I originally connected with Eduardo Muniz in order to build a yoga studio. I found him an extremely congenial, responsive and knowledgeable person who had all the right resources and skills to do an excellent job. Meeting and planning with him was a pleasure, and he had a lot to offer in the form of ideas and suggestions. I did not, in the end, build the studio, primarily because of reconsideration of my family’s financial outlook and our best way forward. However, I was sufficiently impressed by Eduardo that I am planning to use his services for some home repairs and renovations I’ll be doing. Once those are done I’ll be able to leave a review regarding how the work turned out.

Joe responded quickly, was completely professional and easy to work with. I will absolutely call Joe again if I need this kind of carpentry/repair house job done. Joe and his assistant (sorry can't recall name) replaced an aluminum siding piece that had blown off and did some gutter repair - not "big" jobs but ones that required professionals in my opinion. Glad to hear of Joe through Thumbtack.

He was a little late arriving from what we agreed, but he did notify me of his delay before he was actually expected. He did pretty much what I asked, and he worked steady at completing it. He was very courteous, and in the end did a good job. I was repairing a drywall and I had wanted it to be patched with just one piece of drywall to minimize the seams and sanding I am expecting to do. He used 3 pieces, but in the end it looks like it's OK. So yes, I think Good to borderline Excellent is a fair assessment.

I had a pleasure of hiring Russell for home floor repairing job (engineered hard wood). I would highly recommend Russell for such carpentry work. Based on this fantastic experience, I would consider him for other home repair/installation jobs (gutters, storm door, etc). I had a buckled (peaked) floor due to the seller/installer not leaving enough gaps at the edges to account for expansion of hard wood during summer. I had about 6 estimates, and by far, his pricing was the most reasonable. While most people charged per job, Russell quoted me an hourly rate. Some more reasonable than others. A few were flat out reluctant to do the job, due to its small size (maybe thought it was less profitable) despite the full day needed for its completion. By giving me a ridiculous quote (similar pricing to a new floor installation), they implied they didn't want to work. The job required removing the moldings from the impacted walls, removing all of tiles, then laying them again from the problematic area. He sticks to the quote and to his estimated time. He has a good pace and doesn't linger to buy time. Also, I found him to be very personable. The job was done to the utmost satisfaction. If you want an honest, hard working man to look after your home repair jobs, this would be the guy.

I hired HD construction to repair my deck and install trim and lattice around the perimeter. Heraldo was extremely responsive and was able to schedule me in shortly after he reviewed and quoted the job. The overall result was great and I was very happy with the work. I would definitely recommend HD construction and would hire again for future projects.

Although it was a small tile repair job, Daniel treated it as if it was a large job. He was courteous and quick to respond to the request for an estimate. He gave a written estimate and include the timeline. Daniel kept in communication and his brother, Jaime, who did the tile repair was on time and left the job site as clean as it was when he began. Jaime and his assistant were pleasant and as noted neat and efficient. It was a pleasure to do business with the Ortega Brothers. I would recommend them, based on the work done here. It is often hard to find someone to do small jobs but, as Daniel said, small jobs need to be done too.

My initial contact with Northeast Construction was great, they sent a very professional response and sent out some one (Ian?) the next day to make the repairs to walls and touch it up. Brandon also came out to check on the job and also provided a estimate on some bathroom work we would like to do. After speaking with him we could tell he has extensive experience and knows what he is talking about. We had no idea we couldn't install Sheetrock of any type in a shower behind tile, we had numerous contractors say that was perfectly fine and the norm, after researching its is not the norm. We look forward to working with them on our bathroom job and future projects.

XCC did a perfect job installing my hardwood floors in two large rooms. There were lots of complications with rooms being out of square, un-level surface around the fireplace due to mortar, and border patterns with different wood, and insets. All of it came out perfectly and with very little wood waste (way less than other contractors would have done). Xavier and his crew also did a great job replacing my damaged sub-floors throughout the entire house - a task that no other contractors were willing to take on. Xavier and his crew always worked hard and are very pleasant to be around. They have wide knowledge and skill sets and are willing and able to do anything you might need. No lazy-bones or burn-outs in this crew!

