We enjoyed having Wendy and Bill as our caterers for our night of fun with friends. It was the perfect kickoff to our Memorial Day weekend. There was plenty of delicious and unique foods to taste. We had awesome wine and beer pairings as well. All of our guests enjoyed everything. We absolutely recommend trying their services!

I was extremely fortunate to have Jen Royle host a private catering event for me at my home. I was so impressed with Jen and all her services. Not only did she help plan the perfect menu for me and my guests, but she was on time, executed everything impeccably, and was the ultimate professional. I personally wanted Jen to interact with my guests and she couldn't have been more fun, energetic, or passionate about her food and cooking experiences. It should go without saying that the food was outstanding but just incase you were wondering... it was amazing. I had no idea what type of finger foods would work together but Jen planned the perfect combinations from mini chicken & waffles to tomato soup & grilled cheese shooters to beautiful salads and crostini's. Thank you, Jen for your outstanding catering services and I truly look forward to using you for all my upcoming needs!

For more than 15 years I have been involved in fundraising. I have worked with dozens of caterers over these many years and I can confidently say that Cristo's Kitchen and Catering is the best that I have worked with. Outstanding service, detail oriented, professional, delicious food, honest and a great guy. Highly recommended and I look forward to working with them again.

Like many brides, I began the tedious process of searching for a caterer for our upcoming wedding. I spoke to several catering companies that resided in the Boston area but their pricing for one night was far too expensive considering our wedding was going to span three full days for all guests. I continued to search for caterers and came across J&L Catering, which also happened to be local to me. Our first phone conversation went amazingly. John really understood my vision and was able to provide all the elements we needed for our three days (raw bar, carving station, and lobster bake). The pricing for all three days was fantastic. I was nervous that in order to meet such a great price, perhaps the food quality would be lacking. Boy was I wrong! We had our tasting of each of our three menus and everything was delicious, tender, juicy, and full of flavor. My fiancé and I were blown away with how amazing the food tasted. We could not have been more pleased with the final outcome for our wedding weekend. Our guests haven’t stop talking about how great the food was. And besides taste and price, the last element you hope for is good customer service. John and his team have this in spades. Every time I had a question about the menu or what to rent for plates, etc.; I always received a prompt phone call or email with a reply. As a bride trying to plan their big day, it is so nice to have someone there to quickly answer your questions. By the end of our long planning process and wedding weekend, we really felt like John and his team was a part of our family. That is nearly impossible to find this day and age. If you are looking to book a caterer, look no further than J&L Caterers. You will not be disappointed!

I had a small function with 30 people and every thing was perfect. The appetizer selection was beautifully presented and had wonderful flavor, Julie was very helpful in selections and extremely easy to work with. I would never use anyone else again. People that live in Boston can have a hard time finding a caterer for a small event. She was wonderful..

I think it is a resounding testimony when guests at a party are taking a photo of a persons business card during an event. Everything William did was impeccable, and made himself totally available during the event. I would (and will) recommend William to anyone that ever asks me about potential caterers for any event. I have no faults whatever to highlight, I'm sure that if I asked William to mow the lawn as part of festivities preparation that he would have done it without question.

Donna and Visnja were amazing! It was my first timing looking for caterers and I had a great experience. I primarily spoke with Donna and she was so bubbly, polite, and professional. She was quick to answer any of my questions and was very accommodating. I had a large family party but did not want to have a formal sit down dinner, so I opted for 3 of their food stations-the boardwalk, the skewer and the salad stations. They set everything up buffet style so my guests could eat at their choosing. I got so many compliments on the food! I was especially pleased to hear that the vegetarians of the group loved having so many tasty options (from the salad station). Next time I need to cater an event I know who to call. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for a caterer!

Soraya and her team were an integral part of the success of our company event this past week. From our initial phone call all the way through to the day of the event, Soraya was attentive, cooperative, creative and eager to help however she could. Her food offerings were delicious and inventive, and her service with our guests during the event was excellent. I highly recommend Soraya for catering due to her professionalism and quality of service from start to finish.

Lori Rizzo was a pleasure to work with from the first second of our conversation through many twists & turns in the catering job (including 3 changes of venue) up until the excellent food and service she provided at the event. This was for a large anniversary party of 300+. Lori helped us design a delicious and cost-effective menu, working with our budget but putting the satisfaction of the guests as a top priority as well. She provided excellent and plentiful appetizers and desserts for our guests. Through the various venue changes, we had to keep altering the menu, but she was always patient and solved every problem. She was very responsive via email and phone, and I was never for one moment worried that she wouldn't come through with excellent catering services. She had solutions to all of our various challenges in an unconventional space with last-minute changes. I would strongly recommend her to anyone and everyone.

They were fantastic every step of the way, truly. They were so helpful, on time (perfect time). They walked me through everything and did exactly what they promised (even more). Everyone raves about the food, going out of their way to ask me "Who are your caterers?". It was 1st Child's HighSchool Graduation Party, so I was nervous about everything and I couldn't express my gratitude enough for Safe Havens patience and professionalism.

We selected Renee & her company Blonde on the Run Catering for our in-home Italian Wine tasting/pairing party and we were so happy we did. Renee and Tamara were friendly, professional and very accommodating in all aspects. The menu Renee came up with to match the 7 wines from Italy rocked. The food pairing was truly a match made in heaven. We look forward to hiring Renee for our next wine tasting party!

William was amazing for our Corporate Picnic! After working with him on a menu, he came up with an collaborated with me on the perfect menu for my company as well as making sure that our vegetarian co-workers needs were met. He was wonderful in reassuring me that the event would still be wonderful even with our in climate weather of rain but he was well prepared with a tent of his own and came promptly to set up before guests arrived. He was quick on his feet and brought his partner Jennifer who attended to our needs as well as assisted in running food to our buffet line to keep it warm and stocked for the slow accrual of guests. Since then, everyone has been raving about the food, especially the steak tips! They were an amazing team, the food was spectacular and I wholeheartedly would recommend them for any catering that you could need. They went above and beyond.

I have used The Talbot Company twice for catered luncheons for my place of business for 55 staff. Both functions went off without a hitch, food was ready, presented beautifully, was delicious and a great value!! The owner was very accommodating and had great suggestions for our menu while staying within our budget. Staff raved over the food, I will use them again any time we need catering.

Megan has been involved in catering our private child care center holiday party at my house for 50 staff for 11 years. I cannot say-enough about Megan’s knowledge of menus, food preparation and presentation. she arrives with her crew ( chef and servers) with all the food and necessary accompaniments and once food prepared and/ or cooked in my kitchen, megan artistically and enticingly, arranges it on my platters, and then places them where she thinks best on my tables while also deciding which dishes are to be passed by the servers. Megan has unbelievable recall. after the first party year at my house, once I showed Megan where everything she could use was kept she checked in with me to see if I approved, I never had to remind or ask her to do anything differently.in the next 10 years. once she arrives she takes over and i do not lift a finger. all I do is admire how perfect everything looks. during the party the team replenishes the food , cleans up as they go along and when the party is over they leave everything the way the kitchen and house looked when they arrived. Megan has a true work ethic and sense of design. she is a “pro”. I and partygoers sing her praises. she is a “ gold mine”.

Chef Jennifer Broberg did a fantastic job with our all night hors d'oeuvre party for over 200 people. All of her food was delicious, creative and colorful. Her kitchen and service staff was wonderful, too! Chef Jenn did 3 different cooking demonstrations during the evening and every guest enjoyed those. She has a great personality and is very professional. I am already planning my next event with Chef Jenn!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
