While I was writing my book, she was on hand to proof read in parts submitted to her. When she said that she was available, she really was available.

Super creative in finding ways to reach an audience and get them engaged. I write self-help books and Karly has really helped me start to build my audience and have them interact with my profiles on Social Media which was something I had trouble with before. She goes the extra mile to make sure that you're getting the most for your money and the results that you want. She is very open minded, understanding, and always looking for solutions to solve any media or marketing problem you have. Hire her before she's booked.

Michelle for the years I've known her has done a real good job with her work. I've read her book "The Temple" and it was a good read. The amount of personal contact I do have with her has always been professional and personally a good person to know. As for quality of work so far I haven't had any personal or professional problems, maybe tweaks here and there but nothing too drastic as she's a better 3D modeler than I am in some cases, so I would recommend her for a variety of positions consummate with her abilities, which are very good so far.

Doug helped me schedule an early evening shoot that was perfect. I could never have broken away from work during the week and have kids home all day on the weekend. This might seem like an odd perk, but his late afternoon to evening availability made my sessions possible. I found Doug through a simple Google search for pin-up photographers. I was overwhelmed, but found his website and liked the work (and know the town he photographed the fishing shack in, love Rockport). Emailed Doug to learn he has a disability and for some reason, I felt less intimidated as my cousin is in a wheelchair. I was able to bring a girlfriend for moral support and courage which was nice. She even helped Doug move a light stand and was involved in the shoot. We did some PG13 fun pin-up shoots that I plan on giving to my husband for his birthday as he has a book by an artist named Vargas that he loves. So, we took ideas from the book and made 5 8x11 prints and 1 "special" 16x20 print. Doug shot a nice head shot for my friend and gave me a print to give her. He let me bring some CDs I had of old 1950s music that was silly, but really fun too. Okay, the photographs, can't boast about myself but I will say, Doug artsy touches somehow made my pics look like they were photos from that time and I absolutely love the shots! I think I read another review who said she was going back now feeling less intimidated, well, me too! Doug's "studio" looks pretty basic, a setup in a a big room in a big house, I was expecting more um, stuff and props, etc. But once music was playing and lights were going off, it was cozy and fun Melissa

I have been working with Doris Troy since 2000. I am a writer. Doris has worked with me on feature stories, literary essays, short stories, and a novel. If I had my way, I wouldn't send an e-mail without her seeing it first. After all, Penguin chose her to edit Shakespeare -- and if you think you can do better than that, think again. She is not only on time, but early. She is brilliant. I see her as a writing partner, not just an editor. She is the kind of editor that isn't made anymore; she will make you look a hundred times smarter than you are.

Danek Designs produced a handsome table for the appendix of my forthcoming book in record time, adjusting it when I changed some of the material. The bid was concise and straightforward, the work was done quickly, and the results attractive.I would recommend John Danek as an excellent graphic designer and an agreeable contact to deal with.

I hired TZ&A Group to do a few illustrations on a book I was working on. I got to work with Tatyana. She was friendly, professional, willing to really listen, quick to reply and delivered beautiful, top quality work. It was great working with her.

I was drawn to ask Sara to edit my work because: (1) I liked the journal she ran and (2) I enjoy reading her own work. Initially, she edited two pieces for me and told me to go back to the drawing boards. I knew how to write “in scene” before I became a professional researcher. Years passed and I wanted to learn how to write creative nonfiction. My style tended to be more journalistic. Sara helped motivate me to get more consistently “in scene.” On those first two pieces, she could've done a simple line edit but, instead, she persuaded me that I needed to change wavelengths to explore the greater potential in both pieces. It took a while before I was ready to listen. When I asked her to review my next drafts and go another round, she willingly did, said I was nearly there, and asked questions and performed line edits that made them even better. Subsequently, she took on two more pieces, and helped make them even better, again by asking me questions that enabled me to see what work I still needed to do. With her assist, two of the four pieces have been published. More recently, she’s edited a dozen other pieces ranging from micro to full-length creative nonfiction. This has really gotten me over the hump in having the confidence to persist. Sara's smart, knows something about nearly everything, sensitive, knows her stuff, isn't afraid to say what needs to be said, and builds capabilities. I enjoy working with her and hope that, as demands on her time for editing and writing increase, she still has time for me.

I hired Christie to transform my elderly father's blog posts into a memoir and she did an outstanding job. She had a deft touch, superb copy-editing skills and the insight and intuition needed to keep my father's voice while smoothing out the rough spots. She also designed the book cover, found a publisher and got it done in time for my father's 85th birthday, when we had a launch party for "Skydiving into Medical School and Other Adventures," and we made a dying man extremely happy. The book would have been only an old man's dream if not for Christie.

Although my husband and I were working 60+ hours per week our business was not making money. Geoffrey asked to see our books, reviewed how much overhead we had, costs for materials and how much time went into an individual job. After analyzing the information he concluded that we were not charging enough money for our services and products. He suggested that we double our prices (which were way too low!). He was 100% on target and as he continued to monitor our business over the following years he has been and continues to be an invaluable asset to us and to the success of our small business. I have been the editor of an independent, literary press publishing fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry for the last 10 years. In that role, I've seen so many good books rejected because of issues that could have been solved with the help of an editor. My freelance book editing service is designed to help new and established authors solve these issues and realize their books' full potentials. With me as your editor, you get someone who is not only meticulous about grammar and punctuation, sentence structure and tone, character and plot development, but someone who is deeply devoted to the written word and to helping authors see their visions through. I am a writer too, so I also understand the highs and lows of the writing process and can share my techniques for pushing through moments of doubt and blocks. Humor, a friendly partnership, esoteric conversations about writing, take-home exercises, and honest criticism and feedback are all part of the package! Whether you are interested in self-publishing or are seeking representation, I know both publishing arenas quite well. When your book is ready, I can help you navigate these worlds to find the right fit. I also work with several book designers, so if you are self-pubishing, you may want to take advantage of their talents. I offer a variety of services: Manuscripts Critiques, Developmental Editing, Copyediting, and Writing Coaching. I look forward to hearing from you and learning more about your book!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

            • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
            • Strong writing skills.
            • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
            • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
            • Expertise in your target area.
            • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

            • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
            • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
            • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
            • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
