Once every 10 or so rainstorms, water drips onto my dining room floor. Over 7-plus years, various contractors and handymen have tried to stop it, and failed. Wayne came by, made a nearly instant diagnosis, and promised he'd be back the next afternoon to repair it -- in less than an hour. He came back as promised, right on schedule, did his thing, and thoroughly tested it with my hose. Even cleaned out the gutters so the hose water wouldn't soak my deck. Now two rainstorms later, no leak. After 8 more storms with no leak, I'll come back to Thumbtack and give him FIVE stars!

Was very professional and presented himself well. I had other HVAC companies out and did not take time to give the right options like Dan did. I am now waiting to meet again with Dan and confirm contract

Bobby was great. This was our first time using him and his others reviews held true. He communicated well with his arrival time, when the job took a twist he was knowledgeable and repaired a mistake left by another contractor that could have been dangerous. He went and got the part and stayed true to his quote. We will be hiring Bobby for other jobs in the future for sure!

These guys are great! Showed up same day as requested and allowed me to observe their work on our HVAC. I've had some bad experience with another company and wanted to try to learn myself so I can be more educated with our units. Within 10 minutes, they found the problem, fixed it and even offered to come back on short notice should the issue re-surface. Pricing is a premium to other vendors on TT ($110 vs $80 hr) , but WELL worth it! Will 100% be using these guys in future for HVAC & Boiler needs.

Because I grew up in a stuffy house without cooling, I was always miserable in the summers. It was my childhood dream to own a house with central cooling. In 2017, we bought a house without cooling, but Currier was able to remedy that. We hired Currier to install cooling in our entire home. They also installed heating in the finished part of our basement. Starting the process, I got quotes from three contractors. Currier stood out from the other contractors for the following reasons: 1. Proposed the best solution for the house and not whatever was easiest to install 2. Clearly explained the solution. One contractor said he would put a ductless unit in a certain spot because it fit but did not consider the room layout. 3. Well priced. They weren’t the cheapest solution, but also not the most expensive. Currier was able to start the work right away. They were accommodating with our schedules. At the beginning of each week, we would tell Mark which days and partial days we could be available and Mark made the arrangements. Mark was very responsive with e-mail. The overall process took longer than expected due to unforeseen situations. There was a lot of concrete between the floors, the ceiling had tight clearances, the thermostats needed rewiring, etc. But the crew worked through the challenges. The crew was courteous and polite, and cleaned up every day before leaving. We now have cooling in what feels like one of the more humid summers in recent history. We are thankful for the Currier team for making it possible.

Great Contractor . They replaced a old gas furnace with a new 98% efficient furnace. I compared them with another company that had been doing my service for 16 years. Eric & his brother did the job and they were the most detailed and competitive. They earned the business with their communication and detail of my options. They did a great Job .! I made the right decision. A 5 Star ++++ company.

Very positive experience with new A/C installation in our 120 yrs old house. - kind, respectful and crew is the same. - knowledgeable about systems and helped us choose what would make more sense in our house. -completed the work in less time than anticipated. - minimal disruption to the house other than the expected dust. There are negligible cosmetic repair to do, and no wires on the outside of the house. Did not expect it and am thrilled about it. - did not promise what he could not deliver. Obviously takes pride in a job well done. Stands by his work and tried to solve issues when they come up. - Outstanding with following up. I had some hesitance at the beginning when he was late for an appointment for an estimate. I am very glad I went past that because he was early for everything else and turned out to be in the top two professional contractors I have ever worked with. I recommend without hesitation.

I had a newer AC unit stop working on me right when it was outside its warranty. The contractor who installed it was absolute trash with whom I had a litany of problems so I tried Modern Air HVAC. I really wish I would have had these guys from the start to do the initial work. Jeremy/Modern Air came out within 48 hours of my Thumbtack request. Despite attempts to repair the unit he stopped at parts that needed to be special ordered and told me flat out that the unit that was initially installed was some off-brand POS that is essentially built to fail. He was willing to order parts for me to fix it but in the end he told me I'd be saving myself a lot of money and issues down the road to just replace the condenser with something more reliable. I did some research on my own and basically found this all to be true and the price Jeremy/Modern Air quoted me for a new unit was more than reasonable. Within a week I had a brand new condenser unit, 5 year warranty on everything, and an HVAC guy that not only knew his stuff but was trustworthy, reliable, and did the little things like reply to texts and phone calls and let you know if he was going to be running behind. All things considered it would have been hard to disappoint me based on the first company I had hired, but I really felt like Modern Air HVAC went above and beyond to make sure the job was done right and that I was happy. I highly recommend these guys for any HVAC issues!

North Shore HVACR was a lifesaver, the AC was gone in two rental units. Another contractor had transportation issues getting the job done (it happens), however we were now in a heat wave the day before the 4th of July. Lewis' team came to the rescue, even on the holiday, and had both units cooling off our great tenants in no time. This level of professional dependability is a treasured asset.

Odean was great! Showed up on time, helped explain what he was going to do and worked quickly. He also pointed out a few small electrical/HVAC things I might want to look into which would go a long way to saving money. Will definitely hire again.

I can't recommend Mike highly enough. Mike Kikpatrick is old school. He is courteous, fair, thorough and very down to earth. His bid was the second lowest of the six I received, but close enough to the lowest that I hired him because I trusted and liked him as a person. I had two complete AC systems installed (both the outside compressor and the inside air handler). He always showed up within 5 minutes of when he said he would. If he was any later than that (once a supplier was out of what he needed so he had to go to a second supplier), he called or emailed to update me on his ETA. He did not take any shortcuts. When there were a couple parts that needed replacing, he didn't charge extra for them. When he ran into a couple surprises and things took longer than he expected, he kept at it and didn't charge extra. He charges for the job. He was flexible when I wanted him to do additional work. He personally supervises or does all the work himself. He has decades of experience and knows what he's doing. He gives good advice, but is open to your suggestions. He doesn't try to talk you into things you don't need. He's very responsible, trustworthy and respectful of your property. I plan to use him for service and any future HVAC needs. I can't think of a single thing he could have done any better.

We woke up to 2 degrees Fahrenheit and NO HEAT! We tried reaching our regular gas furnace maintenance contractor and several other local contractors without any luck. When we found Tim through Thumbtack we were so grateful. He quickly assessed our issue over the phone, purchased the part and got to our house that same day. Thank goodness! Not only is a he a professional but very personable too. We plan to contract Tim again to install a humidifying system. Thanks Tim!

Over the past 3 months, I have dealt with many contractors due to the rough winter, none as professional and efficient as Val. I wanted a high efficiency, ductless Mitsubishi air conditioner and Vals price was more than 20% less expensive than everyone else. He provided the unit and conducted the install. He was in and out in no time. He worked closely with my electrician and even he had very good things to say about Val. I would definitely recommend contacting him about one of these units, or any HVAC needs you may have!

Mario was very professional and timely. I was very happy with the ventilation work he did for me as he came in and was done in no time. Everything looks clean and very well done. I also had Mario come in to look at a central air condenser and his pricing was more than fair. I would recommend Mario for any future HVAC jobs you may have.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
