Paul really came through in the clutch. My fiancé and I had a bunch of people over on Friday and Saturday (Halloween/Nov 1st). Without Paul's help we would have had 4 large box's consuming our small studio apartment. I spoke with Paul on Thursday morning, and that night he put together a queen size IKEA bed with draws, very easily. He also helped put together a small kitchen cutting board table. He knew what he was doing, was very professional, and we will definitely tell others about his work. Thanks again Paul!!

I’m so glad I called Ernest! He was able to come by the same day that I called him and installed some pull-out drawers in my kitchen cabinets right away! The cabinets were so annoying to install (I had tried to do them myself previously), and he did them very efficiently and well! Great work, will definitely call him again.

Erik assembled our IKEA kitchen cabinets. I highly recommend him. His service was outstanding. He showed up on time and was responsive when the job became more complicated than we expected. He was efficient and friendly and the cabinets--now assembled--look great!

My partner and I had our small kitchen redone this past summer and I couldn't be more happy with the results. Deciding to undertake a complete renovation is a very daunting task. Shopping for the right crew, streamlining ideas, budgeting, etc... its a huge job even before the physical work begins. I feel fortunate that we decided to go with Eduardo and Boston Best Construction. From the designer to the construction team, I felt he had an amazing crew handling our project. He was prompt with all questions comments and concerns. He listened to our ideas and helped fill in gaps with his experience and expertise. His team was clean and respectful to our home. Each day before they began work they took measures to protect our property and at the end of every day they spent time cleaning up never leaving a mess. Every time I walk into the house and see the kitchen it makes me overwhelmingly happy. Its perfect!! As a chef the kitchen is my sanctuary, and Eduardo created a beautiful place for me to create dishes for my partner, friends, and family. If you want a job done very well by an amazing team look no further.

I was very happy with the work that Ray, Sean and their crew did with my kitchen remodel. Sean helped me come up with the plan for the kitchen and guided me along with way explaining every detail (and every expense) that came up. They were very professional and thorough (and nice to deal with). There were no surprises - except for the changes/additions that I made along the way. I love my kitchen!! I would highly recommend Handy and Some LLC for any remodeling needs.

I was a reluctant to hire off of Thumbtack. But I had a situation that I had to move fast on in a rental unit. I hired Daniel to redo a bathroom and kitchen and oversee related repairs work such as electrical and plumbing. Daniel and his small crew did excellent work and were always reliable and easy to work with. In my case I did not have a lot of time to manage every detail of the improvements. Daniel and his crew could handle unexpected problems and took great pride in their excellent craftsmanship. They did excellent carpentry, painting, and door hanging. My place went from looking totally beat up and tired to looking great. In short I would definitely recommend Daniel and his crew for any remodel or repair. I have already asked him to look at another job for me at a different location. I will be recommending Daniel without hesitation to anyone that asks for a referral. Anyone can feel free to contact me in private for a referral.

Russell did an excellent job on our kitchen, bathroom and front door. He went above and beyond to make sure that we were satisfied with the project. He has very good customer service and communication skills and is very easy to work with. Russell was ALWAYS on time, which we appreciated very much and also didn't mind the dogs being here while he worked. We will definitely be hiring him again for future projects.

I hired Kyle to install a kitchen faucet and he did a great job. He showed up exactly when he said he would and did exactly what he said he'd do for the price that we agreed upon. He was great to work with, and very accommodating. I'm lining up a whole list of projects for him and would happily hire him again!

This was the first time I had used the Thumbtack service and admittedly there was a level of nervousness. Dominic and his father were responsive, polite and very professional. While they were in my home, they worked quickly and efficiently and cleaned up as they went. I have two small children and they were courteous, friendly and even stopped to give me design ideas in the kitchen. I would highly recommend this team, there rates are fair and they do excellent work!

