So glad to find a reliable and pleasant handyman. Stephen comes on time - works hard - and completes his job with no fuss. Look forward to hiring him for all future handyman jobs. File cabinets unpacked and moved to the 2nd floor. Materials hauled away. Great worker who does the job he was hired for.

Dave is very personable and a joy to work with. He keeps you up to date every inch of the way by sending pictures to you of the process of the project he is making for you. This helps a lot, so that you can change or add before it is finished. My husband collects belt buckles, so for x-mas I wanted to give him the cabinet he has wanted for years. Dave is a master at working with wood I will definitely hire him to do our next project. I felt that his price was very reasonable for all the work that was involved. Thank you Dave. The Fallons

We contacted Northeast Construction first based solely on the very professional email they sent. They were also the first to come look at the job, had the estimate to us the next day. Not the cheapest price but after speaking with Brandon I was sold on their experience. Three guys came out to our house, two worked the Sheetrock and one on the cabinet. Everything was covered and throughly cleaned over the couple days that they were there. The work was great, cabinet is perfect, couldn't ask for any thing better or different. Brandon came out to look everything over once the job was done.

I need to fix my oven door. The first company I called charged me a Huge service charge and then told me that the trim is discontinued and they cannot fix it. I found Joe on a local town FB board and he came by and fixed that oven door. So so grateful. He also installed a cook top, fixed a loose kitchen cabinet and a closet door. Highly recommend Dream Conceptions

They remodeled my kitchen this past summer, including the demo, and installed new cabinets, tile, backsplash, and re-finished the wood floor. It was completed in a reasonable time without any surprises. I would recommend them for any project, big or small.

Gary Barcus built 3 cabinet pieces for my boston apartment. Each of the 3 turned out great. He was very easy to work with; had good design ideas, delivered on time, was very neat and clean with the install. No problems whatsoever. It could not have gone better.

I had LJV open up my kitchen to the living area and create a new counterspace with shelving below. In addition he did painting of the kitchen and hallway. The costs were VERY reasonable, and he helped with suggestions for the space as I was unsure about exactly what I wanted at the start. No complaints, everything looks great and at a very affordable price.

We wanted under stair storage. Not an easy area to fill, utilizing all the space. Mike came out to look at the area, had some great ideas, and had custom storage built and installed in less time than quoted. It came out even better than imagined! Mike’s attention to detail is commendable. He and his crew were a pleasure to work with.

Dan installed a butcher block countertop on some newly installed cabinets. We'd ordered the butcher block custom-made and then realized upon receipt that the company didn't do installs. Dan was willing to come out to do this small job for a fair price. Dan was friendly and knowledgeable and when we realized that the cabinets had settled improperly - leaving a noticeable gap between the counter and two cabinets - he walked through my options, including figuring out whether he could stick around and re-install the cabinets for me. We ended up choosing to just install some filler on our own, but Dan seemed to actually care that he walked through how to do it so it would look good in the end. One of the problems with this review is that I can't guarantee quality of work until the butcher block has expanded/contracted over multiple seasons. I had to leave before the end of the install, but Dan was willing to take a call from me and walk through the ways he'd relieved the butcher block to account for minimal expansion of the wood. He also gave a "I stand behind my work" spiel and said I could always call in the future if the countertop buckles and he'd come and fix it. He spoke frequently about how his real passion is custom cabinetry and kitchen additions. Obviously, I can't speak to his work on cabinetry, but if you want an attentive, easy-to-deal with contractor for a future kitchen job I feel like Dan is a good bet.

I’d been looking for a stand alone cabinet for my bathroom for quite a while. I decided to have one custom built to my specifications. Bernie built a cabinet to meet my needs exactly. It looks great in my bathroom. The quality and value are great. I am very pleased.

We had a smaller project where we needed to add on to existing cabinets/counters. We couldn't match the existing granite that was in place but settled on a butcher block top. Ken came up with a great design. The cabinets and butcher block top came out looking great. It was a long process because we were not really in a rush and told Ken that (we were the ones taking our time). So we can't speak to if you needed work done quickly how fast Ken would be able to get to it. There were some minor miscommunications around timing but they were quickly resolved. Ken is professional and it's clear he has been doing great work for a long time. Would definitely recommend.

After working with Jarret to redo my kitchen, I couldn't imagine a better fit for the job. Jarret was a combination of fair and talented. He offered recommendations based on my taste and budget and I am delighted with how the end result looked. He also built me an epoxy table which is is beyond words.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
