Recently I hired Ken to develop a resume that will allow me to position myself for greater opportunities. Not only was Ken able to showcase my skills, but he also served as a career coach. I believe his help and guidance will help me land the right opportunity in my field of expertise. I would highly recommend Ken to anyone looking for guidance.

Deb is an exceptional career coach (and exceptional human being). When I was out of work and professionally disoriented, Deb came to the rescue. By engaging me in thoughtful discussion of my core values, skills and experience, she guided me to reformulate my personal narrative and helped me articulate my professional goals. In supporting me in the development and implementation of customized job-search strategies, I found the confidence and determination to find the job I truly wanted. She was the mirror I needed to discover who I wanted to become. I could not recommend her more highly.

I hired Jane as a Life Coach because I am going through a life transition and seeking a new path that reflects the growth I have managed over the last several. I spent many years in an emotionally abusive marriage where my feelings were dismissed, my dreams squelched and my intellect ridiculed. As a single parent in the ten years between now and then, I had little time to pursue dreams or new careers, but I was away from the bullying and able to finally begin to blossom and to value myself. Now my children are grown and I'm ready to take the next step, but I realized that I could not do it alone. The conditioning was still too strong. I wanted someone to help, to bounce things off of, to give me perspective and to keep me from falling into ambivalence and indecision in the face of that inner critic. Jane has been that person. She has a wonderful combination of kindness and straightforwardness. She spent our first session just listening, giving her full attention to where I had been and where I was at. The validation of that alone, was worth gold to me. She has the ability to listen in a way that is deep and that helps you hear yourself, and trust yourself. We are still working towards my goals, which she is helping me identify and stay true to. The more I work with her the more solid and confident I become in my dreams and the quieter that echo of the bully becomes. I highly recommend Jane for anybody who is in a transition period of their life--especially if you have been the victim of abuse--and is looking for someone who can provide support, structure and firm but gentle guidance. She never, never tells you what to believe or who you are or what you want. She helps you find your own way there.

Jim is a wonderful coach! I highly recommend him as he takes the time to listen to you and he really cares about your outcome- it shows that he is passionate about his work! He and I have had about 5 sessions so far and he is helping me see more clearly what I want from my life and work. It's a process, and I sometimes feel all over the place- but Jim can really get to the core and ask you, "When you get this (and you will!) do you really want it, and why?" So success is a reality, and I feel I'm taking charge of my life, career and happiness! I'm thankful to have found such a great life coach in Jim, he's professional yet down to earth and I look forward to our next session!

Very grateful to have been given Drew as my coach. He has a way of getting information across so that you understand it. He is very patient; I know I'm not the first person he's explained all this to, yet he acts like it :-) His energy is positive, yet mellow. Really glad to be a part of his team, and I know that I will owe my success to him. Thanks for being awesome Drew!!

I had interviewed two other fitness coaches before Gena and what I loved about Gena from the start was her willingness to listen and customize a plan based on my personal needs, circumstances and abilities. She coaches, encourages, checks in and keeps the experience positive providing the little extra push needed to stay focused on fitness goals that can easily be compromised with a busy to-do list.

It was very helpful working with Wendy on issues around my marriage. She taught us tools about effective listening and actually stayed with us for 4 hours until we were comfortable with the technique and felt we had resolved the issue(s) at the time. Wendy is very clear, concise and compassionate as a coach and we learned a lot.. She definitely went above and beyond our expectations. The quality of her work was excellent. I don't have anything to say that would have made it better next time. I want her back to teach in the same way she did before. A real gem of a coach!

My coaching sessions started with Matt when I was thinking about going back to school for a degree in cello performance. I took a look at the tuition prices at all the nearby conservatories and realized I could save many thousands of dollars by putting together my own educational program. I asked Matt to help me with this process, and he has been awesome. He has provided friendly but firm encouragement through the whole process of clarifying my goals, setting my priorities, and taking specific steps towards accomplishing what I want to accomplish. I have never felt so disciplined and motivated about my cello playing, and it feels great. I can’t recommend Matt enough.

I am only a week in with working with Jeremy and have already felt a difference. The most impressive change I have noticed are my habits. Instead of sitting on the couch for hours on end and snacking, I will get up, do some cardio, eat some dinner and watch ONE episode of my favorite show. I also have had much more energy where getting up in the morning doesn't seem like an impossible task. Although I am probably in the worst shape of my life right now, I am excited to get "it back." I am looking forward to long runs this fall, developing a yoga routine, becoming stronger in the weight room and more importantly create and maintain a fundamental nutrition plan that I can carry for the rest of my life.

I motivate others to be the best they can be. I give life tools and skills to cope with loss and suffering, bullying and stressful situations to help the cope in a positive way. The three main goals I want someone to learn about themselves is what I learned from life, such as the following: * Treat others how you want to be treated * Love yourself * Accept your erroneous zones and learn from them and move forward in life The main idea of Mathenia's Positive Corner is sometimes life will bring you to a halt, and you have to be the one to say "enough is enough" to truly make a positive change in your life.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

      • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
      • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
      • Defining your career goals
      • Creating a plan for job searching
      • Improving networking strategies and skills
      • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
      • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
      • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

      Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

      • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
      • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
      • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
      • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
      • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
      • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
      • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

      What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