Russ and his team was a pleasure to work with. He was very responsive to my inquiry (leveling my floors for a floating wood installation) and even adjusted his projects to fit my tight timeframe. He provided tips for other renovations we are doing throughout the house and even allowed up to borrow tools needed to do so. we have worked with several contractors over the last few weeks and Russ by far was the more professional.

This father-son time, Byron and his son Eric, helped me out in a time-crunch jam. They responded to my Thumbtack RFP within an hour of my posting it. They met with me at my home the very next day to go over the job in detail. They emailed me a bid promptly and stayed in communication with me about the job as it progressed. They did BEAUTIFUL work, both on detailed repair carpentry in several places on my home's exterior and completed the exterior paint job.

This was one of the best Home Remodeling experiences we have ever had. We worked with Ely Jimenez of Del Cid Design and Construction. Ely does the best workmanship we have ever seen. He is wonderfully communicative and professional. He provided us with photographs of every single detail that he worked with. He was very flexible, patient, and creative. He transformed our old-fashioned bathroom into a beautiful, modern bathroom. He somehow fit a large, working washer and dryer into a closet. He is an excellent general contractor who works well with multiple sub-contractors. We 100% recommend Del Cid Design and Construction for any home remodeling task, no matter how big or small. I would give LMD Design and Construction more than 5 stars if I could. My husband and I recently purchased a home in Boston Metro and we wanted to have the downstairs painted before we moved in which meant that we needed someone who could meet the specific and short time frame. Lori, the owner of LMD Design and Construction, was one of several contractors who provided estimates. The job itself consisted of painting the kitchen, dining room, and living room walls, painting all the trim (around all the windows, baseboards, and doors), painting all the interior doors, installing crown molding and hanging wallpaper on one wall. Painting the trim was quite the task because their were cracks and gaps, unevenly applied brown stain, and paint from the walls that dripped onto the unprotected baseboards. They were able to expertly paint and repair all of the problematic trim. I hired LMD for several reasons and I am so very happy that I did. Lori was incredibly personable, honest, she gave me a very fair quote, and could meet the timeline without sacrificing quality. I was very impressed by her extensive knowledge, valuable advice, and a trustworthiness that was immediately palpable. She stood out not only from the other contractors, but from contractors in general. During the entire process she was available to answer my questions or give advice and always responded in a timely manner. For me, it is of the utmost importance that I can trust and truly rely on people with whom I do business - especially those who come into my home. Lori and her employees proved very trustworthy, punctual, and apt. I was actually shocked by the high quality and attention to detail - they even went beyond what was listed in the original quote when I changed my mind TWICE about which wallpaper I wanted hung. Adam, who works for Lori and did the painting and wallpaper installation, is an expert painter who can paint a stunning mural by hand or paint letters or phrases with expert precision - he is a true artist. Like Lori, who has a background in interior design, Adam also has an excellent eye for design and helped us to find the perfect, and final, wallpaper- which by the way is GORGEOUS, and he even went out of his way to meet us at a design store where the wallpaper samples were located. We plan to use LMD for several projects of different scales down the road. To be clear, LMD does do small jobs like mine, but they can and have remodeled entire houses, and built homes from foundation to completion. Based on other reviews and references, my own experiences of working with various contractors over the past 15 yrs, and most importantly my experience as a LMD client, I can say without a doubt that this company is one of a VERY FEW who possess the rare qualities of dexterity, expertise and trustworthiness that set them apart from other companies. Metaphorically speaking, you could compare LMD to a restaurant that has, for instance, 100 + menu items that vary from sushi to lasagna; are all reasonably priced, consist only of high quality ingredients, are expertly prepared never fluctuating in consistency, and promptly arrive at your table.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
