Had just moved into our apartment had realized the disposal and sink drain were completely wrecked. Running the water for five seconds would result in a back up into our sink. Paul was able to come out very quickly (on his day off no less) and replace our disposal in less than an hour. It turned out that the clog was further down in the building's pipes, but Paul fixed everything that was broken on our end and was completely transparent about his rates. Really nice guy and the only plumber we could find who was willing to do a house call after 5 PM on a weekday.

We hired Dave to install and paint some wood siding on our house. He arrived on time, had all his own tools, ladders etc, finished the project on time and cleaned up the area. Did what he said he was going to do and did it well.

Carlos was awesome! He always showed up when he said he would, his price is very reasonable and i felt very comfortable with him in our house alone while we were at work! He did a major kitchen/bath remodel for us on our very old house which could have been a nightmare but he was able to clean up old wiring and install new in a timely, cost effective manor. He will be our go to electrician in the future!

I hired Ernie to intall a new dishwasher. Ernie was beyond responsive, and his punctuality and professionalism is something many other plumbers should learn from. He demonstrated to be very knowledgeable and experienced, recommending options without being condescending. You know a plumber has plenty of experience when they don't have to come to your house for a quote just to install a dishwasher. They know well what the job intakes and how long they need to complete it. He gave me a fair quote right from the get-go and when he came to do the job, he worked really fast and efficiently. I must point out, that he was very accommodating as I requested him to come sooner than what we had agreed and he came without hesitation and without asking for more money for the inconvenience. He is so experienced and competent, that I decided to continue hiring him for any future projects around the house.

As a frequent Thumbtack user, I've had a lot of contractors work on my house including other painters. Cleynira Construction and the owner Cody are by far the best we've ever used. They painted the outside of our 1950 colonial and it looks fantastic!! Cody also used his construction skills to remedy some tricky wood rot in some decorative detailing areas near that I thought would be very difficult to fix. If you want superior quality work at a very competitive price, I highly recommend these guys. I'm extremely happy with their work and I will rehire them at every opportunity.

Lathan was wonderful to work with! He reframed a door for me on the inside and out. The house is 100 years old with detailed molding. He went above and beyond to find matching molding for the door. It came out perfect!! I also bought a porch swing only to find out there was no beam in my porch ceiling to hang it from. Lathan did a fabulous job removing a tongue and groove ceiling to install a beam and replace the ceiling after. He was fantastic about answering questions, scheduling, and overall a great and personable guy who I feel lucky to have met to help with the million and one things needed around the house. Thank you Lathan for the great job! -Kathy

Russell did a great job working through my list of to-do items while prepping to sell my home. He rehung a pesky bifold closet door that had been giving me trouble for years; it slides smoothly now. He was easy to work with and trustworthy - I was able to give him access to the house when I was at work. The job was done well and completed on time. I highly recommend him.

I couldn't be happier with how our interior paint work came out! Marcio and team painted every room in our house from bold, dark colors (from the previous owner) to light, modern beautiful colors. The trim, ceiling, and baseboard white really makes the house feel brand new. Marcio worked with the price we were able to afford and went above & beyond to get the work down in time for our move. He also coordinated a reasonably priced cleaner at the end and they did a spectacular job.. there was not an ounce of dust to be found! Painting for 8 rooms (first and second floor) took about two weeks, paint was included in the pricing, and after doing my research - he was the most reasonable out there. Very high quality work. My husband and I are very happy homeowners now!

I hired Alek to update some trim work and moulding in my house. Alek was very professional, timely, and very reasonable on price. His service, response time, and reasonable pricing made it an easy decision to hire him to complete the job. Alek was and remained dedicated during the whole process to complete the job and ensure high quality work. It was very evident Alek was very experienced and knowledgeable. I cannot say enough about the professionalism of GF Construction. I hired GF Construction for a complete remodel of my house. The project was completed on time with few tweaks to the budget for changes along the way. I was kept informed throughout the project. A project like this comes with lots of decisions. Gilson was patient and helped me immensely throughout out this process. I would recommend GF Construction without hesitation.

True professionals are as good as gold! I put off remodeling my home for years because I dreaded the hassle of dealing with contractors and designers. When I finally committed to having the work done, I went through at least 8 General Contractors and designers to find the right fit. Each of these was either overly expensive, or had overbearing personalities, or sounded like used car salesmen.... Until I connected with Byron Cuhna and Co. Byron runs a family operated construction company that handles all size jobs. Byron came in and helped my wife and I work through the design of a large addition 26x24 on with a two car garage and bedrooms/bath above it, as well as another 15x15 family room on the opposite side of the house. Byron not only gave us great design ideas, he helped us add features that would be more cost effective and efficient. Byron and his son Eric were on the job from start to finish, and made the experience of living in "construction" much more bearable, and at a price affordable enough that I can still pay my children's college tuition next year. I highly recommend Byron Cuhna construction, I will update this review with final before and after pictures of my house. Carmelo

Mr Fix It was the contractor I decided to use to remodel my kitchen & bathroom. Mark was extremely helpful with the design and layout of my kitchen and bathroom. We discussed a price, and unless I changed something he did not change me a penny more than the agreed price. He was very helpful in every aspect of the remodel. Him and his subcontractors were very honest. The plumber, Electrian, tile person, and painters were very professional. They did everything I asked for and more. Every night the job left clean and organized. I can’t say enough nice things about Mark and his crews. They did a fantastic job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
