Introduction: I imagine what sets me apart from so many other private studio teachers is that I include laughter and fun as part of the learning process. Learning how to play an instrument can be a lonely and frustrating journey, especially while practicing at home. Lessons, then, need to be a joyful experience! I do my best to make sure that students look forward to their lessons. The students are what I like most about my job! It is a constant challenge and a joy to interact with so many different personalities and abilities. The most important thing about my job is to help each individual student connect with the joy of music-making.

My daughter started playing piano at age 8 is about to turn 18. She has been taking piano lessons with Cathan for the past five years and it has been a completely amazing experience! Cathan is a wonderful person who truly cares about her students. She has not only been an excellent teacher, but also someone my daughter truly admires and enjoys being with every week. In her lessons, she has inspired my daughter and given her a deeper and richer experience by helping her understand the time periods that the music was written in, who the composers were and the story they were telling with their music. Cathan has a way of integrating all of this effortlessly during her lessons and it has helped my daughter develop into a more mature pianist. When she plays now, her music if full of emotion and depth--it is so much fun to listen to her play. The relationship she has developed with Cathan over the years has given her a greater confidence in all areas of her life and education. There were times when my daughter struggled--Cathan patiently walked her through those times and found new ways to motivate and inspire her, and for that we are truly grateful. It has been a joy to work with Cathan--she is a gifted teacher and an exceptional human being.

Cathan is an excellent piano teacher and just a joy as a human being. She teaches two of my children piano, age 1st & 3rd grade. These two kids are *very* different in personality and in desire to take lessons, and Cathan handles both with ease. She accepts nothing less than excellence, but is never harsh, always finding new ways to encourage my kids to greater music-making. Her philosophy is that you have the most fun when you are really achieving something, which is a great life lesson in general. I love to see my kids learning this as they build their piano skills.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
$25.00 for a 30-minute lesson - applies to most beginning children; $37.50 for a 45-minute lesson - applies to most older children and adults; $50.00 for a 60-minute lesson - applies to more advanced students; $75.00 for a 90-minute lesson - applies to advanced audition/competition students
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I offer a free 30 minute trial lesson to see if we are a good fit. Clients can use that time to get to know me and ask questions. I recommend a trial lesson with each teacher you are considering.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
While working on my music degrees, I discovered that I love to teach! I have been teaching now for over 30 years. I teach a traditional, classical foundation which can also be a stepping stone to other instruments and other musical styles. In addition, I am a free-lance musician in the Kansas City area, playing violin and piano for weddings, receptions, banquets, and concerts.
