Thank goodness for Remy! our furnace stopped working just before a big snowstorm and we were in trouble with a toddler and a new baby. Remy gave a very reasonable quote and above and beyond by driving through a blizzard to get to our house. He was quick and very pleasant. When he left, we had a nice toasty house.

Pasquale is so friendly and courteous. His crew is kind and respectful. They treated my home as if it were their own. (Even played with my dog while I was at work.) My new boiler is amazing and I bring friends to the basement to see the amazing work. Hands down recommend Pasquale. (Have already shared his number with my neighbor)

Mike Drohan was hired to fix a problem with a new (3 wk. old) central AC that the installation contractors failed to diagnose and fix despite me having patience, tolerating poor excuses and not returning my phone calls and texts over a 2 week period of time. Despite the very bad experience with other licensed HVAC contractors, I had to trust someone to "right the wrongs" of the installers and get my new central AC up and running the way it should. So...........I hired Mike. He showed up a day after we spoke when he said he would. After patiently listening to my experience and concerns, he quickly diagnosed the problem, made the required adjustments and repairs and had my new system up and running and operating the way it should....at a very fair and reasonable price. I found Mike to be responsive, a very good listener, patient and understanding, highly skilled and competent, friendly & engaging. I will hire him again in a heartbeat if need be and highly recommend him without reservation.

Easy to schedule - showed up on time and let me know when they were on their way. The pipe on my stove didn't fit the universal hose so he had to run out real quick to get a part but the installation itself was quick.

Our gas furnace is from 1970. Jonathan was very knowledgeable about the unit. He showed us how it works and what to do if we ever need to relight it. He cleaned everything and checked the air quality coming through the vents. He also wrote everything on the invoice so we could provide it to our insurance company. We are very happy with the service he provided and are looking into using him again for future projects.

I was frightened and apprehensive about the day my furnace would decide to go to the furnace Cemetery. Well that day happened on Friday October 13th. The furnace clearly malfunctioned and I was forced to replace it. On that very same day I use Thumbtack to locate a technician, in less than 72 hours I had been contacted by Mike at TopKnotch, had an appointment scheduled and had a brand new furnace and thermostat installed. It was absolutely painless, definitely affordable, and literally one of the most positive experiences I have ever had with a home repair.

Our experience with All Phases Mechanical has been excellent. On the first occasion we used APM, we lost heat during a cold snap in the middle of winter. We called in the morning and a technician arrived that afternoon and quickly determined that not only was our 20 year old furnace in need of expensive repairs (which a friend of ours in the construction industry validated), but continuing to run it would potentially result in a carbon monoxide hazard to my family. Carl gave us clear options and helped us understand benefits (rebates, no interest loans, etc.) that are available from the state to assist families in our predicament. We decided to move forward with a new furnace and Carl's team installed it the next day. On the second occasion, APM helped us our central air conditioning system. Again, Carl sent a technician who arrived promptly the same day, who determined that the air conditioning system was fine but it wasn't working properly due to faulty wiring. He quickly fixed it and was on his way - all at no charge. I can't say enough about All Phases Mechanical. If you're looking for a local company that cares about its customers (and understands that heating and cooking problems need to be addressed quickly), All Phase Mechanical is the company you should use.

I met Chris through a mutual friend who highly recommended him. I was hesitant at first because this person is a good friend of mine and these are the types of situations that tarnish friendships. Fortunately, this was not the case. I explained to Chris the issues I was having with the furnace and condenser to the best of my ability. He then proceeded to troubleshoot the system and explained what he was doing step by step. He was able to isolate the problems to a wiring issue. I'll say it again, a wiring issue. No parts to purchase, just simply wiring the system properly. He could've told me anything, he could've sold me anything but instead, just told me the truth. A very rare quality to find in a person nowadays. I would highly recommend Chris to anyone and you can be comfortable knowing that he'll be honest with you and the job will be done to your satisfaction.

My wife and I are first time home buyers facing our first major home repair, and Rick and Vicki were great throughout the process. Our old gas furnace needed to be replaced quickly, and Rick and Vicki were responsive and very patient as we asked lots of "first timer" questions. We installed a high efficiency "combi" unit, and Rick and his team were able to get the complete installation done over one weekend. Throughout the process, I thought that Rick and Vicki kept us very well informed about what was going on, and they were very helpful as we applied for a heat loan through MassSave and applied for our energy efficiency rebate. We had a little trouble scheduling the inspection with the city of Boston, but Rick clearly did his best to keep me informed about what was going on and pushed as much as he could to get the inspection taken care of quickly. I would definitely recommend Imbaro Mechanical.

Did not have any reviews on Thumbtack and they were new to the site but I am glad I didn't judge a book by its cover because I am more than happy with the job they did they showed up 10 minutes early and I spoke with the owner jarek and was surprised how much knowledge he had. We recently met James who quoted us and had ARS install a new boiler with central air conditioning system add on. We are very happy with the workmanship and professionalism. We had a small problem with the thermostat but one call to the service department and they had a tech out within two hours of our call who replaced the thermostat. All in all I appreciate the hard work of James and Mike and Eric. They all did their part to make this large purchase an easy pleasurable experience. Paul G - Middleborough

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

      • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
      • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
      • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
      • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
      • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
      • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
      • Cleaning and oiling the blower
      • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
      • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
      • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

      • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
        • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
      • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
      • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
      • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
