Updating a prior review. I initially left a low review as Jason scheduled time and did not call or text. Jason called with an apology and we rescheduled the work. Jason performed the initial project and a list of add-on projects I gave him after seeing his clean and professional work. No doubt, Jason takes pride in his work and the end result shows it. I am in the construction industry and am fairly meticulous with my house, thus cautious about anyone doing work in it. His craftsmanship is to be commended and pricing is more than reasonable. He will definitely be my 'go to' for any future electrical work. Incidentally, Jason installed 9 security cameras (some in very hard to access locations), a recessed light, relocated and grounded numerous outlets, repaired light switches, and other misc. tasks.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

Zach was easy to work with and accommodating of my slightly more-complicated-than-usual situation (an unlicensed electrician had done some work prior to him being involved under a General Contractor who I fired). Thiemba handled the situation gracefully and was very flexible. Much appreciated!

David was absolutely what an ideal work project should be. He was able to give a fast quote and even showed up early to knock the job out fast. Ran into some issues from my previous electrician and David was kind enough to take a look with no hesitation. I would recommend David, he will definitely be on contact list.

Good Knowledgable Electrician. Has 20+ years of experience and was more knowledgable than the Electricans hired by the City of New Orleans who came to do my home electrical inspection. Very interesting and funny to see Wayne (From Ace Electrical) teaching the City of New Orleans Electrical inspector about things in his field that the city inspector was not aware of how to do.

Kerry and his team did an excellent job with helping to fix a breaker box situation we had. He goes above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for an electrician. He also provides other contracting services as well, so I would definitely hire him for other jobs too.

I submitted a job to thumbtack for a much-needed electrician to install recessed lighting and hang my fan in my family room. After numerous responses and after reading all the reviews I decided to go with wiring plus because of all the positive reviews I read and experience he had and I’m glad I made that decision. Mitchell was absolutely phenomenal. After calling him we schedule an appointment for him to come out and give me an estimate I told him what I needed and he gave me his professional recommendations. He sent me a quote the same day and I thought it was very fair and we schedule the job. Later on He sent me pictures of all the materials and lighting I would need to install so we scheduled a date to meet at Lowe’s and pick up the material. After picking up the material he started that evening and was done the next day.He worked nonstop until the job was completed he made sure I was completely satisfied with his work before he left. If you are looking for an experienced licensed well qualified electrician look no further wiring plus is your answer. My husband and I are so happy we found him and can’t wait to start our kitchen lighting project .

I have 24 foot ceilings so when both of my lights in the living room went out at the same time I put out a request for help on thumbtack. Out of the five people who responded only one was actually a licensed and insured electrician and that was Martin Mitchell of 1st Action Electric. He was also the only one to give me an upfront quote (which he stood by). He and his assistant quickly diagnosed and fixed the problem with my lights and then inspected the rest of my lights and outlets. He went out of his way to help me take care of some other problems that he noticed (my fans and their remotes were not properly programmed and several lights with odd bulbs had burned out so he fixed the remotes and replaced all of my bulbs). I really appreciated the fact that he went out of his way to help me and to make sure that everything was taken care of properly. In the future I would happily hire Martin again.