Ken did some tile work in my kitchen recently as well as some repairs to my doors and caulking our kitchen cabinets. From start to finish, Ken did a fantastic job! He communicated with me from the get-go, had a fair price, and was flexible with the times that he could come. He arrived on our agreed-upon time, performed the work as promised, and did a phenomenal job. He was done quickly and my wife and I were thrilled with his work. We will definitely be utilizing his services again in the future and I recommend him to anyone who needs any type of handyman work done.

My husband and I interviewed four different contractors for the remodeling of our kitchen. Gilson was very professional and easy to talk with. Where this was our first time having a big job done we didn't know what to expect. Gilson and his crew made the transition from gutting the kitchen to finishing the kitchen remodel as smooth as possible All of the people that work for him are exceptional and very professional. We can't say enough about their work ethic and professionalism. We highly recommend GF Construction.

January 27, 2015 Heidi helped us with designing and decorating my living room area and the upstairs wall space. This project encompassed purchasing products and furniture, supervising the installation, and making the finishing touches. Heidi is incredibly talented at ‘pulling the space together’ and executing on the home owners’ vision. She is incredibly thorough and creative- we had several art pieces that did not fit in standard frames and custom frames would have taken too long and expensive. She created borders with different color to create a dual border frames and the art and photos look amazing. Another thing that impressed me about Heidi is her ability to recommend various items at different price points and recommending where I should spend a little extra for quality vs. where I don’t have. The finished living room area and the walls look amazing and we highly recommend Heidi. We will definitely be making personal recommendations to our friends and family if and when they need this type of service. Kristie F.

True professionals are as good as gold! I put off remodeling my home for years because I dreaded the hassle of dealing with contractors and designers. When I finally committed to having the work done, I went through at least 8 General Contractors and designers to find the right fit. Each of these was either overly expensive, or had overbearing personalities, or sounded like used car salesmen.... Until I connected with Byron Cuhna and Co. Byron runs a family operated construction company that handles all size jobs. Byron came in and helped my wife and I work through the design of a large addition 26x24 on with a two car garage and bedrooms/bath above it, as well as another 15x15 family room on the opposite side of the house. Byron not only gave us great design ideas, he helped us add features that would be more cost effective and efficient. Byron and his son Eric were on the job from start to finish, and made the experience of living in "construction" much more bearable, and at a price affordable enough that I can still pay my children's college tuition next year. I highly recommend Byron Cuhna construction, I will update this review with final before and after pictures of my house. Carmelo

Mr Fix It was the contractor I decided to use to remodel my kitchen & bathroom. Mark was extremely helpful with the design and layout of my kitchen and bathroom. We discussed a price, and unless I changed something he did not change me a penny more than the agreed price. He was very helpful in every aspect of the remodel. Him and his subcontractors were very honest. The plumber, Electrian, tile person, and painters were very professional. They did everything I asked for and more. Every night the job left clean and organized. I can’t say enough nice things about Mark and his crews. They did a fantastic job.

This was one of the best Home Remodeling experiences we have ever had. We worked with Ely Jimenez of Del Cid Design and Construction. Ely does the best workmanship we have ever seen. He is wonderfully communicative and professional. He provided us with photographs of every single detail that he worked with. He was very flexible, patient, and creative. He transformed our old-fashioned bathroom into a beautiful, modern bathroom. He somehow fit a large, working washer and dryer into a closet. He is an excellent general contractor who works well with multiple sub-contractors. We 100% recommend Del Cid Design and Construction for any home remodeling task, no matter how big or small. There was many changes along the way that he graciously accommodated. I have already recommended him to friends and would not hesitate to use him for another project

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

we just purchased a new home and the home is quite dated in certain rooms. We are looking to do improvements in all of the major rooms, but over time. The kitchen and living room areas first, and slowly everything else. But we want it to be cohesive so we'd like to work with the same person for an extended period of time. We are mostly looking for ideas, paint options, flooring, etc, and typically will do a majority of the actual work ourselves. Ideas on furniture and lighting are always welcome but are of less of a priority at this point.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
