Derek form BJ came out for the initial repair - the refrigerant was leaking form my 23 yr old AC. [Had the same problem last summer. Got a temporary fix by filling in the refrigerant (by another company).]. The technician was courteous, and knew what he was dealing with. Recommended changing the AC unit. Since it was a 23 yr old unit, I decided to change the AC as well as the furnace. Got 6 different quotes. BJs was the the best quote. Once I had finalized, the co-owner Barry came and discussed my needs and accommodated without any further increase in price (actually gave me discount). Did not have to wait for the installation - was done promptly by two great guys, Scott and Tony, who knew what they were doing, with minimum fuss. The new unit runs great and will definitely recommend BJ Heating and Cooling.

Donnie installed a ceiling fan for us and did a great job. It is hard to find someone who is willing to do small jobs, and to find someone who does it well and not overpriced is rare. Thanks Donnie!

Pete came to my home before I purchased it to inspect my systems, and do a carbon monoxide test. Everything was good. I have old units but working just fine. After purchasing my home he came back and cleaned my furnace thoroughly. The difference was amazing, and disgusting! Very fair price, and he explained how my furnace works and which way the filter goes in :) Will definitely use again.

Holders Heating & Air are the BEST company! Yesterday my furnace stopped working, mind you it was 11 degrees outside. I called them that morning and explained to them that I just gave birth to my son and he was only 3 weeks old and that my house was absolutely FREEZING! (I woke up to the house super cold and knew immediately something was wrong) they was at my house to the rescue an hour later and fixed the problem like a champ. I wish I knew the technicians name that came out, he was WONDERFUL and super nice! If I ever have any other problems I’ll definitely work through them! I recommend holders company to anyone! ☺️

Knowledgeable and professional techinicians. They installed duct work for me. It was neat and clean even though it’s in the basement. They fixed my furnace when no one else could fix it. It now works well and I no longer have issues. I would recommend this HVAC company to everyone I know.

Recently I had my furnace quit working during a cold winter day. I called Litsey and reached Julain which after discussing my issues he thought the best step would be to come check it out. He was able to diagnose the issue and fixed it the same day. A+

Frank did an excellent job installing our chandelier, kitchen faucet and front door hardware. He was courteous and professional and charged a very fair price. When a problem arose with the faucet installation (the old faucet was difficult to remove), Frank put in the extra work and time to get the job done. We are very happy with the quality of work and would definitely hire Frank again and recommend him to friends.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
