack a month earlier who came, did part of job, ordered a part and never came back. Contacted this plumber on Friday July 27. He came Saturday even though he had a prior personal commitment on that day. He had to get additional part. Got the part and came back to complete job. Good quality work and reasonable price. Very respectful of our time. AWESOME11

John, and a very nice co-worker (I didnt get her name) came out and performed the necessary service; then listened to me as I further explained the problem. John got his snake camera and showed me what the problem was (not what I originally thought,) diagnosed what needed to be done, and explained to me how to accomplish what I needed. I didnt feel oversold (as a service provider myself, I value this greatly!) because he showed me, and explained how to remedy what needed to be done. I asked him what else he would recommend, and he told me we would tackle the best long-term solution once we could fully evaluate the scope. I trust him to do right by my needs, and shoot me straight - unlike the other plumbing companies who I consulted with, that have minimums for hours and sales pitches. John has told me what he can accomplish and the timeframe...he has worked with my availability as well and took a call afterhours. Highly recommend his expertise as a master plumber! Thanks, John!

My kids bathtub tub was draining incredibly slow (thanks to encouraging my daughter to paint- little did I know she had been pouring her used paints down the drain). After multiple failed attempts to fix it myself- I realized, I am not a plumber. Plus who wants to actually do this?! Oh wait...plumbers actually WANT to do this! They are trained & certified to deal with the messes we make! Polestar is extremely qualified in plumbing & heating & cooling. I should have made the phone call to them at the first sight of problems instead of causing myself a headache! Danny came out to diagnose the issue. Gave me a written proposal of the work that needed to be done -with upfront pricing even! I agreed to move forward with the repairs. Mike followed shortly after to do the repairs needed. Both guys were extremely respectful of my home, wore their shoe covers to prevent tracking in anything. Incredibly polite & communicated with me throughout the entire process. They genuinely cared about my problems, fixed it within a couple hours & we were good to go! The office staff answering the phones were wonderful as well. Great plumbers, technicans & office staff. I can not thank them enough!!!

Can't express how impressed I was with the service. Quick response to my request - Bobby was not only on time, but called to see if he could arrive early. Fixed my leak at a good price. Last week I had called another plumber and they said they would have to cut my drywall to get to the problem - Not the case. We will be using Bobby again! Thanks so much!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

        • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
        • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
        • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
