AA Tree and Shrub Service came out to look over job on first day requested quote from Thumbtack. We need overgrown pine trees and grove of maples trimmed back from house. Needed Japanese maple and red maple shaped and trimmed back from house. They made great suggestions and gave us a very reasonable quote; came out and did an EXCELLENT job; cleaned up and took away branches. We highly recommend AA Tree and Shrub Services and would use them again.

I highly recommend hiring this company...Within a week of the estimate Nature Bound was at my house cutting and trimming my trees - other tree cutters I contacted told me at least a month wait. They were very professional in all facets of the operation from being on time to explaining what they were doing to clean up. We are having them return in November to cut down 5 more trees. Good company to deal with.

Unbeatable price! Dan and his guys where friendly courteous and professional. We initially had Dan over for a leaf clean up estimate. While taking a closer look we noticed some dead trees carpenter ants or termites had devoured, and decided they should be removed. My hubby got carried away and decided we had too many thin but tall trees that weren't appealing. 30 to be exact. The price to remove them was unbeatable and Dan and his crew where available the very next day. They came and spent about 7 hours removing the trees. The job was completed and no more pointless trees in our yard. My only complaint is it was very messy and the yard now looks a mess, but thats not their fault I guess, it was just a messy job. Now I need a leaf/yard cleanup that fits the budget after the tree removal. Overall great job! Thanks Dan and crew!!

We had a 60’ oak tree that snapped in half and was left hanging on another tree. David cut hanging branches and carefully rigged a large section so it could be safely lowered to the ground to avoid damage to stairs below. I’m very satisfied with his work and highly recommend his services.

MSF Landscapes recently reconstructed our barren city backyard into a shade garden paradise. Initially they leveled the backyard then laid down the hardscape. This was followed by plantings, installation of a drip irrigation/sprinkler system, arbor (with natural log posts) and mulching of the garden. In total they did everything, no sub contractors necessary with this company. Mark was great to work with very responsive and always pleasant. His mason/project manager, Jay, was fantastic and a very talented worker. He was also amenable to subtle change and a pleasure to work with. The rest of his crew was very professional and a pleasure to have around. His crew went so far as to mulch our front beds when they happened to have extra mulch after completion of the backyard which was very much appreciated. In conclusion, the job was very high quality and well done. We are exceptionally pleased with the job. I will post

Eric was professional and prompt with providing a quote and then completing the job. He created a beautiful bed on my front lawn using some existing shrubs and trees I already had to tie everything together. He edged all of my flower beds and property, it looks fantastic. He also suggested moving some perennials in my garden which were suffering due to their location. Overall, I am very pleased with Eric's work, I would recommend him.

Jim was great! He came out right on time and even though the job was bigger than expected (I didn't do a great job describing it), he took it on no problem. It was splitting large logs fro a tree we had taken down and hauling away. Will most certainly be hiring Jim going forward. Thank you, Jim!

I can only rate Bello Jardin Tree Service for the following - Professional, they were very responsive and with great follow-up, They were very punctual for coming and reviewing the property for the quote. Unfortunately. we had changed the project after the walkthru to a much larger and more extensive project and they did not have the larger equipment available to complete the job. In the future, I would definitely call them again and use them for smaller tree removal projects.

I had 5 pine trees removed and another 10 trimmed. Green World Landscaping did exactly what I asked. JR climbed each tree as I had no access for a bucket truck. I've already contacted him for another full day of work.

John did exactly what I asked to be completed in trimming bushes and removing some small trees in my yard. He is very polite and professional and he introduced his worker to me as soon as he arrived. Next we went over the details to make sure everything was what I originally wanted to be done. Now my walk-way and stairs looks so much better, and the trees he removed really opened up space in my yard to plant some hydrangeas. I could not have been more pleased at the work they did in a very efficient way and the clean up process was great! They do not waste time and they worked very hard the whole time they were here! *Very refreshing to see a young businessman excited about his relatively new company, and I am so glad that I selected him to do the job. I will certainly have him back!

Arbor CPR was great. Hired them to removed 2 huge holly bushes (trees?) They came within a couple days of me reaching out. Notified me that he was running an hr late but I didn’t mind. Ended up charging us less than the original estimate even though we added something for him to do. He said removal was easier than he anticipated! Now, that is an honorable person. He didn’t have to tell us that and charged what he quoted plus more for the extra we asked for! And he also moved and cut some branches we have in a pile in our yard from the last storm...just to be nice. I definitely recommend Arbor CPR!

There's a big pine tree (over 50ft high) in our yard damaged in last snow storm, we wanted to have it removed ASAP. It's not an easy task not only because of the height of the tree, but also because it's right near the power line and a main road. We had several quotes on thumbtack, Mr. Christopher Workman explained to us that they will climb up the tree and cut it down piece by piece from the top, which is the best way of removing this tree with minimum impact on nearby trees and power line. Their price is reasonable too. Mr. Christopher Workman and his colleague arrived in early morning on last Sunday, it took them less than an hour to cut the whole tree down. They then cut the trunk into pieces, which will be picked up and chipped by Mr. Christopher Workman in next week. I highly recommend Mr. Christopher Workman, he does it right.

I am exceptionally satisfied with Timberwolf Tree Services work. I hired Jason and team to remove a tree hanging over my house as well as to trim trees along the power wires running along my driveway. Jason and team are professionals and completed the work agreed upon in a timely fashion. I recommend Timberwolf to all and I will hire Timberwolf for future tree removal/trimming.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
