Ben was professional and he fixed a very bad shower tile project from another contractor. I should have hired him from day one and would have saved many headaches.

I purchased the granite and tile for a kitchen makeover, but was in over my head. A friend recommended Custom Settings. I called Shaun and he was able to get me installed on time and on budget. It looks great and I will be working with him on a future project. Thanks again Shaun!

We had Gary with G Johnson Remodeling finish our unfinished half bath in our basement. He put all the tile in, baseboards, toilet, vanity, mirror, lights and towel rack. We went from not having anything to having a fully functioning bathroom in just a few days! We are very happy with it and would recommend G Johnson Remodeling to anyone!

MR. Phelps came to my house and spent about 15 minutes looking at what I needed done. He verbally estimated $75 for the job and we agreed he would do the work the next day. Since we did not have anything in writing he could not get a hold of me to tell me he would not be there at 10:30 a.m. as agreed. We he did find my number he called at 1:50 and said he would be there soon. He finally showed at 4:00. He did the job and decided to return the next day to put finishing touches and clean up. He was on time this time. I was not able to be home by the time he finished and my wife paid him. He charged $100 for the work, which was satisfactory and he did do more than we had discussed. However, he also charged a $50.00 "consultation fee" for the approximately 15 minutes he spent looking at what needed to be done. For this reason I cannot give him the 5 star rating requested and I will find someone else if I decide to do the other bathroom. I also spent approximately 45 minutes doing additional cleanup of dried grout and caulk on the tiles walls around the tub.

We hired Jerry to fully paint our new home, tile our bathrooms and laundry room, add a kitchen backsplash, and update sinks and shower in our bathrooms. He did a tremendous job with all of the work, with a careful eye to detail. He also helped us to add a few "extras," like under-cabinet lighting, once he got started. He was trustworthy, hard-working, and did a really quality job. We found the pricing fair and straight-forward, with Jerry willing to work with us to help us save money as we moved along. We absolutely plan to work with Jerry again in the future!

Dan recently replaced all interior doors and exterior. A lot of issues came up with the walls and was able to accomplish all tasks in no time. He placed custom trim and crown molding which turned out amazing. We had a very complex and difficult transionital strip from tile to hardwood which he was able to blend very nicely. We were so pleased with his work we allowed him to place a 12' x 24' composite deck with exterior lighting in the posts. Outstanding work and very knowledgable and professional. Highly recommend for any type of project not only for the pricing but the type of work you get out of it all!! If you would like to see pictures I am willing to provide!

Ken Witt did an amazing job on enlarging and redoing our entire shower area. He was completely trustworthy, neat, and precise. We would use him again in a heartbeat for any future remodeling. He also laid ceramic tile in the bathroom. Perfect grout lines; great work. Love the finished product.

The first time Chris came to my home was to install 800 sq/ft of laminate flooring. He and his team were professional and courteous to my family. They finished the job in one day and that included sawing down my door frames to accommodate the height of the laminate flooring. Since then, Chris and his team have tiled both my bathrooms, an entry way and laid all the carpet in my house. Not to mention paining most of my upstairs rooms. If you are looking for a good contractor with fair prices, that can tackle most any jobs. Look no more than Chris and the crew from Northeast Ceramic Tile.

I've used Demi Remodeling a few times. At our first house they built a deck and completely remodeled a kitchen for us, opening up the kitchen to the living room, and the house to the yard. It was a total transformation that made the house feel more inviting. It was so nice, I didn't want to leave our first house and I wish I still had that kitchen and the big door to the backyard! The people who bought our first house mentioned the beautiful kitchen and new layout as the reason they picked our house. At our new house, Demi Remodeling has done our roof, rebuilt a wall that had been water damaged, fix some foundation concerns, and remodeled the 30 year old bathroom into an oasis complete with heated tile floors and a tile surround. We've recommended them to friends and family, and everyone who has used them has been just as thrilled as we are. My mom had them take her new house down to the studs and rebuild almost every room. She is thrilled with her new kitchen, bigger bathroom, finished basement, new siding, and hardwood floors throughout. (They made her year when they went out of their way to match her new flooring to the original flooring in her kitchen.) We are planning on using Demi Remodeling several more times, as my wishlist keeps getting longer: a deck and garage outside, an extra bathroom and remodeled kitchen inside, just to name a few! They are professional, friendly, and fair in their pricing. I absolutely recommend them for any job, inside or out.

Ian installed a tiled backsplash to go around our kitchen. Before he even started the tile he went the extra mile to level our countertops so that everything would look nice. The job looks fantastic and he always kept a tidy workspace. 10/10, would hire again.

Chris and his crew did a great job on cleaning the tile and grout on our kitchen floor. They did the grout color as well and it turn out great. They were very though and really cared about doing the job rite. After finished with the job Chris was still looking over the job and said he wanted to make sure it was perfect cause he didn't want to put his name on it unless it was. His pricing was about the same with the competition but is a local business and did a great job I always recommend hiring a local company over a franchise if there credible. They are credible and I recommend them for another job.

I had my entire kitchen tiled by Tyler and it turned out beautiful. The work was completed when promised at the price that was as agreed to. Tyler matched my foyer with the same tile in a different pattern. The house looks great because of Tyler's flooring. I would definitely recommend Tyler for any flooring job!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.
