You Can’t Go Wrong With Such Great Work As a retiree, living on a fixed income and not being a professional in the building/construction trades it’s always a bit nerve-racking when faced with multiple issues to maintain your home investment. The Colonial portion of the homestead was built in 1750 and the addition is an authentic Post-N-Beam Revival making this a valuable property historically and culturally. With this type of property, quality cannot be compromised! I had six immediate responses to my request for roofing repairs initially. So, let’s talk about the ONE that got the job(s). L&K Construction gets five stars from me in every category. Wayne returned my initial call very quick. He showed up at my residence, surveyed the repair work needed and then promptly provided the explanation of the scope of the repairs. He also provided an estimate of the proposed job in a very professional manner. Now here is where the differences began to surface that separate the field. Wayne is very knowledgeable on all phases of construction from demo and rehab to new construction. As a roofer, Wayne was tasked with cleaning up shabby work of previous roofers. Previous work that was done poorly causing leakage and potentially costly damages to not only the exterior but the interior of the property. I was more than pleased with his work on this task and immediately expanded the scope of work and employed him with additional projects – cedar roofing and siding repairs. If your doing cedar you need to know what your doing! He was back on site within a few days! Having been in the property business I understood the value of a firm like L&K Construction managed by the generational experience of Wayne Lupien. Wayne was honest and candid in his explanations and his estimates. The jobs were excellent! The cleanup was excellent with no walk around problems. The price was fair and reasonable. As a matter of fact, L&K Construction will be coming back to do more work with not only roofing and siding but with masonary work. You can bet I will be informing my friends and acquaintances of the professional expertise of L&K Construction. So, if you are looking for professional work at a reasonable price with no sacrifice on quality to get that level of cost-to-benefit ratio, call Wayne at L&K Construction - you’ll be glad you did!

What a great experience working with Jennifer Koehler! Professionalism has returned to the service industry here. Prompt replies with impeccable attention to detail. Her work is always beautiful because she listens & makes designing fun even for those of us who are design "challenged". First project was nursery in 2007 (gorgeous), second project was our MBR in 2009 (gorgeous). Wouldn't consider working with anyone else to help with our current project to plan, design & decorate our brand new home.

I hired Becky at Wysteria Design to help me in the design of my new eye care facility, Evision Eyecare. Becky was extremely helpful and went above and beyond throughout the entire project from start to finish. The office turned out amazing. I get compliments on the look of the office all the time. I would highly recommend Becky and Wysteria Design for any of your upcoming projects. I am adding additional space to my facility in the coming months and have already contacted Becky to help with the design of the new space.

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Claire to photograph many of her commercial and residential projects. I can tell you from first hand experience that Claire is uniquely talented in both construction management and interior design. That means she is a valuable resource for clients to bring on board as early as the pre-construction phase as well as for the final interior design finishes. She brings her clients a comprehensive vision when she walks into a space from building it to decorating it. While on site with Claire and her clients, it is obvious from their interaction how much they enjoy Claire and their new space. And I enjoy photographing her work and working with her to visually communicate "Claire's Perspective".

Denyne is my Holistic Interior Designer. I have used her for a few projects/refreshes over the past few years and have been thrilled with the changes we've made. She incorporates the Art of Feng Shui into my space. This time, we focused on picking paint colors and textiles that reflected me, were warm and worked in my loft which I have named The Beach Shack

Vicki is the best of the best. We have utilized interior designers before, all with good results, but Vicki is in a class by herself. Her personality, tireless worth ethic, eye for detail, wonderful sense of taste, and her commitment to complete the project that matches your vision to the highest of expectations are all core values of both her personal and professional principles. We asked Kelly to design our new master suite that is a massive 22x26 with a challenging 2 entrances , Kelly did a fantasy job of listening to what we wanted out of that space and delivered us 4 options to choose from. We took those options and are now able to move forward and we would never have been able to do it without her expertise! Thanks Kelly !!

I was more than halfway there with my paint, lighting, furniture, and accessories but my space didn’t feel quite “finished” –I needed a final step and I knew I couldn’t accomplish what I needed to by myself so I contacted Ivory and Bone for a consultation. My job wasn’t a big one, but Katie and E were so responsive and engaged and genuinely enthusiastic that I felt like their only client! Not only did they make very spot-on and thorough concept boards for me, they were absolutely lovely and professional to work with. I also recommend following their blog for more ideas and just for fun!

What’s not to love! So professional, loves what she does which yu can clearly see, has an eye for design, and also very knowledgeable. I had no idea that there were so many options when it came to window treatments. Styles, designs, colors! She guided me through the whole process, which was very helpful. She brought over samples so I could actually see and feel what I’d be purchasing which is huge because I like to know what I’m going to get. And install, she does that too! I am sooo happy and so pleased with Judee and would definitely recommend her.

Avery is a truly talented designer! She worked on several projects in our 110 year old home. By rearranging our existing furniture on the first floor, she markedly improved the flow and aesthetics of the room, while keeping costs low. In our third floor addition, Avery expertly designed the lighting plan, including overhead track lights, sconces, and a beautiful antique chandelier. By having the right type and style of lighting in the right places, she gave the room just the right ambience. Even more impressive than Avery's talent is her easy nature and likability. We highly recommend her for your interior design needs.

John Maciejowski is the ultimate, talented professional. We recently gutted and remodeled both a master and guest bathroom. John created the look we were going for and the bathrooms came out great. He listened to what we wanted, took us on store and factory tours to pick out the marble, granite, tile, fixtures, vanities and paint colors. Everything fits together so perfectly. We love the outcome. John is very detailed and follows through on everything. You would be wise to pick John for your next remodeling or refurbishing project. We have worked with John 2 other times to refurbish our living room and bedrooms. The furniture, artwork and overall color schemes have always come out first rate!!

Emily is a godsend! I wanted to upgrade little things in my living room but didn't know what would look best. I followed Healy Interiors on Instagram and reached out to see if she would provide a remote consultation. (I live on the west coast.) Emily was incredibly helpful and generous. She listened to what I was looking for, provided lots of options and advice--she even found some amazing items on sale! This room used to bum me out, but now I'm excited about redesigning it! Emily will definitely be my go-to in the future for any and all design.

We had a fantastic experience working with Rebecca after moving into our forever home. As everyone knows, it's completing overwhelming to unpack and never mind trying to choose how to decorate your home when you lack all artistic and design skills. Rebecca helped understand our tastes and made sure the design concepts were beautiful as they were functional. She completed the project on time and within budget, despite our crazy lives and schedules. I would highly recommend anyone looking for an interior designer who bring creativity but designs that fits your personality.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
