Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

For a first time dog owner, I had no clue about who to go to for dog training, but within the very first interactions with Haven, she eased any concerns and questions I had. She was responsive to my questions even before I had dropped my dog off for training. She emphasized TEACHING before correction, which was a concern of mine because some trainers would just rather correct immediately. I was also concerned that my dog would be anxious and uneasy, but her welcoming demeanor and obvious love of dogs made him feel right at home the moment he walked through the door. She continues to be responsive and re-walk me through steps even after my dog’s 10 days of training were over. She made sure to document my pup’s training progress through a detailed YouTube video that talked through her process in rewarding and correcting behavior. This way, I can reference the video if I forgot any steps. Also, as a college student raising a puppy, Haven’s rates are the most affordable from the competition. I appreciate that I have her as a source to not only guide my dog in his training but also to guide me to be a good trainer for my dog. Overall, would definitely recommend! Thank you! From Katie and Luka :)

In summary: After a few training sessions with Wendy, we have seen a significant improvement in our puppy's behavior and are very happy that we paid for this training. Wendy was extremely knowledgable on how to train a puppy using positive reinforcement and fun games that you can play with your dog. She had answers to all of our questions, and even helped us train our older dog too. Wendy followed up each training session with emails containing a summary of the training session, in depth guides on various training techniques, and links to pet supplies that she recommends. I think I understand my puppy better now because she explained why he was probably doing what he was doing, which has helped me react more appropriately to his actions. If you're looking for a professional dog trainer, you will not regret hiring Wendy.

Jodi is an awesome and very knowledgeable trainer. She trained our dog Ammo to not attack the door and be aggressive when someone was outside or approaching. He learned basic commands and leash walking as well. We love Jodi and so does Ammo!

Very good, positive training techniques for our aggressive Australian Shepard. Noticed improved behavior quickly, which means I might not have to use that umbrella insurance policy I have..ha. And Jodi comes to my house, so training is with us, and in a normal setting environment for the dog.

Overall I thought she was amazing. I was nervous dropping off my dog because I have never left him with a stranger but she would always send pictures and videos on my dog. My dog didn’t know how to walk on leash, begged whenever I ate food and barks at everyone but after Haven’s training he has been so much better. She also will always answer questions after you get your dog back too. Pricing is good overall and worth it! Loved her!!

Jodi has been great to work with. We adopted a senior dog, Sugar, whom we were having difficulty housetraining. She was also very timid and not confident at all. Jodi has provided us with both in-home training as well as board and trains. We have also boarded Sugar with Jodi when we’ve gone out of town... and will continue to solely use Jodi for boarding as we know Sugar is well taken care of and enjoying herself! Sugar is now more confident and much-improved on the housetraining front. Her manners have also improved. It is really a delight for us to see Sugar come out of her shell and be more confident in many areas. Jodi utilizes only positive reinforcement and is great with dogs... you can tell it is her sincerest passion. We are so glad we’ve found Jodi!!

When I adopted my dog the shelter told me he was a one year old flat-coated retriever mix. He was very excitable and didn't behave the way I expected, which I know is common with rescues. It didn't take long for me to realize that Melvin and I needed professional help! One of the first things Jodi did was tell me that, based on behavior and cutting teeth, I had a border collie puppy mix! Even though I was surprised I was delighted that Jodi knows dogs so well that she can recognize a breed based on interactions. And that influenced how she worked with him and how she told me to work with him. Melvin has a lot of border collie habits, for better or for worse, and that includes LOTS of energy and a love for everyone. He was even jumping on top of my glass coffee table! I didn't think there would be any way to curb that behavior but Jodi taught us some training exercises and we put the kibosh on table jumping within a day. He also HATED his crate and Jodi helped us make it a good, safe place for him. She didn't just tell us how to train him with it but also where it should go and when we should size up (since she could tell he was going go grow - another surprise for us!). When we first learned that the low-key young dog we thought we'd adopted was actually a high energy puppy, our first thought was rehoming because I didn't know if I could give Melvin what he needed. Jodi taught both Melvin and me how to keep him safe and happy. This dog is my best friend and I couldn't have had that relationship without Jodi's help. She knows and loves dogs and it's clear that she's an expert. We're done with training for now but we still call Jodi for boarding because we know she's the best. I feel like I'm sending Melvin to summer camp when he's with Jodi because he's going to have so much fun, make so many friends, and come back happy and exhausted. We couldn't ask for a better experience 😁

Haven had quite a task in caring for my big dude. Crash is a large dog that needed a lot of help with leash training. But more than crash needing it, I did as well. Leaving Crash with Haven for 10 days has helped him build confidence, and given me confidence moving forward. I still have work to do, but feel that Haven did the absolute best job possible and building the foundation needed for my sweet guy. She is incredibly responsive, and the way she interacted with my baby boy warmed my heart.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that Jodi helped change my life. I had quite an unruly lab (Oliver) that I could not control inside or out. From the first lesson, I could tell that this was going to be a positive experience. Oliver barked at her as soon as she walked in and ten minutes later, it was like they were best friends. The first visit she provided me with more than enough homework to get started with training Oliver and taught me things about him that I would have never known. It has amazed me how much Oliver has changed since we began training. He is a whole new dog. It did not take Jodi long to figure out his learning style and adapt to what he needed at that moment. Anytime he is not responding to one technique, she always has a backup plan to fix the issue. The best part of the entire experience is that Oliver has fun during sessions and loves when Jodi comes over. She is always very responsive and encourages you to text her anytime you need help. If you need someone to help you figure out your stubborn friend, Jodi is your trainer.

We have met for one session so far, and meeting with Kevin has already been helpful in understanding some of our dog's behavior more and learning tools to work with her in various situations. I really appreciated the prompt response from Kevin, checking in over the phone and getting some tips, resources, and guidance prior to our first meeting, and the ongoing support and open communication line he has provided right away. Kevin is very knowledgeable and is all about positive reinforcement, which is what we were looking for. We are starting to do clicker training and it is going well so far - we are hopeful for the progress she can make with our continuous practice and learning!

We contacted Jodi regarding our Rottweiler puppy "Obi". He has an extremely high drive, and was beginning to show aggression issues. Trimming his nails became almost impossible as was putting in ear drops when he had an infection. Walking in the neighborhood became an issue as well, as he was always jumping on people and wanting to play with other dogs while walking. Jodi showed us a different approach in how we dealt with Obi. Instead or trying to "force" Obi to do what we wanted, she showed us how to use positive reinforcement through choice to get him to do the things we wanted from him. She really does make it look easy. Obi absolutely loves Jodi, we will always be grateful to her for showing us a different approach other than dominance based training. Trying to force a Rottweiler with aggression issues to do something he doesn't want to do wasn't a pleasant thing. Obi now willingly lets us trim his nails. (With a Dremel) and walks calmly through the neighborhood ignoring distractions. He still gets excited and jumps on people occasionally(he's still a puppy, albeit a 95 lb. puppy) but the difference in him has been like night and day. We will continue to use the techniques we learned from Jodi in dealing with issues as they arrive in the future. We would recommend Jodi to anyone who is looking for a trainer who specializes in "positive reinforcement ".
