Three months ago, I knew that I wanted to make a career transition but didn't know how to achieve that goal. I felt overwhelmed and was spinning my wheels. Enter Deb Goldstein. After just 1 hour of meeting with Deb, she was serving up gobs of value! Later she sent detailed notes with homework assignments we'd discussed to help me inch closer to my goal. Our sessions continued in this pattern for the next 2 months and I followed Deb's guidance after each time we met. What happened next surprised me. I received a better opportunity than the type I was originally targeting, a job that was more aligned with my long term goals. Had I even received an intermediate job offer that quickly, I would have been thrilled, but the offer I got exceeded my expectations. I wouldn't have received such a gift without learning and following Deb's skilled guidance. I will never approach a future job search the same way again. Deb is a gifted investigator, career therapist, cheerleader, and muse in a single package. She will shepherd you through her organized, thoughtful process, always going at your pace. Deb digs deep with her questions and helps you discover what you want from your career and how to craft your personal brand. She does all of this without telling you what she thinks you want, empowering you to own the process and try new things. Deb will open your mind to a better way of job searching and career building. I will gladly hire Deb again if I need career advice in the future.

I met with Jim for two sessions and his advice was just what I needed. Jim has an amazing gift. He was able to gather the information about my career and personal relationships and present a new approach for me to overcome obstacles. It was worth every minute and his rate is very fair. I recommend him to anyone who is faced with life's challenges and needs more than a friend's point of you or a therapist's ear. Jim helped me with an action plan that really paid off.

Jason has been my personal trainer since March 2011. When I met Jason four years ago, I was suffering from a neck injury, problems with balance (I fell all the time) and was overweight. I had been to several doctors and physical therapists with limited results. The first time I met Jason, he told me he could help correct my neck issues. I said, "If you can do that, then sign me up!" He did wonders for my neck (I can now sleep at night!), balance (I don't fall anymore) and I also lost 35 pounds in less than six months (and significantly reduced my body fat) . He has superior knowledge and knew exactly what my problems were and how to help correct them. Jason is very personable and extremely supportive. I highly recommend Jason as a Personal Trainer- no matter what age bracket or health condition you're in. Susan, 56 years young!

Marlen is an outstanding massage therapist whom I have known for several years. From playing tennis, I had extreme tightness in my hips and IT band and Marlen worked hard to release the tightness in those muscles so I could continue playing. Marlen kept me on the courts! She asks your areas of concern and concentrates on those ~ so many therapists decide what you need without listening to your concerns. I would highly recommend Marlen to anyone who wants improved health and fitness.

I highly recommend Victoria, not only as a personal trainer but also as a health coach. She was able to help me build strength, increase my flexibily, and introduce me to yoga and the amazing benefits it creates for my body. Every workout we did together was different and exciting. She incorporates boxing, sprinting, and plyometrics. I am a physical therapist and looking for motivation- I got that and MORE from Victoria. Not to mention, her personality is amazing! She is very supportive and positive but she will also push you as hard as you want to be pushed! Love her!

I came to Chavi at a time when I had severe anxiety. Her personalized treatment did wonders for me. Coming from India, she is the real deal--she knows the history, technique, breathing, mantras, and how to serve your body. As a choreographer, dancer, physical therapist, and yoga practitioner, there is no better teacher in Boston.

About two months away from our wedding day in 2015, my wife (fiancée at that time) and I were grateful to be introduced to Alain and Danielle by a church friend as our wedding counselor. They are a wonderful couple most importantly; because, their teaching are very transparent and practical. It is obvious that Alain and Danielle are Men and woman of God. During the weekly counseling sessions, every time we walked out of the office, Nephthalie and I have learned so much; our perception of relationship specifically in marriage was revealed. Now, it has been seven months since Nephthalie and I got married. We applied those principle on a daily basis. The sessions were very significant. From the teaching received, we have the magic key needed to solve any problem for a successful marriage. We highly recommend them if you are looking for a marital or relationship counselor.

