I have used Alvin Smithson's services for over five years as a piano tuner, teacher and performer. I am always impressed with his skills, artistry and professionalism. Alvin first came to tune my 100-years old Steinway after it had been neglected for a number of years. He first examined the instrument, diagnosed what needed to be done and then proceeded with his expert tuning. Immediately after he was done and started playing, I was amazed at how good the piano sounded. Alvin explained that with a piano that hasn't been tuned or played in so many years, it will take some time to achieve its best form and sound for which it was built. A short time after, my wife started taking piano lessons from Alvin and as she started gaining proficiency in playing under his guidance, the piano itself gained a rich pleasing sound. Alvin paid close attention and adjusted notes or did a full tuning whenever needed. He also took the time to clean the strings and do minor technical adjustments. When a string needed to be replaced, Alvin recommended a technician from a highly reputable company. Overall, we owe it to his expertise to have the wonderful old piano do what it was built for by the Steinway masters. I should also mention that I heard some great musicians at venues where Alvin is the regular piano tuner. People who visit our house and hear our piano, or play it themselves, always compliment its sound. But the best comes when Alvin himself sits at the keyboard, whether at our house, at a social function or performing in the theater, it's such a joy to hear him play some great classical pieces as well as his own wonderful compositions. He is truly a very talented, sensitive and highly knowledgeable artist. And such a pleasant person, too. My wife and I feel fortunate to have Alvin give us the best piano sound to enjoy live music in our home. I would recommend him to anyone as piano tuner, teacher and overall musician.

Alvin was great. We loved listening to him work and were treated to a couple songs at the end! Would not hesitate to work with him again for our next tuning.

Debbie is incredible. Her teaching methods may be unorthodox, but they are 100% effective. I had a 3 month deadline to work with, and in that timeframe Debbie completely turned my voice around, helped me find my voice, and taught me how to sing pain free. I would recommend her to anyone seeking who wanted to learn anything about singing, vocal performance, pedagogy, etc. She's a master of breath support, vowel formulation, intonation, and so many other things. She's simply incredible and it's impossible not to love her. 100% recommended.

I have taken voice lessons before, however, never enjoyed the experience as I have with Momma Debbie Kirkland. Momma Debbie has a warm, fun, exciting, inviting, loving, motherly and caring spirit. She is an awesome teacher and singer. I felt major improvements in my breathing and voice dynamics. It has truly been a life changing experience that I will treasure forever and ever. Tona is absolutely awesome - she made me feel very comfortable with our trial lesson and so I bought the 6 pack of lessons. I'm intimately familiar with music as I used to play and sing way back when also going to school for vocal performance. But, I hadn't done it in a long while and wanted to get back into music. She's been extremely patient with my rustiness (even when I'm not with myself) and I really appreciate that. As an adult getting back into music with the violin I appreciate her honesty, patience, professionalism, response time and her being on time for our lessons.

Tona Brown is an excellent musician and violin instructor. She's pleasant and encouraging, my daughter, who is an advanced student, enjoys Tona and looks forward to the lessons. Tona recognizes my daughter's abilities and tailors the lessons to enhance and further develop them. She is challenging my daughter with advanced concepts and techniques that have helped my daughter grow as a violinist in the short time she's been with her (3 lessons). I'm so glad we found Tona!

Don is a very accomplished guitarist with a wealth of knowledge. It shows that he is eager to impart his knowledge. I had my first lesson with him today and I learned so much. He incorporates music theory in to his lessons to show us why things are played the way they are and where they originated from. He was patient and very encouraging. His soloing skills are phenomenal and I am excited to learn from him. I highly recommend him to musicians of all levels. He is now my jazz guitar guru! Hail to the Guitar Chief Don!

Mr. Walls is an enthusiastic and patient teacher. As a choir member at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton for the past fifteen years, I have been able to sing liturgical music, and participate with other choirs in singing more complex pieces of music, such as requiems and compositions for rites of the church and special occasions. Our choir has sung in various languages, and joined other choirs in ecumenical choir fests. Mr. Walls has studied music composition, conducting, and history, and is an accomplished musician on several instruments, including the piano, organ, and guitar. He has several years teaching experience in the U.S. and abroad. I would say Mr. Walls' expertise and talent are second to none.

Mr. Walls is a five-star outstanding music teacher and mentor. He worked with my daughter as she practiced for an important audition, and in short time there was a noticeable improvement in her playing (trombone); it was deeper, richer sounding, and she was much more confident. Mr. Walls works well with people of all ages, he really believes in his students and those he mentors, he challenges them, but at the same time he is patient with them. His love for all things music related is apparent. He is a teacher I'm sure will make a different with whomever is lucky enough to be under his instruction.

Singing in church choirs has been a wonderful outlet and enabled me to find a community as I moved every few years to different parts of the globe. Finally putting down roots, I wanted to find a voice coach who would help me improve breath control, strengthen the range of my voice, and improve the overall quality of my singing. I am blessed to have found Keely Bosworth Borland, a gifted soprano and performer. Keely has been the perfect coach for me. She has a unique ability to both nurture and push me. Keely has identified and helped me work on my breath control. She has used a wide variety of music to foster my confidence while stretching my vocal range. Her lessons include a selection of vocal warm-ups and breathing exercises each week that compliment the music we sing. I have found that recording her lessons and rehearsing them between lessons to be of great help. I highly recommend Keely to anyone looking for a voice coach from the novice to the serious performer.

