Patrick did a great job with my kitchen backsplash and adjacent brick wall (pics attached) that I planned. His attention to details, passion and skill for what he does as well as friendly attitude make it fun to work with him. The project turned out to be exactly as I expected, if not better! I already recommended Patrick to another friend. I'm also going to hire him again in the next few weeks (after I'm done with my selections) for the wooden panel/tile work I have planned for a living room wall.

Remberto, came promptly to assess the proposed work, gave a fine estimate - which was competitive (and not the lowest of all estimates that we solicited). We hired him/his company to lay tile in our new sunroom, and paint the exterior of our large brick/wood siding house in Alexandria. He handled the job very professionally, he communicated well - explaining the details of work, recommended how to make the job even better. We provided the tile and the paint. The work itself was excellent, completed on time, along with another worker in his company. Both the painting job and the tiling job was well cleaned up when finished. And, we already have plans to hire him again for other house renovation project, as we were quite satisfied with the whole process of his work.

John is a very nice guy and his work is impeccable. At times I felt bad because I thought I was being too demanding about the specifications of the job but John met every demand of me and my wife. I hired John to put up a textured stone tile back splash for me. Originally I bought a tile off Amazon. John put up about half of the tile which took him a decent bit of time because he had to cut the tile and ensure that it looked good. After looking at it, I was not satisfied with the look. It was not because of his work but because of the quality of tile, which was poor. John explained to me that the tile was not good. He could have took advantage of me, finished the job, and went on with his day. Instead he gave me his honest opinion, took down the tile and cleaned off the wall free of charge (even though it was his time that was wasted because of my mistake in buying cheap tile), and he gave me a GREAT recommendation of who to purchase tile from. I went that same day to where he recommended and we quickly rescheduled the job. On the day of the rescheduled job, we had yet another set back. The new source of tile sent me some damaged pieces and I did not have enough tile to complete the job. Again John worked with me and came the next day after I got extra pieces to complete the job. John was extremely understanding and very helpful throughout the entire process. Any home improvement job from hereon out that I have I will absolutely call John first AND I will refer all of my family and friends to him. If you value honesty, professionalism, attention to detail, and expert craftsmanship John is without doubt the person to handle any job you need!

We absolutely loved working with José and his team to tile our basement floor with ceramic wood-looking tile, expose a brick wall, and install new toilet and a wall-mounted sink. He works FAST and within budget. Extra things we needed done were added at very reasonable extra expense ($40-60 to repair an unexpected drywall hole behind a mirror). His team does beautiful work, and José made sure every bit of trash or demo material was taken away. They also went above and beyond to make things look nice. For example, I don't think they charged me extra when they plastered around our baseboards and it looks soooo much better! They also patched a little hole left by a past electrician's job. They took extra good care of our space as if it was their own home. We also like that he respected our desire to further finish our space ourselves ( we are ok with doing our own painting). I can't say enough good things. We will definitely hire José and Brandon Contracting for our next job.

I had Baiza Construction replace the floor and wall tile in each of our 3 bathrooms a year ago. I waited this long to submit a review just to be sure everything held up nicely. They also did all the plumbing to replace the shower fixtures. Honestly, all I have is good things to say about their crew. First, the price was very fair. Second, he said it would take 5 or 6 full days to finish, and it took them 5 days and just a few hours on the 6th day. The tile work came out perfect. Every day, the guys checked with me to verify any ideas I had, including what pattern I wanted, or exactly how high I wanted the fixtures. They were sure to keep a clean area throughout, and never left a mess overnight. Anyway, I'm very happy with the work that was done, and I would definitely hire them again, and have recommended them to others.

Juan was great to work with...he fixed our leaking shower and repaired and painted out ceiling wall. He was on time and completed the work efficiently at a very fair price. We also had him and his team come to add stacked stone to cover old Brick around our fireplace. They were very careful to match and lay the stone perfectly. We are thrilled with the results! Juan and his team were professional and respectful of our home (laying drop clothes and cleaning up when finished working), We highly recommend Juan and his team. We will definitely be calling them for jobs in the future.

After recently discovering that the mortar in the brick on the outside wall of my home was completely deteriorating, causing water from rainfall to come into the walls of my home, I immediately posted on Thumbtack to request masonry work. I was frantic because a huge storm was expected that night, but Naun came within hours to give me a reasonable quote. He confirmed he could work the same day, got the supplies quickly, and worked literally from 1:00PM until 9:00PM non-stop, understanding the rain would start falling between 10-11:00PM. The next day, he came back to check on the work and confirmed where there might be other needs in re-applying the mortar. I'm so thankful for Naun and his ability to work quickly under deadlines, while providing a reasonable quote. Very happy to have found him!

I just hired them to power wash the back side of my townhouse and the brick in the backyard. They did a fantastic job at a very reasonable price. They were also on time for both the estimate and the job. There was no waiting around wondering when they would arrive. Will definitely use them again.

