Justin did a nice job replacing some exterior trim on my home. He was professional and patient, and willing to explain the specifics of the project. His work was excellent and the cost was reasonable. He paid particular attention to the small details. Justin was methodical and didn’t rush through the job like some contractors. Also, unlike many contractors, Justin is not afraid of climbing. I would highly recommend Justin to a friend for exterior trim repair or replacement.

I live off Cape and recently purchased a new home in Harwich. I was looking for an organized general contractor that I could have guide my various plumbing, painting, trim repair and other small projects. I needed to have a reliable, honest person that I could trust to be fair with pricing, and a timeline. I found all this in Ken and was so pleased. I had called around and contractors were not getting back to me and gave me ridiculous timelines of "eventually, when my schedule clears up". I want a skilled and driven general contractor such as Ken. I called and he had excellent testimonials, he lined up a great plumber, and painters and did repair work and carpentry for me and it was ALL DONE within a two week time period. I was blown away with his attention to detail, response time and quality of work. I strongly recommend you call Ken. Great guy who I will continue to use all the time moving forwards and he has a great reputable network of contractors. Terrific! Lisa Bradley

Mr. DeOliveira was very professional. He gave me a quote and stuck to it. He showed up on time and did a great job installing s cement pad in the front of my house. He came back the next day and finished the work. Finally he had to come back a week later and repair the job after a truck backed into the house and damaged the concrete. Mr. DeOliveira came right out promptly and fixed the damaged pad at no charge. I would highly recommend DeOliveira Construction. Tom Steeves, Bellingham, MA

Last week my husband and I contracted with Woody's Home Improvement to install a new railing in the entry of our raised ranch home and tile back splash in the kitchen. We honestly could not be happier. In the past we have had other contractors who always left a mess and never put finishing touches on jobs. However, Woody paid so much attention to every detail from start to finish. He offered us design ideas and options for both jobs. He thoroughly explained how each job would be done and estimated the time and dollar amount with great accuracy! =) We have an 8 month old in the house and he was so considerate about noise and cleaning up after each job so our little one didn't find any left over nails or pieces of wood. I truly believe you just can't find good contractors like Woody these days. He is the guy that will treat your home as if it were his own. He improved both the safety and value of our house with these two jobs. We wish we could rate him with 10 stars!

JP came to look at one project for us and ended up taking care of two! We had a few different contractors come through, but JP was the most professional and had the best vision for completing what we were trying to accomplish. Everything went perfectly according to plan and we couldn't be happier with the finished result. We discussed costs up front and everything came in on budget. Very responsive to any questions or concerns that came up and had perfect suggestions for when we didn't know which direction to go in. Very happy with everything and won't hesitate to call for any future projects!

Bill Brophy and crew were polite, professional and highly dependable. During the proposal process, his communications were respectful and timely. The proposal was thorough; and all of the work was completed in accordance with the written agreement. The work crew showed up on the job site [my home in Easton] precisely as scheduled; and diligently worked throughout the day. I can affirm that Bill Brophy is a man of his word; and his business, HomeKore Mfg Co of MA is a trustworthy firm. In addition to receiving compliments from my neighbors on the finished project; I am exceptionally pleased with the work that was done. And having the sense that I was dealing with a highly reliable contractor made it a stress-free experience for me.

OMG! Where do I start? Mike is the fastest worker ever, yet with an incredible attention to detail, culminating in one of the most beautiful floors I have ever seen. Fast yet thorough. Faster than the other contractors I had used in the past to lay 4 other floors. They would come in, play music, drag their feet, and go on their constant breaks! Mike was the opposite. He was beyond impressive. Focused. Didn't stop for a second even though he was free to. Took him 3 hours to do what others had taken days to finish. I was speechless when he was done. I am extremely grateful. Very professional and punctual. At my urging he came in earlier than the appointment which was really helpful. Incredible value for money. I would more than HIGHLY recommend Mike. You will find in him an incredibly skilled worker with a very pleasant disposition, that does a job faster than you can blink yet with such perfection. All we could say was WOW when he was done. A complete transformation of the room. Keep up the good work Mike. It is obvious that you love what you do and it shows in your work. The only regret I have is I never gave you the ice cold water I had for you. You had worked so hard. In and out that door at least 30 times to cut the tiles. Impressive. Sadly, you were gone so fast.

We had an unique experience with Wheldun, they went out of their way to provide us with comfort. We were trying to renovate the house with our limited budget with a hope to earn some summer rentals but we were no close to finish up on our project with the contractor we were working with. He did’t show up at work for couple of days plus we had not made any contract/agreement with him since he was referred by a close buddy. We thought we would atleast try to speed up the project if we could have someone else do the roof so, we contacted wheldun who promised to finish up work by the next day. The twist to the story is when we told the contractor with whom we were working with that we will simplify your work since he was one man army and have wheldun take care of roof, he got offended and said he will not work with us and told us to either cancel the deal with Wheldun or find someone else to work with. Here we are talking about a gutted house to the studs which basically needs everything. So, we reached back to wheldun with our issue, they not only provided us with additional discount based on our situation but also promised to provide us with resources to finish up rest of the work at the same rate which the contractor was charging us. For us what Nick and Jermy did was more than client and contractor relationship. They have out weighed our expectation and we cannot thank them more.

