John is a professional handyman with many talents. He installed windows, porch railing, vinyl siding, painted trim and put up with my constant changes to the work needing to be done. Great attention to detail, courteous to my tenants and completed the work in a timely manner at a great price! Already using him on another project! Thanks John!

My father-in-law had created some major holes in the wall after attempting to install curtain rod holders around a couple of windows in my daughter's room. Not only was Jeff able to rejigger my brand new curtain rod holders, that I thought were unsalvageable, but he used the proper tools and equipment to install them professionally. Can't even tell there was patchwork done. Didn't even need to repaint over the patchwork. Jeff used the necessary (heavy duty materials) and did an exceptional job. He supplied all of the materials and equipment and is extremely reasonable/fair with his pricing. He was very diligent, professional, and friendly! I am extremely pleased with the excellent work that Jeff has done!

I needed someone to remove a bunch of broken items like TV's, a/c's, windows, etc. The quote was good and we agreed on a price. Joe arrived on time ready to go. He was easy to talk to and was gone in a few minutes. He would have been gone sooner, but he helped out my elderly neighbor who came out and asked if he would take her door.

I have given Sam progressively more difficult jobs over the last year and have been happy with the quality of his work, his great attitude, professionalism, artistic sense and fair price. Work he has done for me includes installing new basement windows with cement, installing stucco on my sunporch and garage, and installing a new driveway and patio with red clay brick. Sam often sends texts to me with pictures of his work. He is proud of his work and I am a happy homeowner who is getting compliments from the neighbors. Nathan

Joe and his assistant Frank did a great job on replacing two window casings and sills at my mom's home. They arrived on time as well, which I find isn't always the case with contractors. When it came time to reinstall the storm windows they ran into a technicality but they knew how to troubleshoot the issue in order to make the correction. I think anyone who hires Joe & Frank to do carpentry work will be 100% satisfied!

Mark installed new windows in my 1850 home, and we had to coordinate with a moving company so that they were there at exactly the same time. Mark was easy to work with, and responsive to the schedule changes, and installed my windows beautifully and at a reasonable price, I wiuld highly recommend his company!

Bob built us a unique closet in a tight spot, between a doorway and a window in an old house with crooked walls, ceilings and floors. The finished closet looks great! We didn't have a design for him to work with, but he's a good communicator and listened to our needs for the layout. He added matching trim around the base on the inside, and he even moved a closet rod up without complaining after we changed our minds about the position. He installed it quickly and cleaned up well! I feel the need to say something negative so I don't sound like a robot, so the only minor issue was a few small paint splotches in the surrounding area.

I would like to say that Jeff is a very professional, informed, and helpful person. I called him to help me with some broken windows. He called and said he would like to help me, but unfortunately he could not because his insurance would not cover working in condos. But then he called back and said he would come to my house and look at the windows and let me know what was needed, which he did. He even went so far to call around and see where the parts could be purchased. This was very considerate and I would highly recommend him to anyone needing help with their windows or any other handiman work.

We hired Stan and his team to replace 9 tricky windows in our home and to replace our front porch deck that was in a state of disrepair. In all, the professionalism and quality was beyond expectation. The pricing was fair and the extra measures Stan and his team took was icing on the cake. Stan took the time to reach out to me outside of "office hours" to ensure I knew what was happening and provide insight to choices that needed to be made. We are already starting a list of projects we hope he can help us with in the future. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

3 years ago I needed to replace my roof. I also had two skylights I knew needed to be replaced but was always so worried that if I replaced them I would have issues. A friend recommended I call Budget Exteriors, I am so glad I did. When I met Lou and showed him my issues he was very accommodating to my concerns. Lou is very knowledgeable about his products and the process of work that needs to take place ~ I was very comfortable working with him. (I did get other quotes to see if he was fair and he absolutely was.) Going on 4 years and my roof still looks great and my skylights are issue free. So this summer when I wanted to replace all the windows in my house. I called Budget Exteriors for the job. Lou again explained what would be my best options and I was impressed again. His communication with me through out the job was a pleasant add. He seems genuinely concerned for the homeowner to have a good experience. My favorite is my front bay window. My previous front window was flush to the house. Budget constructed my new bowed bay window and it is gorgeous! I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
