Steve was quick to respond and knowledgeable about my sump pump in a bucket situation that other plumbers balked at. Instead, Steve was efficient and affordable, friendly, and professional. We will definitely use his services again. He even mopped the floor when he was done.

Prompt and professional. Excellent work. Jose did a great job matching the existing knockdown texture when patching my ceiling. He protected the floors and furniture and cleaned up after himself. Highly recommend.

We just purchased a house that had hardwood floors throughout. They had paint all over them so we knew we needed to have them refinished and it would be best to do before we moved into the house. We never had hardwood floors so this was a new experience for us. We posted on Thumbtack and found Eddie who we used to do our work. Eddie was so wonderful! The floors came out amazing and I absolutely love the way they look. Eddie was so helpful in helping me choose the right stain to achieve the look I was looking for. He was so easy to work with. The work was done on time and exactly how long he told me it would take and everything was cleaned up after they were done. I highly recommend using Eddie’s company BR Silva Construction, LLC.

Ron and Katie surpassed my expectations; they were on-time, professional, efficient (finished the project in half the time), and I trusted them in my house and with my dogs. The project itself looks great. They painted 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and my hallway. I was so pleased with Ron's work ethic and product, we're now in talks for new flooring/doors and trim. Highly recommend!

My wife and I really liked Working with TMC., they were professional, quick, responsive and so easy to work with. We had some storm damage and needed drywall replaced and a finished basement refinished and painted. We used this as an opurtinity to update the colors and brighten up the space but needed some help deciding on colors. We are so happy with how things look! Thanks TMC!

Just wanted to say thank you – my floors look fabulous! I personally wanted to thank you for the exceptional work you company and installers provided in refurbishing, sanding and replacing damaged panels of my hardwood floors. I have worked with numerous contractors throughout the years and have never been really impressed by other contractor's professionalism or the quality of the work. I really appreciated Lima’s Flooring starting the job at the specified time and finishing the work on the agreed time schedule and taking the time to provide me the background details and steps that would be taken to minimize the dust in the house when sanding the floor. Your representatives were all very courteous. I was most impressed by the quality of the completed job and the timing from my initial call, scheduled walk-through to actual work complete. The wood floor makeover turned out better than I had expected. I was initially concerned about the level of customer service and how punctual the installers might be as I have a busy schedule during the week. In a world where customer service is mediocre at best, I was surprised with the people and their work at Lima’s Flooring. Lima’s takes great pride in their work and it showed throughout the process of refurbishing my hardwood floor. I am extremely satisfied with the refurbished hardwood floor and it looks brand new! I recommend Lima’s flooring to anyone needing hardwood flooring services.

Don the owner was a very gracious and kind man, I appreciated his honesty more than the excellent work he did! He gave a quote and stuck to his quote for my roof and ice cradle repairs. It took one day and he cleaned up behind himself as well. I wish I had discovered him before I had other work done , but I most def will use him in the future if ever needed!

Vaz helped us restore our hardwood floors back to new after we’d gotten some deep scratches in a few prominent areas. We didn’t know if it was possible, but he was able to color match our stain and seal so that the areas blend perfectly with the rest of the flooring. He was punctual, considerate of our time, communicative with schedule, and quickly made our flooring look new again! Thanks Vaz!!

Heath Gentry is passionate about hardwood floors, but more importantly, he's committed to customer satisfaction and making sure you get exactly the look you want. I particularly liked his willingness to educate us about the overall process, custom-mix stain colors, and provide stained board samples to make sure we knew what we'd be getting. He is patient in both his customer interactions and pace of work--doing things right rather than just rushing to completion. And he keeps the job site as tidy, clean, and uncluttered as possible. The end result looks terrific. Five stars for Gentry's Hardwood Flooring!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
