Our experience with Clean Slate was great! We live in a multi level brownstone, so I knew the job of interior and exterior window washing would be a tough one, particularly with its old windows and tricky storms. Frank and his team were very professional, and spent an extraordinary amount of time making sure the job was done well. We will definitely hire Clean Slate again for future jobs.

Jeff was able to fit me into his busy schedule. I needed a kitchen cabinet removed to accommodate a new refrigerator. He removed the cabinet and hung it in another spot, as well as made repairs to the wall caused by the original builder. He also replaced rotted trim wood around exterior window. He does excellent quality work at a good value, he is punctual and calls ahead. I am looking for more jobs for him to do.

Needed a drywall replaced due to water damage. Reubert walked me through the work and gave me a very fair estimate for the work which was completed 2 days later. I have no problem recommending Reubert for drywall installation or repair.

Felipe and his crew were responsible for installing all interior wood trim for our recent home addition and renovation. They were also tasked with various and miscellaneous carpentry work including door and door hardware installation, and fabrication and installation of several custom millwork items (fireplace mantel; powder room sink top, custom shelving). All work was completed carefully, expeditiously and with a smile. Felipe and his team proved to be an invaluable resource to help keep our project on schedule. We could not be more pleased with the service. I would highly recommend FW Home Improvement.

Mark Dubois's Custom Carpentry did an amazing job finishing our basement. Our new space includes a 3/4 bathroom, game room and workout area. Mark even designed and built custom built-ins, making the final product exceed our expectations. Mark was in constant communication, prompt, neat (always cleaned up before leaving) and did high quality work within our budget. We also hired Mark to replace two exterior doors and repair some cracked floor tiles. Highly recommend.

Gary and his team at Symphony Home Improvements were absolutely awesome! I was a little nervous to have such a big (for me) project done, but they were able to answer all my questions, and really put my nerves at ease. All our questions were answered right away, Gary was there to answer all our calls and we were never left wondering what or when anything was happening. Timing was great, earlier than I had expected! I had about 10 windows replaced. 2 half-round, 2 picture windows, 2 crank outs, and 4 double hung. Out of these only 2 double hung were replacement windows. All others were new construction. The whole process went very smoothly. Kerry Crowley was great with handling all things and keeping me informed throughout the process. She always responded quickly to my questions. And double checked with me when in doubt. The installation also went very smoothly. The installation staff arrived on time and started work right away. The installers were extra careful in preserving my interior stained trim so it didn't replacement or wholesale restaining. That saved me some money too. The install took less time than they initially anticipated (1 day instead of potentially another half-day or a day more). This meant my home was back to normal by evening and I was back at work the next day! The installers protected all interior surfaces, exterior shrubs (the window was on the side of the yard that sloped down and had tall shrubs) & cleaned up very well after themselves. After the installation and few months after installation Renoviso followed up with to ensure my satisfaction with the windows and installation. I highly recommend Renoviso & would definitely use them for any future window needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
