As everyone knows, guests always remember the meal at a wedding. Our wedding meal was over the top outstanding. Jen and her fantastic team couldn't have been any more efficient, professional, engaging and in a word "perfect". We would highly recommend them. We were so fortunate that she was available to cater this event for us, a true blessing.

Sara and her staff did an absolutely fantastic job catering our wedding in late July, 2016. The event was at a small horse farm in Rehoboth, MA, and Sara planned a menu that perfectly reflected the verdant, warm and playful atmosphere of the venue. Throughout the planning process, she and her staff were swift to respond to any questions we had and were very transparent about all of the costs involved. They were incredibly friendly and professional, reflecting a true pride in their work. The event itself went flawlessly and all the guests we talked to (we had about 150) really enjoyed their meals and the buffet service was well run. In short, the food was excellent and the customer service, friendliness and overall professionalism were superb. I highly recommend hiring Sara and her crew to cater any special event!

I truly cannot say thank you enough to the team at Cristo’s Kitchen for catering my wedding. They were friendly and supportive in putting together a menu. So easy to work with. On the day of the event they were on-time, anticipated the needs of the guests, created a beautiful spread, and served some tremendous food. All of our guests were so blown away by how wonderful the food was and by the service they received from the wait staff. Not to mention, the pricing was very affordable. I would recommend Cristo’s Kitchen 100% and give 5 stars on all levels!

I met Daniel for catering for my wedding. He was the only caterer who came to my venue right off the bat to view how everything would work. He also came to my home and put together a fabulous tasting with enough leftovers for us to enjoy in days after. Daniel was very willing to work with in our budget and was very professional, warm and friendly I would highly recommend Daniel and will be contacting him for any future altering needs.

Jennifer was our day of coordinator for our May 30th, 2015 wedding. In the month leading up to the wedding she helped me stay focused and on task. She kept all the vendors in the loop and went above and beyond to make sure I was prepared for the most amazing day of my life. I do not know how I could have done it without her and Shannon. Both these women encouraged my vision and worked tirelessly to ensure my dream wedding came to fruition. I was impressed by the teams' high level of professionalism and creative mindset. She gave me crucial tips and pointers on how to improve the quality reception. Jennifer was always on time and settled for nothing but quality performance and service from all the vendors involved. I would recommend Jennifer to anyone and everyone 10 times over. Hiring Jennifer was the best decision I made during my wedding planning process I wish I found her and brought her on earlier. If you are looking for a qualified professional who will have your best interest in mind look no further. You will find this and more in Jennifer and her team.

John and his team were very professional!! They performed duties beyond their scope because my event planner wasn't doing her job. They all-in-all were instrumental at making sure my guests, myself and husband were well taken care of, from bringing water and a platter of food out to us when pictures were being taken, communicating with our DJ in a professional manner which in turn prompted my DJ to make a public announcement on how spectacular J & L Catering was. If I hadn't mentioned, the food was fantastic. I had great reviews from my family and friends for days/weeks. I would whole heartedly recommend John of J & L Caterers for all weddings.

We felt imediately comfortable having Julie in our home. She was professional, friendly, efficient and an excellent cook. Enjoyed every morsel she prepared for the tasting prior to our upcoming wedding. We ended up selecting the same menu items we tried at the tasting and are looking forward to seeing Julie again on our wedding day.

William and his team catered our wedding of about 100 people and I would highly reccomend him! William truly went above and beyond both with his amazing food and constantly offering to help make things easier on us as we got closer to our wedding. The food and presentation was absolutely amazing! Even our vendors who have eaten at countless weddings raved about the food. William also surprised us with some special treats for my husband and his groomsmen and a great display for our late night pretzel bar. William was so much fun and easy to work with and I really can't say enough about how delicious the food was!