I hired Tony after many horrible experiences with contractors in the past and I truly have to say I've been blessed with the best contractor. Tony is reliable, very dependant, and reasonable. He works very hard and puts effort into his jobs. The pictures of my remodeled Living room speaks for his quality work. He did an excellent job building 2 in window benches in my living room He also remodeled my kitchen and built me a breakfast nook and now remodeling my bathroom. You will be very happy with Tonys work.

Bob “the builder” as my family and I refer to him is my go-to contractor for any work we need done. Bob built our entire 3000 sq ft house 14 years ago and we have had him back several times since for new projects. He is a quality builder, honest, reliable and reasonably priced. When we wanted an extra 2 car garage, we called Bob and he constructed an exterior 2 car garage for us, which turned out beautiful. He worked with us on the size, style and layout and made sure it complimented our main house structure. Years later, when wind storms caused a tree to fall through my garage, I called Bob again to make the repair. He did everything from fixing the soffit, siding and gutters to reshingling the roof. As always, he was professional, responsive and understanding as I worked through the cumbersome insurance company process. Recently, I hired Bob again to build a large elevated composite deck. His workmanship is sound and of high quality, his prices are reasonable and I highly recommend him to others. Bob has been building for a long time and he knows his stuff. He and his crew show up promptly every day (even when it’s 98 degrees out!) and I appreciate that they work hard and make consistent progress until the job is done. He communicates with me regularly to keep me informed on the project. I continue to be happy with Bob’s work and will have him back again when we have another project for him. Thank you Bob for doing great work whenever we need it.

When you are on a winter vacation and a pipe bursts in your home and you literally lose walls and ceilings and floors and are left with studs and a major insurance claim, the one contractor that you would want to have by your side is Keith Gilmore. Keith took hold of the situation and secured the required trades (his choices were in line with his own caliber of expertise) in order to get our home livable once again. It was a very long road but Keith was with us every step of the way. His workmanship is impeccable, he takes enormous pride in what he produces, is very innovative and is always open to ideas, both accepting and offering them. He is an honest and fair businessman and I have shared his name with family and neighbors. If I ever need to make any improvements and/or "fixes" he is the one and only contractor we will use. We have been enjoying our "new/old" home for awhile now and it still amazes me to live each day surrounded by this beautiful transformation.

I would recommend Pete to my family and friends. His work is meticulous and well thought out. Being in the real estate business, I am familiar with several contractors. Unlike a lot of them, if he can't make it that day, he contacts you. Pete is very trustworthy and reliable. He actually carved a fish in the shingles of my 1858 home when he shingled the back of the house. I love it and his work!

I was looking for a local carpenter in the area I had just moved to, and I used this website. I cannot be more pleased with the professionalism and skills, and finished product Dan has produced. He not only was on time with all his proposed deadlines and suggestions of the project for my home, he exceeded my expectations! I proudly show everyone the work that Dan has done, and I will always refer his name to anyone who is thinking of remodeling their homes. Dan is very personable and prompt, was never hard to talk to and was always responding to my questions whether through email or phone. The budget that he proposed was very reasonable and he stayed within that budget. Dan never tried to sell services that weren’t needed. His approach was straight forward. What is the customer’s request, and what is the budget of the customer? He then lays out a plan for material, labor and timeline. That’s it straight forward and it all came together with a great finished project. Again, if you’re looking for a remodeling contractor look no further for quality customer service and exceptional professionalism and fantastic finished product! It was a pleasure doing business with Dan! I would recommend him to anyone without hesitation. I’m already thinking of other projects that I will be calling him for! Once again thank you Dan for outstanding professionalism and unquestionable remodeling skills!

An old, ugly, wall mounted a/c unit in the living room had been haunting me since we bought the house and this project of removing it and filling in the wall was a project beyond what my husband can do. After some back and forth with a handful of different contractors, I decided to go with Jacques because his price was fair, he was able to start within a couple days, and his communication was excellent. The job he did was perfect! He was timely, courteous, efficient and, well, really good at what he does. He followed up on the small details day after day (sanding down the wall) to make sure the patch blended into the wall as if there was never an a/c unit sized hole in it. As my husband and I come across house projects that are just beyond our scope, I will definitely be calling Jacques again!

I recently worked with the Wilbur Group to patch holes in a downstairs bathroom ceiling and upstairs bathroom wall when a heating pipe sprung a leak. This was a project I needed done immediately and they were so responsive. They came out on a Saturday to do an estimate in order to commit having a team at my home Monday morning. The project was finished ahead of schedule. Milton, Kyle, and Gio were very responsive, direct, honest, and easy to work with. The team on site was respectful of my home; they were quiet (as I was working from home as well), provided updates on progress, took short breaks, and left their work space and the surrounding area (hallways, stairs, entryway) spotless upon leaving for the day. I cannot express how impressed I am with The Wilbur Group's professionalism. I would hire them again in a heartbeat! My only regret is I did not know about them sooner and had the opportunity to use them on earlier projects. I will definitely be working with them again. If I could envision my perfect experience working with a contractor, it would be everything I experience with The Wilbur Group!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
