Nicole was fantastic! I had been using the same accountant for years who passed away. Little did I know how uneducated I was! Nicole is super fast to respond and extremely informative. She had my taxes done within a week which was surprising because I am self employed and have a lot of details. I will use her going forward and definitely recommend her!

Have only had one meeting w Josh but can say already -he knows his stuff ! Just from eyeballing last years returns, he found an error from our past accountant and this error ( once he corrects it ) will be money coming to us. He was very personable, very easy to talk to and knew exactly what we needed!! Sooooo happy I found him-I feel more than confident in his abilities. I think he's great. The prices he quoted were more than reasonable. Honestly -don't think twice , just hire him!!

Bill did a great job. He gave me an estimate and then came right out to my house and did the taxes. He was quite the businessman. He knew just what to do and had everything done in about 15 minutes. I'll be looking forward to getting my money back from the state and federal returns. I would recommend him to anyone who needs tax returns done.

Couldn't have asked for a better experience. Rich is punctual, organized, comforting (which is important when dealing with such a stressful subject), and extremely professional. He looks for ways of going the extra mile, and does it well. Welcome to your new accountant.

So far it's been an outstanding experience. There is much to be done still to get our accounting and taxes on the straight and narrow, but Mr. Palmer definitely has the talent to get this taken care of for our business.

Al Amir is an excellent accountant. When I requested an appointment he returned my call the same day and took the time we needed to address all of my questions. He completed my taxes quickly and for a reasonable fee. I would recommend him highly.

I highly recommend Corrine Hisbany after meeting with her to sort out a years worth of data for my newly formed S-Corp. She met with both my Assistant and I which left us impressed with the knowledge, patience, responsiveness and advise she shared! My background is a small business owner in the Real Estate Industry and Quickbooks and accounting is new to me as is the entire process of bookkeeping. Reconcile? What is that and how do you know what goes where? Oh, yes - all the receipts how do you categorize and upload them? What I needed from a consultant was detailed knowledge to help me set up my business correctly, how to properly log and process each step. Corrine was suggested to me by a friend who utilized her skillset. I still met with other accountant types and for different reasons they didn't fit my needs correctly or I just did not feel as comfortable with them as I did with Corrine. She is the best, truly!

Linda was awesome! She met me on a beautiful Saturday when she could have been enjoying the New England sun. She took time to review and correct my current taxes and counseled me on next year's taxes and record keeping. She showed a genuine interest in me and not just my taxes. She is definitely going to be my accountant going forward. Thanks Linda!

We have a small retail business in the sports industry and were facing a government audit because the IRS suspected we had not been paying the full taxes for the last seven years. It was quite stressful as the IRS wanted to charge us more than $78,516 which would have been a complete nightmare to pay off. We contacted Legacy Tax Resolution to represent us and they prepared a really strong case. They went through our entire books in three days and calculated the exact tax liability which was significantly lower than what the tax authorities were trying to charge us. They helped prepare our filing returns and stayed with us every step of the way, until the clearance of the tax obligation. We are really grateful for all your help guys.

As I walked in the room for a meeting with SBA, Paul introduced himself to me. I knew right there that he was trustworthy and very knowledgeable about what my company needs were. I hired Paul as a business advisor and I am so grateful that I did. Paul has been helping Cleaning by Celma in different areas such as not having a business plan together or how to manage difficult customers. I highly recommend Paul to anyone that needs help with their business and accounting needs. Celma Silveira

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
