This was the first time using a pet sitter service for my horses. How lucky was I to come across Wesley and Mellisa's pet sitting service on Thumbtack . They both came to my barn ahead of my weekend away to watch my routine of care . While I was away they kept track of the weather and came early and brought my horses in ahead of time one day due to an impending storm. When I returned my barn was immaculate ! I also received daily pictures of my girls , if you are looking for a pet sitting service that goes beyond just feeding your pets while your away , and you want peace of mind they are the ones to call . I look forward to have them take care of my horses in the future .

Kristin is wonderful with dogs and truly understands how to motivate them and communicate with them. She also offers great training both written and by example for us humans too!! We also used Kristin as an overnight pet sitter for our 2 dogs and 2 cats while we took a family vacation for 9 days!! It was a relief to have someone here with them who kept to their daily routine and treated them like her own. She kept us updated with pictures and videos!! Highly recommend her services and we are absolutely going to hire her again!!

I couldn't be more satisfied with Stephanie as a dog walker. She responded to my last minute request. Spent more time than was expected for walk and play time and sent me pictures every day. She has an affinity for animals and people! I highly recommend her for pet walking/sitting.

Kathy is wonderful - she went above and beyond my expectations, communicated often about how my dog was doing, and provided loving care, not just pet sitting! We recently relocated and had to go out of town - we were in a new place, and our dog was nervous as it was from the move - he took to Kathy right away. She took care of him for 5 days while we were out of town, and even cleaned up his "nervous" messes. I recommend her very highly. She is very competent, caring, and highly professional.

MacKenzie did a wonderful job. Not only did she care for our cats, but she left everything neat and clean and brought in our mail and packages. She also gave me text updates on how the cats were doing. I’ll definitely be using MacKenzie for all our pet sitting needs.

Shayna was such a lovely person and an excellent cat sitter! My mom and I have three cats and they are our babies - we spoil them rotten and give them unconditional love and the best care - therefore when we needed to leave town suddenly for a long weekend, we were unsure if we'd actually be able to go because we didn't have a petsitter. I quickly did some research on thumbtack and came across Shayna (Nanny Wags). We were nervous to leave our babies with someone new, but were thoroughly impressed with Shayna. She stayed at our house while we were gone and took fantastic care of our cats, happily tending to the specific needs of each one, and giving them all so much love, play, and attention. She also stayed in contact regularly while we were gone, sending pictures of the cats and updates along the way. When my mom and I returned yesterday, the house was clean and the cats were happy and well cared for - we couldn't be more grateful. We not only had a great experience using Nanny Wags, but are excited to have found a sitter that we will absolutely use into the future. Thank you so very much Shayna, my mom and I would excitedly recommend you to anyone needing pet sitting services of any kind!

I would highly recommend Deborah for pet sitting services. You can tell she loves her job and her furry clients. Deborah took such great care of my dog Dixie and my friends dog Murphy while we vacationed for a week. I don't think they wanted to come home. They were quite tuckered out upon their return. Thanks Deborah for treating our dogs like they were your own!

The groomers did a nice job and they really seemed to care about the cat's well being. I liked how they would talk to the cat to calm him down during the more stressful parts of grooming.

Karen is wonderful with my dog! Usually after the initial meet & greet I prefer to be at the first few visits until I know my dog and the pet sitter are comfortable with each other. But my dog took yo Karen immediately and I was able to skip that step very comfortably. My dog fell in love with her instantly, and he is usually a very cautious dog. And as dog lovers know, we can trust their instincts. Karen has been so flexible and goes above & beyond. I'm so grateful I found her!

Emily has been taking care of our "baby" Belle for the past few years. There is nothing better than going on vacation and feeling so comfortable that our home and our pets are well taken care of. She takes such good care of Belle, and I think Belle is sad when its us coming through the door and not Emily. She spoils them and the house is as clean as I left it. I highly recommend Emily to everyone and anyone that loves their pets and doesn't want to put them in a kennel while you vacation!

Kendra has been watching my dog Cooper for 5 years now. I can't think of enough good things to say about her!! It is such a relief to go on vacation and have her stay at our house. Not only does she give my dog excellent care, somehow my house is cleaner then when I left! On one particular trip as we were leaving my dog had a little cough, a couple of days later it got worse and Kendra took him to the vet, picked up medicine and made sure he was well. When we came home he was back to normal. Kendra is always reliable she has never once cancelled and has actually gone out of her way to help us out on last minute trips or emergencies. Most importantly is how much my dog loves her! I have recommended Kendra to many friends and all have been thrilled with her services.

What a wonderful surprise to come across a gem like Veronica! It's clear that she loves dogs because my dog took to her immediately! She sends me photos of her visits with him, is reasonably priced, professional and friendly, all rolled together! She has done dog walking and care for me. I cannot ask for any more because I found the care that I needed for my dog in her!

Being new cat owners, my girlfriend and I were worried about having to find someone to sit our kitty while we were on vacation. All anxiety went away after our first meeting with Gail from Happy Whiskers Pet Sitting service. Gail assured us that she could provide quality care for our cat in the comfort of our home. She certainly delivered on this promise! In addition to the usual cat-sitting tasks performed each visit, she sent us daily messages on how our cat was doing along with pictures. Our cat is quite picky and usually hesitant to interact with strangers, but she warmed up instantly to Gail. My girlfriend and I were able to have a relaxing vacation away from home and came back to a very happy kitty. I'd strongly recommend her to any pet owners!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
