How hard is it to learn to play the cello?

Taking cello lessons can be a rewarding experience for students young and old. The rich sound of the cello is well-loved in classical music and is found in all genres of contemporary music from modern folk to rock. As with any instrument, how hard it is to learn to play cello depends on the practice and dedication you put into it. It’s true that some people are naturally more adept at learning instruments than others, but with lessons and a daily commitment, you too can learn to play the cello.

Cello lessons can be a smart investment, especially for new players. Even professional cellists benefit greatly from ongoing training, but for those new to cello it’s especially important for forming a strong foundation for playing. From the proper posture to understanding finger positions, regular cello lessons give you a benchmark to measure your daily practice against. With a professional cello teacher guiding you, the sky’s the limit.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

How many singing lessons do I need?

It depends on what you’re hoping to accomplish with your singing lessons. Consult a highly rated vocal instructor to determine how many lessons you should take — and how often you should take them.

Do singing lessons actually work?

What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Mr Bertrand is a brilliant guitar teacher who not only teaches guitar techniques but also conveys ideas to approach music itself. The little jamming session I always have with him is something that I learn a lot from.

Evan's expertise on the guitar paired with his ability to quickly connect with people's learning styles makes him an excellent teacher. As someone with musical experience but relatively new to guitar, I have been genuinely impressed with how Evan is able to enrich both my education in music theory and guitar playing at the same time. My lessons have been engaging and informative and I always look forward to the next one.

Junling is my second piano teacher and I have been taken piano lessons with her for around a year now. She is definitely very knowledgable in music and a great virtuoso pianist. I like how she tailored the class based on the student's music level and provide very constructive suggestions on the technical pieces and musical pieces to work on. She is capable of capturing every subtle details in music pieces and present you with a perfect demo. She is fun to talk to and easy to make friend with. Keyhan is an excellent teacher. His lessons are varied and fun. He is patient, while at the same time holding his students to high standards. Keyhan's lessons strike a great balance between the fundamentals --theory and technique -- and creativity and musicality. My son has made great progress with him and loves what he is learning.

My first impressions of Nicole were that she is very sweet and at ease working with people. She did a great job making me feel comfortable and relaxed before the lesson started. She is a very talented singer and does a good job explaining techniques to students. Overall I think she has a bright future in music ahead of her, either as a performer or as a teacher.

I am not new in the world of singing-have been for many years and have taken lessons from other teachers. I have to say Bulent has been, by far, one of the best! His techniques, breathing, reading music, scales, etc., are spot on. I would highly recommend Bulent, and have, to any who are interested in voice lessons with a highly trained, learned, singer.

I cannot recommend Bradly enough! Honestly, I have been so happy with our lessons individual guitar lessons and my own progress. Last winter when I decided to start guitar lessons as a total beginner, and I found Bradly on Thumbtack and I have been SO impressed with his teaching style, patience, knowledge, professionalism, and super high quality instruction. I can't believe how many songs I have learned how to play already and I'm even reading music! He is extremely responsive when I have any questions and he is such a wonderful, supportive teacher. He very effectively uses technology to share music sheets, videos, notes, and calendar appointments that makes everything a breeze. I wish I could give more than 5 stars; he has been so great. If you are looking for an awesome guitar teacher who will meet you where you are at and support you to reach your goals, and who will always be kind and professional, Bradly is your guy!!

Three years ago when I first walked into Bulent’s voice studio as a shy thirteen year old, I had no idea that I would develop a passion for singing. My only previous experience had been small school choirs and singing in the car. When the lesson began, I expected to be bombarded by a variety of vocal warm-ups that I would need to memorize immediately. Instead, Bulent took a blank sheet of paper, and drew the respiratory system—explaining how the larynx, lungs, diaphragm and other components worked together to create music. I was blown away as I suddenly began to understand breathing, something I do constantly. By using the breath technique that Bulent taught me, I found myself also breathing easier in everyday life. Once I understood the basics, I was able to move on to repertoire. With Bulent, I have learned many different genres including, classical, opera, musical theater, pop, and many more. I was able to choose music from the radio that was easy to learn, but Bulent made sure my vocal training continued with classical songs that are the pillars of music education. My varied repertoire included singing in more than four languages. When I had a better understanding of singing and fundamentals, Bulent introduced Concone, a sight singing book, and Vaccai, a book based on Italian singing methods. When combined with the ear training and solfeggio we’d been doing since my first lesson, I’ve been able to get a better understanding of what it takes to sing with skill. While advancing my musical education, Bulent also prepared me for various auditions for countless musicals, plays, and singing groups. Without Bulent I could not be a director of my a capella group or perform in various productions. Bulent creates a fun and safe atmosphere where I feel comfortable asking him to do new things. I enjoy our laughs about mistakes that I make or jokes he makes. I am never scared to ask Bulent for help on anything music related whether it pertains to our lesson or not, because I know how caring he is. Bulent is an excellent teacher who has a vast amount of knowledge which he shares with me every lesson. From teaching me how to breathe correctly, to making sure my voice is healthy, Bulent cares deeply for every one of his students. Bulent has helped me grow into a confident singer and I cannot thank him enough.
