Jennifer is exactly what we needed. We had to surrender our dog due to aggressive behavior. From the first moment I contacted her I knew she would tell me the truth and do what needed to be done for everyone involved to have a happy life. She sat down with us an explained how we had gotten to the point, why she felt she could not help us train him and then held our hand through the entire process. What was awesome was when we sat down with her she listened heard our story asked us questions to really understand what we need from her, then gave her honest opinion. Her knowledge of the anxiety and behavior our dog was exhibiting was very helpful in our decision. I have talked with multiple trainers who said they could help or offered support and fell through or gave false hope. Jennifer is not that at all. She has checked in with me every day, answering any questions that I had. I felt like she was in my corner. I can not thank her enough for making sure not only I was okay but so was my dog. She is a trainer that will give you her best no matter what. It has been such a pleasure working with her during a very hard time in our lives!!!!!

Unbelievable. I have a 12 week old Australian Cattle mix and almost no experience in training dogs. Peter is extremely professional, kind, and experienced. He came right on time to my house at 5:30AM and brought treats for my puppy and even gave me a clicker. I noticed a clear difference in my puppy and Peter helped me to understand more about animal behavior. I look forward to our next session this coming week! He is outstanding!

Theresa's love for animals and patience is untouchable. She provided me with detailed notes and feedback from our sessions. I saw an incredible change in my dog's behavior and manners. I would strongly recommend Theresa. Even after my sessions were over, she has remained a resource.

My puppy Benny and I had a great experience with Sandy. She taught me many skills to use with Benny that shaped his positive behavior as a puppy. She was always available for advice via text and phone (about training and advice about raising a puppy). She is very professional and also very friendly. Her love for dogs shows in the work she does! I would highly recommend Sandy.

We hired Lori for a consultation for our dog's aggressive behavior towards the cat. She pointed out that getting back to basics with the dog would be rewarding in many ways. Her tips were simple and helpful. Lori was also flexible with her schedule, which was needed for full time working parents of a young child! I will hire her again if/when the need arises.

My new dog (Rina) that I adopted a month ago from a shelter is very nervous and afraid of any type of noise and barks at people walking by the house, and at us when we try to leave the house. I have not even left her home alone yet. I realized how bad this was within the first few days and realized that I was going to have to find help for her (and me). I found Lee's name and read about her credentials and her experience working with dogs with the same problems as Rina and contacted her right away. I also saw that Lee believes in only positive reinforcement training ONLY which is very important to me. Lee responded quickly and began to send me information I could start reading re. Rina's behavior in advance of the Consultation we had planned. When Lee arrived for the consult, Rina did not make it easy for her at all to even step into the house - - barking at the "stranger" and carrying on for awhile! She was VERY upset! Eventually, with Lee's skills and understanding of the situation, she slowly made her way into the house, and after a few minutes, was sitting at our dining room table, and Rina was looking for more treats - - and then even laying at her feet! This was not an easy task, believe me. Lee told me that she specialized in these types of nervous, phobic dogs and she sure proved it to me yesterday! She took her time with Rina and really knew how to handle the situation. I was very impressed with that, and I learned a lot during the consult regarding Rina's distress and how we can help her. I plan to continue into a training program soon with Lee when she feels Rina is ready.

Excellent is an understatement. This is more than just obedience training. It is insight to the dog/human relationship, from the dogs point of view. I didn't think I could change the behavior of my 4 1/2 year old dog, but I was mistaken. I just needed to stop doing all the wrong things. Don't go elsewhere just to realize you should have made Progressive Canine Dog Training and Behavioral Services your first stop!

Yvonne is AWESOME! a self proclaimed dog-person who won our cats over instantly. She clearly loves and values all animals! She took superior care of our 3 cats for a week (one of them needed meds) and took care of our house-related items as well. She stayed in contact and we felt secure that our fur babies were safe and happy the whole time. We couldn't have been more pleased.

Noelle is amazing at what she does!!! I was fearful that I was going to have to give my beautiful dog away as she kept jumping and scratching my elderly father. I heard about Noelle through a family friend who had used her services and immediately decided to contact her. Initially I had no hopes, but after our first consultation, I knew I was in great hands! She came to my house and we set goals and started training immediately. Noelle introduced key commands as well as behaviors for my dog to learn and follow. The connection she was able to make with my dog was very unique and has allowed her to make significant progress. We have now conquered the jumping issue and had moved on to other goals. Noelle has enabled me to have a better relationship with my dog and taught me how to make my dog do what I want her to do, a concept easier said than done. Very thankful for Noelle and what she has done for my family.

We recently moved to Woburn, from New York City. Donna has been wonderful; she has met our every need with our two adorable senior dogs. Donna leaves us updates daily as to how their walks have been and who they have met along their travels. We use Donna during the week while we are at work but also have used her while we went away for Christmas and New Year’s. She is friendly, outgoing and companionate about our fur children. They love her, she takes extra good care of them and we are never worried about how they are doing. Donna even plays with our kitty when she visits. We have had Dog walkers in the past that will pay no attention to our cat. But Donna loves all animals. I highly recommend her. She is bonded and insured, coming from NYC we were very selective as to who cares for our pets while we are at work or away.

Katy was so sweet to our new puppy Rylie. Even though we are not new puppy owners, it was so helpful to really understand how to control their behaviors from a young age. She was very patient when sharing information on proper techniques to practice on a daily basis. I would highly recommend a few of the trainings to be one on one so you can ask questions and she can see your dogs training opportunities for future training sessions.

Katie dogsits for me when I go away on business trips or go into Boston for the weekend, and I could not recommend her more highly! She is caring and attentive to my dog; my dog gets so excited to see her. My dog is medium to high energy and Katie always tires her out. She is extremely knowledgable about dogs and dog behavior and has given me several tools to help keep my dog more mentally engaged and less stressed. Katie is punctual, she remembers all sorts of details about every dog, and she is my go-to whenever I need someone. Best dog sitter/walker in the Providence area!

I've worked with Kim with my terrier mix one on one and at a leash-reactive training class and highly recommend her in either setting. She was so tuned into my dog and really clearly has a way with them. She's also a terrific teacher in a group setting and can corral a class of a dozen dogs (and owners!)! Kim gave me specific techniques that I have continued to incorporate on my own that have helped considerably. When we worked together she just seemed to know the challenges beneath my dog's behavior - she is a keen observer and listener to both people and dogs and she really knows her stuff. A gem.

We are so happy that we found Erica for dog walking services through Thumbtack. She was very quick to get back to us and even came over to meet us in person. She is very knowledgeable about animals as she used to be a vet assistance and she is extremely professional. She is very flexible to work with your needs and she is happy to adjust times and visits per your pet needs. Her prices are great too for the quality service you get! We feel very at ease knowing she is taking goof care of our puppy when we are at work.

I was nervous about bring my puppy Finn back to Boston after having a couple days of training in RI, but she helped me to feel more confident to take care of him and continue with training on my own for a few days. Her knowledge about dog behavior really helped me to under stand what I need to do to help my puppy understand me, and for me to understand him. I can't show enough gratitude that she drove all the way to Boston to help me, and I would recommend her to anyone dealing with training.

She is amazing with the animals! She taught my dog (and me) most of the basic commands in just 45 mins with great results! She spent a good 2 hrs. Talking about ways I can help my dog (new rescue), and how she is willing to help me. I could not have found a better, more personable trainer than Kim.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