I found Malone Catering on Thumbtack while assisting my son to find a caterer for his wedding. When I first saw the menus and prices I really thought I had to be misunderstanding, His prices are so reasonable that I could not believe he was in any way related to other wedding caterers. It seems that all wedding services have a 4X markup and we really needed to stay within a very frugal budget. I called Chef Marty and found him to be very easy to work with and very accommodating and I sent his info to my son immediately. The wedding last Sunday at Camp Kiwanee was beautiful and the guests raved about the delicious food. We had requested a buffet style and Marty and his staff did the serving. Absolutely wonderful. And I cannot say enough about his staff. They were so unobtrusive I never noticed them clearing after dinner but they did an incredible job. And every one of them was friendly and helpful and seemed happy to be there. I know my son and is new wife were extremely pleased with Malone Catering. We will not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a quality caterer at a reasonable price.

Shamia provided a delicious buffet for my son's wedding brunch for 15 people. She even took the time to transfer additional food onto her serving platters to make everything look just right. People loved the food, which included beef tenderloin with horseradish sauce, an arugula, goat cheese and pear salad, a roasted sweet potato and mango salad, two kinds of delicious frittatas (which the bride said were the best she had ever tasted), and potatoes au gratin. She also prepared a two-layer green-tea cake with buttercream and coconut frosting that was perfection. She brought a lovely server, Paula, with her to handle all the details of prepping, keeping things fresh, and cleaning up. We had mountains of leftovers, and everyone was delighted.

We had an Indian fusion wedding last weekend at an off-site venue, and Simply Elegant Catering did a fantastic job. We originally contacted SEC to provide full service catering and American style food, with the intent of having another restaurant provide Indian food. However, SEC’s chef offered to make the Indian food for our tasting, and it was delicious. As a result, SEC caterered both style menus. They also worked with us to develop a mostly vegetarian menu to meet the needs of the groom and many of our guests. A few of our guests actually commented that it was the best wedding food they’ve ever had. Sam of SEC was very helpful and responsive, and his entire staff seemed eager to work with us to help make our event run smoothly and meet our wishes. And SEC’s services were very reasonably priced. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about SEC, and would recommend them to anyone looking for delicious food with friendly service.

There aren't enough stars in the land of internet rating to give to Tony and his team at Ambrosia Events & Catering. I hired Tony to cater a client's wedding. From the very start, Tony listened to the client's needs, worked with me to create a proposal that not only impressed the clients but also excited (yes, excited) about their wedding menu. Being an event planner with clients who were very much making last minute decisions, and a venue with peculiar and strict rules, I cannot express how much I appreciated Tony's quick response and excellent communication, as well as his professional experience and advice. Tony never seemed overwhelmed or frustrated, and he always had a reasonable solution. Tony paid attention to every detail that we had planned into the wedding and styled his presentation to complement the linen selections and overall feel of the wedding. My only wish is that I could get all my clients to hire Ambrosia Events & Catering.

Robert and the crew at Organic Garden did a great job of catering my wedding in August 2012. My husband wanted a strictly vegetarian wedding, but we wanted the food to appeal to everybody who may not be used to a vegetarian diet. The food was festive, beautiful, and tasty. The service was great. Everyone remarked that they felt like they were somewhere in Europe, enjoying each course very slowly and we lots of mingling and dancing in between each dish. Thank you so much.

These guys catered our wedding and did a fantastic job. I still receive comments from wedding attendees about the food. Not only was the food excellent, but their professionalism and attention to detail far exceeded our expectations.

I hired Sarah for my wedding weekend. She and her crew were absolutely phenomenal! They came and stayed with us the whole weekend. They served our rehearsal dinner, breakfast, and the wedding dinner. We spoke months before the wedding and she really took the time to understand the types of food we wanted, our concerns, and what we wanted the experience to be like for ourselves and our guests. We gave her a budget that she was able to keep well under, but still give us everything we wanted! Every step of the process couldn't have gone any better. Sarah was a great listener, very calm, kind, and knowledgeable. Her food was top notch as well as her servers! I can't think of how it could have been any better. I was really lucky to have had her. All of my guests raved about the food. I would recommend her to anyone who wants a calm, kind, and stressfree process with amazing food. I have recommended her to all of my friends and wouldn't hesitate to use her in the future.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
