Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How do you move large pieces of furniture?

Moving large furniture can be done with help from the best movers in your area and careful planning. First, get an idea of how much the furniture weighs and how much each mover can manage. The next step is figuring out the path the furniture will take as it exits its point of origin and makes its way to its new home. Professional movers then use dollies, furniture protectors and personal safety gear for a safe, smooth move.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

We needed to move furniture from the second floor to the first floor and from the first floor to the second floor. Some of the pieces where large and unwieldy. We still have marks and holes from the furniture delivery company. Abba was a godsend. The workers where prompt, professional and well mannered. I would highly recommend them.

These guys were amazing. They showed up early and got right to work. They went above and beyond helping me move my furniture and even hanging my TV for me, which I didn’t include in the quote. They were happy to help me with absolutely everything and made moving day a breeze.

Showed up more than 30 minutes late, without a truck to move my furniture despite my asking specifically about this prior to hiring them. They left and said they’d return soon with a truck and never returned or even called. WARNING: If you need stuff moved, this isn’t the company to hire!!

Had a great experience with Family Movers. Brenton and his colleague picked up furniture from two different locations very quickly. They moved them up a flight of stairs with speed and without any damage to the items or the property. Super efficient and polite. Demi was very helpful through the scheduling process as well. Would absolutely use their services in the future.

Move It! By Bike completed what we thought was a nearly impossible task, of moving a large sofa through a narrow walkway above a fence. Not only did they do it swiftly and without any harm to the furniture, but with an amazing attitude. Their work is well-priced and the promptness of their response to our request exceeded our expectations. We would highly recommend them!

The movers were great! I've had some horrible moving experiences before, and this made me less leery of the experience. Nick coordinated everything and was very kind and considerate of us wanting to stay within budget. The guys who came on the moving day were brothers and also very nice, professional and friendly. They had all the necessary moving equipment, blankets, etc. The guys were very careful with our furniture and got everything done in exactly two hours. Would definitely recommend to anyone and hire again.

Kendrick and his team were awesome! I needed to reschedule the day/time of my move with short notice and he was both understanding and flexible. Moving day was seamless as I was able to turn everything completely over to them upon arrival. The furniture was broken down, wrapped, carried out and handled with care. I will definitely use these guys in the future! Thanks Again!

I hired Abba to move my furniture from one apartment to another. They did a fantastic job! Fernando and Jeffrey were fast, efficient, polite, professional, organized, and very competent. They completed the move in the time I was quoted, and the price was a great deal. They loaded my furniture very securely in the truck, and took care to make sure nothing was scratched or mishandled. The only reason I did not give them all 5 stars was because they were a couple hours late, due to their previous job running overtime. But at least Fernando called from the road a couple of times to let me know their status.

Used Henry Hauling this past weekend for a move from the Marigny to French Quarter. Given the short distance, truck pricing was fair and my movers - Lloyd and Damien - were incredibly efficient, careful, and collaborative. They moved everything from small boxes and plants to large heavy furniture pieces with professionalism and ease and were communicative about placement of each item as it went into the new place. I was also without some moving supplies and their padded blankets came in serious handy for fragile art and mirrors. Payment process was easy and all questions were answered promptly. 10/10 will hire for my next move!

The Abba team did a great job of moving a lot of heavy wood furniture down stairs and then upstairs into our new place. They were on time and worked hard the entire time - never even took a break! I was very happy with the job they did for us. The team was very personable and caring about the job they were doing and went out of their way to get everything placed correctly in the new house.I would recommend them to anyone for their moving needs.

I’m so grateful for the folks at Henry Hauling. They responded to my inquiry right away and were professional from my very first interaction with them. The two gentlemen that moved my furniture were so kind and helpful. They moved a heavy cabinet up a flight of stairs and it doesn’t have so much as a scratch on it! I was nervous about the amount of glass it. I found that they carefully wrapped every piece with care and paid attention to every detail. We’re so pleased with their fast, super efficient and quality service. So glad I hired Henry Hauling and will definitely utilize their services in the future. Highly recommend!

Three men were assigned to my job. After moving the first load of furniture from a storage unit the driver quit. He wasn’t feeling well (hangover) and wanted to go home. The other two gentlemen were working hard and wanted to complete the job. The owner of the company, Stephen, handled the problem professionally and courteously. He actually searched the local NOLA area and found a company that could finish the job that day. He even paid the $100 same day service fee to the local company to ensure my move was completed on scheduled date. He was amazing and went above and beyond to ensure I was satisfied and moved in on time. I would highly recommend Henry Haulers to anyone in the Baton Rouge area. The guys were hard working and very courteous. They made sure that delicate items were wrapped better and my belongings were not damaged. I would highly recommend them even though we had an unusual situation arise.

Mark Tomerlin's group came unprepared for Furniture moving and heavy lifting. The movers consisted of his brother, brother's wife and his 70 year old mother! They came with a Uhaul connected to an SUV. On day 2 they brought a truck. I also, requested to have a metal shed assembled. Because they had underestimated time & cost, I paid them $200 extra. However, they never completed the job. The shed was assembled incorrectly as well as incomplete. Screws that should have been used were all over the back yard. Boxes that were placed in my house until the shed was completed are yet inside. They had agreed to cut tree limbs to put the shed on a more level area. They worked for 3 days but never completed the job. Mark wanted to charge me an additional $250 to finish a job for which he had been paid. They are nice people but lack skills.