I contacted Booth Brothers to get my marble stairs repointed and to do some brick repointing on the exterior of my house. Josh and Chris came out and gave an estimate the same day that I contacted them! They were very punctual and professional. Josh was very easy to communicate with through phone and by text. Chris started the work a few days after they gave us a quote. I'm very happy with the work and the price was reasonable. I would definitely hire them again.

After a heavy storm, we had water leaking from our lights in the kitchen and from our electric panel in our basement! I called MJ Home Services and Dale came out the next day to investigate the leaks. He quickly turned around an estimate to fix both issues as I told him I wanted to fix the issues ASAP. Prices were very reasonable and he insisted on finding the cause of the leaks instead of assuming the obvious (the bay window in the kitchen). The "obvious" cause of the leak wasn't actually the problem after his investigation as Dale found that the problem was actually the window on the next level up. It was allowing water in and running down the brick into the kitchen drywall ceiling. I couldn't be happier that we chose MJ home services to complete the repairs and everything was fixed way beyond my expectations. Also, the coordination of service by Melissa was amazing.

Richard and his team did a magnificent job on the front porch and lawn of our DC townhouse. We've got an old rowhome, and wanted to add some character to it. Richard ground down the old painted cement patio and covered it in beautiful flagstone. Then, he removed the cement walkway to the sidewalk, re-poured the concrete, and built a brick walkway. He also built us a flower box out of brick along the walkway. Richard was reasonable, flexible, and timely. Working with Richard was like working with a friend. Couldn't recommend him more.

The 5th Genration Group recently did a minor renovation on our condo; the quality of the drywall and finishing work was excellent. The staff was neat and professional. The group also did an outstanding ceramic tile installation on an existing fireplace. We will definitely work with them in the future.

We hired Bathgate Construction to hardscape our 600 sq. ft. backyard for rat abatement and aesthetics. Brad communicated in a timely manner and the price was fair for the job quoted. We saw him several times during the project, as he came to check in on his team. He recommended a slight modification to add a step into our garage area, which turned out nicely. We live in the city, with very tight space, so the job took a bit more manual labor since they couldn't bring in any real heavy equipment to get the job done faster. One minor irritation is that we were quoted 5 - 6 business days to have the job completed, but in actuality, it took about 12 business days (and a Saturday) for completion. Regardless, his team did a beautiful job on the brick laying, creating a herringbone pattern with soldier border. Overall, I would definitely hire them again and recommend them for their work.

Cristian and Luis were responsive, reliable and hard-working. I had to have a bathroom remodel finished very quickly and they were able to start immediately and completed quickly. Also, the estimate was very reasonable. I had asked for some extra work and they were accommodating and when the total bill came, they were spot on with the actual cost compared to the estimate and the extra work added to the bill was very fair. It’s difficult to find a good dependable handyman that you feel comfortable working with, and I found this in C&L. I already have other projects with which, I will be asking for their services. The work they did for me was drywall and tiling of floor and walls of a full bathroom and extensive drywall repairs in other areas of the home.

I used Thumbtack to find someone to install crown molding in my condo. I live in an old building with uneven walls and floors, so I knew it wouldn't be an easy job. Mr Armaza contacted me immediately, came over within a few days and with 24 hours had sent me a proposal which I accepted. The job was scheduled to take 3 days, but he and his colleague, Rudy, competed the project in two days. As I said, I live in a downtown DC condo, and I had arranged for parking and access to an electrical outlet out side. Unfortunately, our building engineer is a grumpy, unfriendly person and after I had left he wouldn't allow Mr Armaza to use the electrical outlet. I was furious with the engineer, but Mr Armaza took it much better than I did. I wish they would have called me at work so I could have called the General Manager about the outlet (she was surprised when I told her what had happened). Mr Armaza and Rudy are very professional, have great attention to detail and take pride in their work. I am hoping that the bad experience with my building management won't prevent them from returning for other projects I will have at a later date. In sum, there was great communication, they completed the job early, stayed within budget, were clean, courteous and professional throughout and didn't mind my two cats offering furry assistance. I would rehire them in a heartbeat. I am thrilled to have the beautiful crown molding and baseboards I have wanted for many years. Thank you very much!!

Forma Floors did a fabulous job replacing the entire floor in our 1800 SF condominium. It was not an easy job. The apartment is crowded and there is not a good staging area for materials and equipment. We choose the Engineered Hardwood - Ipanema and it is a beautiful, high-quality floor. Forma handled the job very professionally from delivery through installation and beyond. After the floor was installed, I found a couple of minor issues (one entirely of my making). When I called Bruno to get his advice, he immediately offered to send someone out the next day to correct everything at no charge. He truly went above and beyond throughout the project. Communication was clear, he was very responsive, and the schedule was met. I couldn't be happier with the floor and the service.

Alex and company did a PHENOMENAL job installing my backsplash & kitchen floor tiles! They not only did beautiful work, they were quick (completed the job in 2 days inclusive with tile/backlash demolition), affordable & reliable. They also never missed an appointment or a follow up call; which can be hard to find in contractors today. I’m truly happy with my updated kitchen and am recommending them to family & friends. Awesome job! A+

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