Wendy has been a tremendous support for me in coming to terms with my part in having a marriage I don't want while showing me the simple ways to having a marriage I do want. She's practical and insightful, using humor and example to get powerful points across. The changes are happening and I am more hopeful and peaceful than ever before.

I saw Patrick for a prenatal sports massage as I was experiencing some lower back and hip pain. Not only did he make me feel incredibly comfortable, but his knowledge was far superior than any therapist I have been to before. He was mindful of my positioning and communicated with me throughout. He was able to target areas I didn't think would be possible to feel until after delivery!! Amazing. Following my session, he also recommended exercises to work on my hip stability and mobility that has helped keep the pain to a minimum. I will definitely be going back for another sports massage and will schedule a coaching session as well! He is THE best in the area, by far.

Testimonial: Individual Therapy A bit less than a year ago, following a series of unfortunate events in my life, I had reached a really low point. Emotionally, mentally and physically drained, I knew that I needed to find the strength to continue living, and out of sheer desperation, I finally reached out to Rita, It was the best decision I ever made. Over the past 10 months, she has helped me experience growth that for me was unimaginable. In a loving and compassionate manner, she has helped me to identify both the destructive behavior patterns that led to my subsequent bouts of depression as well as the traumatic events and family history that contributed to the creation of these destructive patterns. Most importantly, she has taught me how to change these destructive patterns and replace them with positive, healthy, self-affirming ones. In less than a year, Rita has positively influenced almost every aspect of my life. I am learning to identify and arrest addictive behaviors, replace negative thought patterns with positive self-talk and eliminate unhealthy behaviors and toxic people from my life. I am practicing self-love and becoming my “best self.” As a result, my marriage and family relationships have improved and my career continues to blossom. I have lost over 45 pounds and I am finally learning what it means to be truly happy, healthy and whole -- mind, body and spirit. I am learning to clearly identify my goals and attain them. I totally attribute my growth to working with Rita. There is an old saying: “The sick mind doesn’t know that it’s sick.” Whether it is in your personal or professional life, Rita's incredible talent lies in her ability to assist you with identifying (and sometimes just acknowledging) the source of your pain or whatever it is that may be holding you back. More importantly, she accompanies you on the path of self-healing, and provides the tools necessary to complete the journey. That is Rita’s gift to her clients. It is a gift that is priceless. --Anonymous in Massachusetts

I sought out Kamela for support during a huge physical and emotional transition (pregnancy!). I was searching out providers online, with an open ear for bodywork or talk therapy but a preference for someone who could do integrative body/mind work. I have experience with various kinds of bodywork (from acupuncture to chraniosacral therapies to massage) as well as with talk therapy (and am myself a therapist). Kamela stood out as someone who understood the complexities of bodies in relationship, of communication, and of tuning in. She has not disappointed on any of these counts. Her work has impressed me with its depth and its subtlety. A typical session involves coming in, grounding in the space, then checking in verbally for 10-15 minutes (sometimes longer). We then move to the table, where she uses very subtle adjustments and movements (with my clothes on) to help me connect to my physical self. I tend to disconnect from my body, and she has wonderful and deceptively simple questions to help me return. My favorite moments are those when she uses the body as a metaphor, and invites me to reflect on a phrase about my body I have just said (for example, "that leg feels like it's going in all different directions"). Often these moments open big wells of emotion I had not been aware of, and allow me some release. Kamela has a way of connecting with your energy that is very calm and powerful. I am not super comfortable with physical or vocal expressions, and she doesn't push me to do go too far outside my comfort zone. However, I get the sense that she has a range of abilities and approaches that could vary greatly depending on person and preference. She works out of her home, which has caused no problems whatsoever (I rarely see anyone but her when I arrive or leave). The space is comfortable and cozy. Her prices are very reasonable, particularly if you take advantage of her package deals. Highly recommended.

After a difficult day of work I was ready to cancel my appointment because I was feeling so low. After my massage I was rejuvinated, smiling and relaxed. My sore muscles were more flexible and I felt so much better. I came in allmost in tears. I left with a giant smile. I would recommend Healing Hands to those hard working people who find themselves in need of reenergizing. Ann M., RN

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
