I initially hired Bob to install a bathroom exhaust fan. While he was there I ended having him also install 2 medicine cabinets with lights on top and repair a doorbell that wasn’t working. He installed and fixed everything and I’m quite happy with his work. I plan to continue using Bob for future electrical work.

I have had many bad experiences with plumbers, this was not one! Mark did everything he promised in a professional, efficient and courteous manner. He removed and replaced a water heater that was in a very difficult spot on the second floor of my home, he took the old rotted water heater out with out one bit of mess or disruption to my home. I will not hesitate to use Mark again and I recommend him highly.

Lou did an amazing job on our bathroom and finished attic. He was quick to respond, and started immediately. The upstairs attic especially was not an easy task and they did a great job. (I'm so glad I didn't have to do it!) Will definitely remember him when I'm needing more work again. :)

Stella turned an existing upstairs bed room into a bathroom. Work was done well overall, and it was a pleasure working with Erik. I especially appreciate his ability to reply to e-mails and texts within minutes, something that most other contractors I vetted for the job couldn't manage in days, or in some cases, not a all. Stella was very helpful in the planning process, and managed all the permitting/inspection work with ease. I would definitely recommend them.

I just had my kitchen and bathroom fully gutted and remodeled by BBC. I'm very happy with the outcome of it all, and would definitely hire Eduardo for my next project or recommend to anyone in need of a great contractor! He was always very fast to answer any of my doubts. His crew has an amazing work ethic. They treated my house with care and respect. Everything from the materials they used to the appliances I bought was kept organized. The job site and my house was kept clean every work day. Eduardo was able to complete the project under the deadline. Now I have a beautiful kitchen and a stunning bathroom. I am super satisfied! Thank you Eduardo!

We have now used Troy for several projects which include restoration, tiling of floors, painting inside walls, and painting exterior of house. In each case we were well pleased with his work and impressed both with his handling of the projects and their end results. For the first project (painting the interior walls), Troy took the extra effort to prep the walls by removing excess wall paper and backing, patched and skim coated. After painting the walls they looked beautiful - smooth, clean lines, damage spots no longer visible. The exterior paint job was also done well. Again, Troy took the time to prepare the surfaces - scraping shingles and trim work, fixing / repairing shingles, finding the right primer (due to the poor condition of the shingles and old peeling paint). And again, with a coat of paint and clean lines around the trim the house looks vibrant - the neighbors loved it and commented on the good job he did. Troy also tiled the bathroom and kitchen floors which look great. The projects were performed in a timely manner, the areas kept clean as Troy didn't just do a job but took ownership and managed the projects. Once Troy took the project I could relax knowing that any issues that arose would be handled, I would be kept informed with updates and timeframes, and in the end impressed.

Russell did an excellent job on our kitchen, bathroom and front door. He went above and beyond to make sure that we were satisfied with the project. He has very good customer service and communication skills and is very easy to work with. Russell was ALWAYS on time, which we appreciated very much and also didn't mind the dogs being here while he worked. We will definitely be hiring him again for future projects.

My initial contact with Northeast Construction was great, they sent a very professional response and sent out some one (Ian?) the next day to make the repairs to walls and touch it up. Brandon also came out to check on the job and also provided a estimate on some bathroom work we would like to do. After speaking with him we could tell he has extensive experience and knows what he is talking about. We had no idea we couldn't install Sheetrock of any type in a shower behind tile, we had numerous contractors say that was perfectly fine and the norm, after researching its is not the norm. We look forward to working with them on our bathroom job and future projects.

CSB plumbing installed a new sink, drain, and oven. Chris was quick to respond to all my texts and calls. He was incredibly knowledgeable and able to answer all my questions. My husband and I were THRILLED with his work. He could have overcharged us and done more work and did not. This guy is awesome. He is our forever plumber. I will be giving my tenants his number to call him. I HIGHLY recommend him. I had gone through two plumbers prior and nightmare experiences. I have a weight lifted off my chest now that I met him.

We were referred to R&R Plumbing and Heating from one of my husbands co-workers. We called Rob on Monday and informed him of a leaky toilet and a shower faucet that would not stop leaking and we new the whole get up had to be replaced. Rob came out the next day. Before coming he asked me to send photos of the shower surroundings so he could make sure he had everything he needed and that the fixtures I had already picked out would work. Of course with an older house you know things aren’t as easy a fix as one would hope for And it required a little more work, but the finished product is amazing!! I don’t think we even realized how poorly our shower was functioning before. Robs’ quick timely response, his quality of work and professionalism will definitely make this household a R&R customer for all our plumbing and hvac!!! Thank you again Rob!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
