Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

I would recommend Top Rank Movers to anyone. Kate was always quick to respond to my questions and book our moving date. Movers arrived on time and did an excellent job!

The movers were supposed to arrive at 8 AM on our move day. I got a call from the manager stating one of their trucks broke down due to a mistake by an employee, and they would have to push our move back to afternoon. The movers did not arrive until after 2 PM! It took them about 8.5 hours to finish the move due to having to make two trips to our old apt. This really messed up our 11-mo old's sleep schedule, and we are still paying the price. I asked the manager for a discount. He only gave us $50 off! Will never hire these movers in the future again!

these guys are great. however it took longer than the quoted time, so be aware. they told me 3.5 hours with 3 movers to move 2br apartment, but it took them more than 5hrs. hire more movers and add 1-2 hr to the estimated time.

These guys deserve 6 stars. Quoted 4 guys and a truck for $650 to move a 2bedroom. Arrived with 6 guys and two trucks. My past moves took 5-6 hours. This move took 2.5 hours. Unbelievable! Great group of guys too. I tipped $100. Wish I could have done more.

These guys were more than great. They replied immediately, gave a right (and reasonable) quote for my baby grand and moving conditions, moved fast and careful. What impressed me was that Omar is very knowledgable about pianos and piano maintenance. As a concert pianist and teacher I take great care of my instrument and was glad to find someone I can trust with the move. Highly recommended!

The Next Adventure team of Ben, Aly, and Stef went above and beyond our expectations. They showed up early, assessed our situation, and got right to work. They moved efficiently and methodically both at the pick-up and drop-off. The part I appreciated most was how accommodative the team was of our ever-changing situation. They were also masked/gloved at all times throughout the entirety of the move, which is highly commendable when you're moving furniture and boxes up 3 flights of stairs! Thanks again guys, you made this the easiest move of all time.

Born To Move did a pretty good job with our move. We did have a lot to pack/move, but the overall job took a lot longer than we thought it would. They wrapped everything, down to each individual spice container (so that's good if you're concerned about things not breaking, bad if you want it to take less time or use less packing material). They also broke the leg off of a bookshelf and the corner off of a dresser. Fortunately they are just from IKEA. But ultimately they got everything moved, were nice, and nothing else broke.

I had to change the date and time of my move last minute and they didn’t make a big deal out of it was able to accommodate me. Very quick, professional, thorough, and great with communication. I would definitely use their services again for my next move.

We had a good experience with Step by step moving. The team of 3 came in and did a good job of moving from our old apartment to our new condo. The furniture were dismantled wrapped in sheets and they put it all together in the new place. They even picked up a refrigerator on the way from a different location.Though their rates are not very low, over all I am happy with their services and would recommend them to others.

Prompt, polite, and professional! The crew of three was so calm and steady and took great care of everything. They also made sure to understand what I needed for organizing, etc. They eliminated any hint of stress on moving day!

Service was great from start to finish! They were very responsive with my initial request and my booking was confirmed within minutes. They showed up right on time and packed my apartment up into the moving truck in less than 2-hours. They asked me various questions throughout the process to ensure all of my belongings were taken care of. They wrapped anything that could have been scratched in the move. With the exception of my luggage handle being torn all of my belongings survived my 30-hour road trip to Texas. I would definitely re-hire them if needed!

The two gentlemen who came to move our piano were professional, courteous, and caring. They did their job efficiently. The only reason this is not a five-star rating is the fact that there was a multi-hour delay in their arrival and the only way that I knew was that I called them. More care with customer service would go a long way.

We were very pleased with the excellent service and very reasonable price offered by Tom for moving a bed from Cambridge to Melrose and taking a sofa back from Melrose to Cambridge. He stayed on touch by calling and texting so we were aware of when to expect him in both locations. He took apart a queen size bed frame and reassembled it on site for the flat rate quote that he had given us. He had materials to wrap and protect the furniture and also a mattress cover to protect the mattress. Quite by coincidence, Tom mentioned a house that was coming on the the market in Melrose, a tip which we passed along to friends. Our friends bought the house today! So an extra special thanks to Tom for the timely tip in addition to helping move our furniture in a professional manner!

I had a wonderful experience with Premium Q! They were on right on time (in fact, a few minutes early!), extremely professional, and most importantly cared about my belongings. They wrapped everything nicely before transporting and were very patient with me as I didn't have time to label each box. Hopefully I'm in my home for a long time but I will definitely recommend them to friends and family! Thanks for the taking the stress out of my move!!

I loved that Lexel gave me a fixed rate (no surprise charges!) and they quoted me much less than any other movers. They called me the day before to see if it would be okay to come earlier, and they called me around that time to let me know they were 15 minutes away. There were only a couple snags: I've never used movers before, so I didn't realize that they would ONLY take things that were packed in boxes (a liability issue, I guess, which I understand). I had a lot of thing packed in tote bags, open-top wicker totes, and laundry baskets, so I had to repack those at the last minute. This was a little stressful and lead to me having to make multiple trips with my own car - I wish I had known beforehand that everything had to be in a sealed box with a lid. I've been unpacking and my belongings seem to be in good shape so far. I've only found one box that appears to have had a rough trip (the box itself was damaged, and a smaller box inside was damaged too.)

Add 3-4 hours to whatever price they quote you. If it takes them an hour to get to you due to travel that time is. Bathed to you, also my with some other hidden fees. That said, they did a great job loading and unloading all my stuff. The 4 guys weren’t very big so don’t pack using extra large boxes. I hired four guys to move a theee bedroom apartment. Was quoted 4 hours. Took about 7.5 (and I helped unload). They spent 4 hours loading into the truck and 3 ish unloading)
