Soni worked on our home in Bangalore, India in 2010. She is currently renovating our home in Morgantown, West Virginia. She is outstanding and amazing. She is gifted with empathy and understands a customer's current and future requirements very well. Her great creative design ideas help customize the solution effectively. The task becomes challenging due to the fact that we are a funny and confused customer (who is not sure about many things). She connected the dots so well that it became magic delivered. She made it look so seamless for us, that It seemed like she knew exactly what we needed. When we moved to the USA in a very unplanned way, we had our home (still being built) in Bangalore, India. This was tremendously delayed by the builders due to a legal dispute. The builders had not provided many things that they promised. We were worried about our ability to rent it. That is when Soni (Daastann) took over and managed the interior design space planning and installation on our behalf. She is excellent at delivering ahead of the scheduled project time. She finished the unfinished nest beyond our expectations. She also got us connected with a wonderful caretaker. When the potential renters came over to see the place, they said the place brings inner happiness in their lives. Every renter has reflected this to us. The story does not stop here. Currently, Soni is renovating our beautiful home in Morgantown. We rely on her for all our design decisions and it is very easy to work with her. Soni (Daastann) - thank you for everything and for making us believe that Dream does come true. Wishing you the very best in your future projects. With your creativity and innovation, the world is certainly going to be a better place to live. Minakshi & AshutoshSee more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire the best general contractor in Boston?

Look for general contractors in Boston by going online, where you can compare their services and online reviews. Do they have a record of happy customers? Do they offer the services you need?

If so, check to make sure that they are current with their license, registration and insurance. You may be able to verify contractors’ licenses by searching online.

Your final step is to gather free estimates. Ask several general contractors in Boston to send you free price quotes so you can hire a contractor that fits within your budget.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
