Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

Reviews for Somerville dance instructors
Stephanie L.
Paul has been a lifesaver for me and my fiance in learning some foxtrot for our upcoming wedding day! When preparing for our big day only a few weeks away, we realized that we needed some serious help to look great on the dance floor for our first dance. I submitted a request for dance lessons late into one evening in desperation for some emergency help (and my hopes weren't very high being so last minute), and Paul responded immediately! He is thorough in teaching basic steps, and has adjusted the complexity and built on prior lessons to make us gradually learn and improve our dance skills with each lesson. He is patient with us and has a wonderful way of explaining steps and movements to make our learning the choreography so easy. We would highly recommend Paul for dance lessons, particularly for those who are looking to add some special moves for their first wedding dance!
