We were exceeding pleased with the work that EBRR Property Maintenance Services performed for us - a new driveway, walkway and garden wall. We also worked with Ed Bilo, he and the entire work staff were extremely professional, attentive to our ideas and a source of excellent advice. We will certainly use them for a variety of other lawn issues that we have in mind.

John has worked miracles for me on my rental property. I needed some repairs done in a relatively short time and John has meet and exceeded all deadlines and standards. He replaced my dishwasher, closet doors, added a storm door, painted the interior of the home, replaced and painted the fence and front rails outside, and painted the foundation in under two weeks! He loves what he does, takes pride in his craft and it radiates in his work.

I had a tree that was mostly dead and falling apart that had electric and cable wires running through it. He climbed up, and working old school...dropped all of the branches without clipping the wires or doing any damage to the gutters or fences in my yard or my neighbor's yard. Did it all in a day, and hauled it all away. What more can you ask for ?

Wilson and his crew tore down my old rotten backyard fence and completely rebuilt it. The whole project was completed within five days of the estimate. They did a fantastic job, which cost half of a previous estimate from another contractor. I am completely satisfied!

Makimanta removed a concrete patio and sidewalks and replaced a crumbling retaining wall and wooden fence in my backyard. More than any other company that gave me a quote, Makimanta really listened to what I was looking for and didn't try to suggest a quick slapdash replacement of just my fence. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail really shine through in the finished fence, and they worked hard to deliver the project on time. They did a really nice job and the entire experience working with them was awesome.

I hired Ventura Tree servies after receiving 5 bids to take down three large trees in my back yard. The trees were very large and close to my new porch and one actually hung over the fence and over my neighbors private swimming pool area. Ventura Tree Services showed up early (on time) and began work immediatly. They were very courtious and considerate of any noise ordinace and neighbors. Once they began , I was amazed at thier skill and precision at dropping very large sections of branches and tree trunks. With a set of ropes they skillfully set on other trees, they were able to keep the branches from damaging any property or the grass yard as each piece was lowered to the grownd or swung to a place where the section could drop safely. I might add that the work was done on 2/5/14 and it was bitterly cold and very windy that day. These guys worked all day and worked very hard too. I would definately hire them again and also will give them 5 stars for thier service and price. They were: Polite, respectful, caring, professional, efficient, neat, and a true pleasure to work with ! I was and am truely amazed at the work they did!

We hired Victor to build a wooden privacy fence in our backyard, to replace the old chain link fence that was already installed when we bought our house. He and his team did a fantastic job for an excellent price! The fence looks great, built solidly with clean lines, which is difficult to maintain up the steep hill we have on one side of our yard and they did such a great job. We would definitely hire Victor again for future work for our house, and will be recommending him to others.

I had met with two other fence contractors as well as Ernesto of Femar Fencing. All the prices were fairly close and competitive. Ernesto took the time to explain exactly what he was going to do and how and why he was doing it. 275 feet of fence removed and replaced in less than 2 days. He did note that there was some issue with some of the pickets and, instead of just using them and saying no more, he advised that he was returning them to the supplier and securing more. That's the sign of a quality individual who takes real pride in his work. I've already recommended his services to a friend who is also looking into getting some fencing replaced. Bottom line, I made the correct choice to go with Femar Fencing and will enjoy my fence for years and years to come.

Reynaldo was quick to respond to my initial request, provided a competitive estimate, and quickly answered all of my questions leading up to the project. The removal of the old fence and installation of the new fence was completed quickly. After the initial installation there were a few items I noted that needed adjustment (reversing a gate and few sections of panel framing to face away from the neighbors, some nails that weren't fully set in the wood and a few crooked fence pickets. Reynaldo returned promptly and fixed every item on my list, double checking to confirm my satisfaction. He mentioned "this is your 8-year fence and I want to ensure you are happy with it". He also provides a three year warranty on the fence installation and materials, aside from natural aging of the wood, which is great customer service.

Carlos showed up on time and completed the work in three segments but did what he said he was going to do and it looked great when he was finished. He re-mulched my yard, power washed and stained my fence- and it looked great when it was done. He also conducted some small repairs to my fence which are perfect. I would definitely hire him again.

I had contacted Brad for a patio slab that I needed to have a ragged edge removed from. The price he quoted was exactly what I felt was fair for the job. He was on time for my appointment and the job looks better than I ever imagined. He took the time to cut off some fence post that were not in the scope of the job, but made a big difference. The jobsite was clean when completed and I could not be happier. I felt the job was handled very professionally and I would not hesitate to recommend Earthworks for any outdoor project....Karen Harris

So I don't think you should praise someone for doing what they say they are going to do. He and his helper showed up when they said they would, did the work faster than they said they would. Work looks great (repaired my fence). And it was a good value. More than fair. But I will give them all the stars but it is sad that today we have to expect something other than professionalism. I will use them again.

Jose did an excellent job on installing our fence. It was freezing outside that day so my husband and I were thinking he would reschedule, but he came on time bright and early like he said he would. Finished the same day. We would definitely hire Quality First Construction again!

NFL were the only contractors who showed up on time to give us a quote for our new fence gate. The work was well-done, to our specifications, and reasonably priced. We are very happy with NFL!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
