Thank goodness for Remy! our furnace stopped working just before a big snowstorm and we were in trouble with a toddler and a new baby. Remy gave a very reasonable quote and above and beyond by driving through a blizzard to get to our house. He was quick and very pleasant. When he left, we had a nice toasty house.

Mike was absolutely amazing ! I say that based on having an electrician and furnace professional try and figure out why our thermostat’s weren’t working. I explained the situation over the telephone and he said “No problem, I know what the issue is” Well- He sure did and fixed it. Mike was on time, professional and all around execptional. I highly recommend him !! A+++++++

Easy to schedule - showed up on time and let me know when they were on their way. The pipe on my stove didn't fit the universal hose so he had to run out real quick to get a part but the installation itself was quick.

These men were great, saved the day for me and my family last night at 3:30am. We lost heat and hot water when my new Combi boiler died. I called the company who installed it and they told me it would cost a ridiculous amount to come out in the middle of the night just to come to my home then more fees to make repairs. I called Vincent from an old estimate he gave us (so sorry I didn't have him install my boiler!!!), he came out in 35 minutes and worked on my unit for 15 minutes, got it running. This man KNOWS HIS STUFF!!! Knew just what to do and got right to it. Told me to go back to bed, he would let himself out and email the bill in the morning. Real nice guy, got worried about the bill, woke up to a warm house and a bill for $350 dollars. OMG!!! Shocked it wasn't something over $650 like the other guys said. So nice, will hire him for EVERYTHING from now on. I made a HUGE mistake going with a cheaper company just to save two hundred dollars on a 12K install. This man is red carpet all the way. Thank you SO much !!!! My family is in your debt.

I was impressed with Pat’s passion and enthusiasm for replacing my gas furnace in an affordable manner but with professional, specific attention to my house. When he and his crew showed up to do the work, they were thorough and kept me in the loop as the work progressed. They know their stuff. This is a young company that has earned my respect and I will be calling on them for future work.

I was frightened and apprehensive about the day my furnace would decide to go to the furnace Cemetery. Well that day happened on Friday October 13th. The furnace clearly malfunctioned and I was forced to replace it. On that very same day I use Thumbtack to locate a technician, in less than 72 hours I had been contacted by Mike at TopKnotch, had an appointment scheduled and had a brand new furnace and thermostat installed. It was absolutely painless, definitely affordable, and literally one of the most positive experiences I have ever had with a home repair.

Though we were dismayed to learn our new home's furnace was NOT 14yrs old but 1972, we were very happy with Jonathan's knowledge of this old system and reassurance we cam keep it going. He explained the pilot system and everything to us and even came right in testing CO levels all around. Will definitely use him in the future.

Great service. Kevin came out late on a Friday and later did replacement work on a Saturday. He got the bad part covered by warrenty. Furnace appears to have been properly diagnosed and now works great.

We recently met James who quoted us and had ARS install a new boiler with central air conditioning system add on. We are very happy with the workmanship and professionalism. We had a small problem with the thermostat but one call to the service department and they had a tech out within two hours of our call who replaced the thermostat. All in all I appreciate the hard work of James and Mike and Eric. They all did their part to make this large purchase an easy pleasurable experience. Paul G - Middleborough

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

    • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
    • The temperature cannot be regulated.
    • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
    • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
    • The thermostat isn’t working.
    • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
