Remy and his team were a life saver for us. We had work on an old oil heater and my husband and I were trying to have this work done in Boston and we live out of state. So we really had to rely on the thumbtack reviews and true to the other reviews Remy came through for us. This heating system had so many problems. We had a complete tuneup where many problems emerged. They diagnosed it and gave us a true estimate of what it would cost to fix it. This estimate did not change and they repaired it in a very timely manner. This included replacing a pipe which was leaking carbon monoxide into the basement. We were under a tight deadline to have it fixed and twice Remy worked late into the night to help us out. He was kind, courteous and professional. I would not hesitate to recommend him!

Mark installed a new gas furnace. He came out the very next day and finished the job. Hauled away the old furnace as well. All for a price that couldn't be beat. Will definitely recommend him. If you have any issue with heating or cooling he's your guy.

I'm so glad that Joel responded to my request for a plumber on Thumbtack. He was very curtious, prompt and thorough with all my concerns on the scope of work that needed to be done. He gave me a couple options and took it upon himself to check with the town building inspector to make sure we were going to be up to code. He also took care of bringing my water heater gas feed up to code. I couldn't be happier with the service!

Ed is a master of steam system. His service is reasonable priced. He loves his work and showed me an amazing vacuum steam system he recently installed. He earned my trust at the first visit since I believe in professional who are proud of their works. We replaced a century old oil boiler to gas. Ed explained the whole project and his plan to make the system efficient and quiet. The boiler and pipes looks neat and organized. The heating system runs quiet. We are very satisfied. I highly recommend Ed for the steam heating system installation and updates!!

I hired Bob for a leaking toilet. He was prompt and very flexible. I work full time and he was able to accommodate my schedule. Toilet was fixed. I called him again to install appliances. Again he was very flexible and changed his schedule to accommodate mine. Also I needed my heater fixed. He got it working, but then more air got in the line and the zone stopped working again. I called him and he came to my rescue the next day (which happened to be Sunday) and was able to fix the problem. I am grateful to have found someone so versatile, reliable, and flexible. I will be hiring him many more times. You won't be sorry to hire this company, but don' t keep him too busy because I need him! 😄

We hired Chris to complete a washer/gas dryer install in our basement. A lot of plumbers gave us the run around on the install and advised of solutions that would not meet our needs for our old house. Chris suggested an install that was in line with what we had wanted. He was able to complete the job at a lower cost than all other estimates. Chris showed up on a time and communicated any other issues along the way. We purchased our washer and dryer after the initial install and Chris was able to come back and complete the hook up for us. No more laundromat trips for us!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