Craig P.

Our daughter, 13, has been taking voice lessons with Keely for almost a year, and has had a terrific experience. Keely has taken the time to get to know our daughter, her strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, and she makes effective use of the lesson time, finding music our daughter enjoys (musical theater), as well as challenging her with music she might not otherwise have been exposed to. Keely is very encouraging, abounding in patience, and a lot of fun to work with. Our daughter loves her lessons!

I studied voice with Dorothy Miller for over four years, and I loved every lesson I had with her! I began taking voice lessons in eighth grade because I loved musical theater, but I could not sing. I was absolutely tone-deaf and I couldn't even read music. When I first began with Dorothy, she gave me nothing but continuous encouragement and support, teaching me the most basic techniques necessary for singing. As I progressed through the years, I not only overcame my tone-deafness but actually became a good singer. She helped me to expand my range by over an octave, adding notes to the top and bottom of my range. I now have a range of nearly three octaves when I began barely able to sing an octave scale. In addition to voice, Dorothy also helped me prepare for various auditions as well as taught me to read music and some basic music theory. She also has experience with acting, especially with musical theater, so some of my lessons were dedicated specifically to enhancing my acting skills, both with and without music. Over the years, I began to develop a friendship with Dorothy because she really takes time to get to know her students on a personal level and always loves to sit and chat before and after her lessons. She always made me laugh and was very kind. I never left a voice lesson without a smile on my face, and I always looked forward to returning the following week. I loved studying under Dorothy so much that I recommended her to four of my best friends, who also took lessons with her for multiple years. I now am in my second year of college and no longer am able to take lessons with Dorothy anymore. However, I still make it a point to catch up with her whenever I have a break to talk about how my semester has been, and it is like I never left. I would give Dorothy Miller Vocal Studio 10/5 stars if I could because she is absolutely phenomenal, and I would recommend her to anyone in a heartbeat. I am very lucky to have been her student, and I wouldn't be where I am today without her.

The vocal technique that I learned from Dorothy Miller completely transformed my voice and my career as a singer. Dorothy’s teaching focuses on the implications of classical, consistent technique within all different styles of music. Voice lessons with Dorothy combine this teaching of safe, anchored singing while exploring the exciting world of performance and audition repertoire. For me, I started working with Dorothy at the age of 12. I had been singing my whole life, but my throat was constantly sore and I had no access to higher ranges. In my 6 years of study with her, I was able to expand my range and vocal versatility, lay down a firm technique and develop a passion for new types of music. Dorothy works to develop an authentic, individual relationship with each student, and over the years I can genuinely say she has become like a second mother to me. She additionally helped me to navigate and prepare for the college audition process, and I completely credit her in my acceptance to the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University!

Annie was one of the kindest teachers I've ever worked with, giving me constructive criticism in a positive way instead of trying to "scare" me into doing it better or differently. She was always open to working on new repertoire and gave me some good suggestions from her own life experience. She knew my voice type and what I was and wasn't capable of, and always pushed me beyond what I thought was even possible for me. She made sure to warm me up appropriately every time. She was also very flexible when I would get sick or things would come up, and always made sure that we got all of our make up lessons in. I would continue to work with her if I hadn't moved to another state!

I am currently taking lessons with Ms. Carol Westcott and I could not be more thrilled. The setting of the studio is not only comfortable but welcoming, while at the same time her expertise and knowledge make it so easy for me to trust her judgment. She has a very technical way of teaching; when something goes askew in my voice, she tells me exactly what happened, and even has a 3-D laminated model of the larynx and vocal cords to show me what happens when I sing low, high and in between. On the other hand, she knows my voice so well that she can tell me exactly what to do based on my unique voice in order to produce a certain sound or tone. She has helped me develop my opera, chest mix, chest register, head register, low, middle, and high belt, as well as different styles of music, such as country, pop, alternative and musical theater. ONE LAST THING: I arrived at my first lesson not knowing a THING about sheet music...I had based my learning on sound for my whole life, so I couldn't read notes, keys or symbols. She taught me how to do just that. Thank you, Ms. Carol!

Maddie is without a doubt the best vocal teacher you will come across. After only a few months of lessons, I was singing like a new person. I feel confident that I have gotten top notch training and have the confidence I need to be successful in the musical theatre industry. Not the mention she is the sweetest, kindest person you'll meet. I am forever greatful for Maddie and the tools she has given me. My experience working with Matt Rippere was the most rewarding experience of my college career. Not only did he help me gain more confidence in my singing but he also gave me more confidence in being a person. He is a very caring person and always sees the best in everyone. When it came to singing, Matt always knew what was best for me and I honored every piece of advice he gave me. He is extremely knowledgeable in vocal pedagogy and vocal health. He is also very good and extremely thoughtful when choosing music for individual voices. I always loved every piece he picked for me. My favorite part of Matt’s teaching was that he never tried to make my voice something that it was not but worked on growing my natural voice. Throughout my 4 years of college my voice did nothing but grow healthily and I owe all of that to Matt. Without him I know I would not be the singer that I am today. He is by far the best voice teacher and I highly recommend using him as yours.
