Lillian G. says, "Rick Frank was my Aqua Yoga teacher for several years at the pool of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, Boston, where he brought his training in Yoga and in Occupational Therapy to his students. His students took his class primarily because they needed help with their medical problems, which was my reason for seeking him out. Accessible and Adaptive Yoga allow those with physical limitations to access the therapeutic benefits of Yoga practice. The instructor observes the limitations of his students and then adjusts the Yoga exercise to accommodate to the student’s ability. Because each student presents with differing sets of physical problems, adjustments to the standard Yoga form and practice are made in order to accommodate them, allowing the student to benefit from the other therapeutic values that Yoga provides. I have severe scoliosis and herniated discs that affect my posture and concomitant pain that can then affect one’s perspective, so I joined Rick’s class to prevent the [forward] tumble. It worked beautifully: I was standing straighter, building up muscles to do my daily routines and was happier in general. And it was so much fun to interact with Rick and his warm and gentle humor, which everyone loved, while he expertly guided us through contortions that still surprise us. His quiet patience while we tried to figure out which foot should be where, was appreciated, too. After the class’ “formal” pool instruction, Rick put on soft meditation music and we floated on water floaters with our eyes closed, meditating, or clearing our mind, which was an exceptional experience to most of us. It was perfect and brought us peace and restored spirits. Everyone loved it and we were reluctant to leave the pool because we felt so well there. When the pandemic struck and the pool had to close, the gains that I and others had made collapsed and we miss them so. Several of our classmates keep in touch and we keep asking, “Have you heard when the pool is going to reopen?” [How hard would it be for 3M to invent a waterproof face mask, something like a scuba tube with a filter on top, I wonder?] My recommendation is that if you have a chance to do yoga with Rick Frank, take it."See more
