I would highly recommend Laura from DCN Design for any interior design work you have. From our first communication she has been professional, knowledgeable and very enthusiastic in all aspects of helping me design my space. She was quick to pick up on exactly what I was envisioning for my space, even when I couldn't explain exactly what I was looking for.. and her vision did not disappoint during our presentation!! Her ideas were spot on! Making sure her clients are happy with all design ideas really seems to be her top priority. I cannot wait to see everything come together and I look forward to working with her in the future on my upcoming projects!

When starting our plans for redecorating, it was overwhelming. Then, Sheri to the rescue. Sheri made a Three Phase Plan which included: design for changing out countertops, flooring, fireplace, doors, lighting, etc.; a Resale Concept and an Overall Projects Objectives with suggested time line to help stay focused. From chaos to calm, that is the plan. Thank you Sheri Giancarlo! Kindly, Margaret Erickson

Lina did a great job offering full service solutions for our kitchen and dining room remodeling. At the 2nd meeting she had prepared detailed, professionally produced schematics and diagrams showing how the rooms would look. She also provided excellent brochures for fixtures, flooring, and lighting. My wife and I were thrilled with the outcome and would highly recommend Lina for any interior home projects requiring the services of a design architect.

It was a genuine pleasure working with Juliana in the context of my research project on collaborative interior design in virtual reality. She has a vibrant and playful aesthetic, and a kind, gentle way of working with people. I was very impressed at her ability and willingness to roll with all of the unexpected twists and turns that a research project inevitably brings. She was asked to interact with new and unfamiliar technology; we asked her to improvise a style of client interaction appropriate to our virtual reality environment; and she helped to suggest and carry out appropriate example tasks. As part of the work, she interacted with at least ten other people, who were role playing as clients in the virtual environment. She was able to engage with each person, matching their style of communication and understanding their preferences. Throughout all of this, she remained cheerful, energetic, and warm. All of this work happened over several sessions, and required a high level of commitment on her part. I am confident that she treats every client with the same level of attention and dedication as she did me. I am truly grateful to her for her contributions to the work, and am thankful for the opportunity my team had to work with her.

We asked Sarah to come to our place of business and provide design for a very historic building. Sarah was professional, resourceful and was able to guide us with choices that resulted in a beautiful and grand entrance to our foyer and window treatments in our library and large tv room that were both functional, long-wearing and eye-catching. Sarah was able to connect us with vendors that worked within our budget and was able to communicate our needs with these vendors to get us the end result we desired. Working with the Lovely Locale (Sarah) was just that, LOVELY.

I enjoyed meeting and working with Lauren. She had great color ideas for the rooms I am doing work in. She did say she would send me the colors she picked via email sine she did not write them down. I'm still waiting for them. All went very well.

My husband and I are nearing the completion of a new home from the ground up. I recently hired Melissa to help me with paint selections. I was also in the process of selecting tile for the bathrooms and mudroom when we started working together. Fortunately I got her input before making any final decisions. My initial choices would have been a mistake. With Melissa's help and guidance, I selected tile and paint colors that are current and stylish, all of which will ultimately enhance both the aesthetic and monetary value of my home. My only regret is not hiring Melissa earlier on during the planning stages because I did make some costly mistakes. She is talented and her pricing is very reasonable. As I said to my builder, she was worth every penny. He was thrilled because in assisting me with decisions, she helped move the construction process along. She also spent quite a bit of time with me via email, phone and text for which she does not charge. I give her 5 stars!!

Rauza designed my apartment and did an amazing job. In total it took about three months and in that time she achieved a complete transformation of my apartment. I had very few ideas but Rauza took them and formed them into a living space that meets all my needs and also reflects my personality. The colors, the furniture and the lighting all work together perfectly. I could not be more pleased and I highly recommend her for any project. She works very hard for her client, gives excellent service and great value.

My experience with Schickel Interiors was absolutely amazing. This was my first time working with a professional and I really needed help :). I contacted the team at Schickel to help with my living room and bedroom in my new apartment. The response almost instant when I first contacted them! Hannah did a great job of asking me questions and showing me sample, giving me the options I needed to make sure the rooms fit to my personality and my liking. We made changes and adjustments throughout the process and Hannah was always punctual and respectful - the team is really easy to communicate with. Another note; I had a pretty small timeline to work with and the team really pushed to make my dream a reality in such a small amount of time. I never thought I'd say this but...I can't wait to move again so that Schickel Interiors can design and implement my new space :)

    About

Using a down-to-earth collaborative approach, I work with my clients to translate feelings and ideas into tangible schemes that combine a wide array of colors, patterns and styles. I handle all assets of interior design -- with a masters heavily influenced by interior architecture, I can work with contractors during renovations or work with an existing space to produce the best flow. From soup to nuts, ceilings to windows to floors, I help my clients produce homes that feel like beautiful havens. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this profession is working with a client, working together as a team. Most people know what they want, they just have trouble articulating it. So my job is to understand their thoughts and preferences then see how we can express that in a way that complements their tastes and lifestyle, and fits their budget. And the results are always exhilarating, like putting together a really pretty puzzle.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
