These guys were awesome!!! We purchased a piano for our church and have a function this Friday evening. The original movers never showed up on Tuesday after they made us wait several hours before telling us they needed to reschedule to Wednesday (yesterday) and when they finally arrived yesterday after being 2 hours late, they tried to move our piano up 7 stairs and damaged our wall and the piano. Granted, it's an older piano, it was still damaged. They could not get the piano up the stairs and gave up after all that waiting and stress. I contacted Omar at All Pro Piano Movers late last night and he assured me he would be up early this morning to get the piano in for us. I could not believe how fast he responded and what an amazing job these guys did and . Truly our hero's! Not only did he show up and do an awesome job on such short notice, he also repaired the piano that the other movers damaged and he never charged us extra for any of this. I highly recommend All Pro! Thank you Omar and Crew!

I just finished my move today with Max, Joe, and Steve of Boston Best Rate Movers. This was my first time ever hiring movers and they made it amazingly easy! The total trip was from the 2nd floor of a storage (with a broken elevator!) in Boston to the 3rd-floor apartment of a Brooklyn brownstone. I was transported with my stuff to New York over great conversation, and everything went as planned with no complications. I would use them again in a heartbeat! The only thing I regret is the amount of tip I left them, which I found out after a quick google search, wasn't nearly enough! These guys were so amazing they didn't complain about it. Will definitely seek them out again/recommend them for future moves.

Flawless, courteous service from start to finish. Alex sent me a quote instantly, and stayed in touch the whole time. The movers, Divia and Tavas showed up on time, packed the small amount of furniture we had with care, and did a phenomenal job. The price was the best. Highly recommend!

We moved from a 2-bed apartment to a townhouse about 5 miles away. The moving took lot more time than expected, because, even though we were promised 3 movers, only 2 showed up. However, we were charged very little as extra as they accepted that it was their fault. On a whole, these guys are very hard working. Would recommend them, but make sure the right # of movers show up.

Jack and Fred are absolutely amazing!!! They made the dreaded moving day an absolute breeze. Unlike my experience with previous movers, they offered an honest service; quick, friendly and inexpensive. They're everything I always imagined movers should be. They also went above and beyond, suggesting and then helping us donate furniture that didn't fit in our new apartment. I couldn't be happier with choosing Miss Cheryl's Moving! You guys are the best!!

Great experience! They arrived on time and the entire move was incredibly efficient. Two movers came very prepared, and they were ready to even take down my mounted TV. I would recommend Step by Step to any friend or family member.

I loved that Lexel gave me a fixed rate (no surprise charges!) and they quoted me much less than any other movers. They called me the day before to see if it would be okay to come earlier, and they called me around that time to let me know they were 15 minutes away. There were only a couple snags: I've never used movers before, so I didn't realize that they would ONLY take things that were packed in boxes (a liability issue, I guess, which I understand). I had a lot of thing packed in tote bags, open-top wicker totes, and laundry baskets, so I had to repack those at the last minute. This was a little stressful and lead to me having to make multiple trips with my own car - I wish I had known beforehand that everything had to be in a sealed box with a lid. I've been unpacking and my belongings seem to be in good shape so far. I've only found one box that appears to have had a rough trip (the box itself was damaged, and a smaller box inside was damaged too.)

Frontier Moving was great, I would definitely hire them again for any of my moves and also strongly recommend them. I started looking for movers just 2 days before my move and was able to secure their services. Cathal was quick to respond, easy to get in touch with, and reached out directly to confirm the details of my move. The move itself was seamless, Cathal and Joe showed up right on time, got to work immediately, and moved all of my furniture with ease. The move took the exact amount of time that Cathal quoted me and the prices are very reasonable. Thanks Frontier Moving!

Moving is never fun. But a two week closing and a last minute move from DC to MA in the dead of winter when you've got pneumonia and two little kids -- complicates how not fun moving can be. Add to that, a glitch in customer service from PODS that delayed delivery a day...and you've got our experience. John was helpful, responsive, flexible and...dare I say it...found the humor in the situation with us. He brought an associate, also named John, and they moved all of our things in seamlessly. And put together our beds (actually assembled the bunk beds for our kids) even when the day dragged into the cold, cold night. I recommend them without hesitation.

Mackeile is an exception, you don't get to work with someone so professional in his field very often, he is really Super Mover !!!! Thank you Mackeile for a great moving experience, you and your time really impressed us !!!!

I never thought I would say this about moving, but this was a great experience! The movers called me when they were leaving the warehouse to give me a heads up, were extremely careful with my belongings, and so nice and friendly to boot! And all this came at an amazing price - having used other, larger companies in the past, I was SHOCKED (in a good way) when they told me how much it was. Flash was fantastic all around. I will definitely be using them again and recommending them to all of my friends!

I have moved enough times in my life to know how stressful it can be and that most times things just don’t work out as expected. I used Xpress Movers for my last two moves and both were absolutely amazing. This last time I had some challenging stairs to deal with but the teams had a positive attitude and were willing to work VERY hard to make everything work. I was blown away and they took a stressful day and made it work better than I could have hoped.

They arrived 2 hours early for my scheduled move, after calling to request they come 1 hour early. It was pretty stressful having to pull the last minute stuff together with them already moving things out. Also Amadeo accidentally charged my credit card twice and was uncertain of how to refund the second transaction. We did eventually figure it out though. Other than that, they were friendly and professional, worked quickly and none of my stuff had any damage. Can't really ask for more than that!

Great experience! Glad I found Octopus M&S, very friendly and responsive. Even though it's been a hectic time, they were great at keeping the conversation going and I didn't have to worry about anything. Price negotiation was smooth, very good price for a last-minute call for the 1st of September! Wish the Octopus Moving and Storage all the best! If I was to move again, I'd definitely give you a call!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
